Question: i gave my computer which contains illegal materials to my computer technician to get it fixed? is it possible for me to get in trouble? i dont mean illegal like downloaded songs and movies which almost everybody has. stuff that are really illegal the problem i have is that my computer wont start up and the fan keeps on going, im not sure whether that is a hardware or software problem if im under 18, would the punishment for me be subdued?

Answer: I'm not surprised you don't allow e-mail and your Q&A's are private. It's unlikely the tech will look at all the files on your computer. If something is found such as child pornography, terrorist threat or anything which contravenes the the laws of your country the consequences could be drastic, a heavy fine or imprisonment. The tech would be obliged to report you to the authorities or face charges him or herself if you later get caught and it is found not to have been reported earlier. You've already red flagged yourself by admitting you might have something of interest to the authorities and no doubt the arbitrators of Yahoo answers would only be too happy to help them. Do the crime - do the time. You'll only have yourself to blame if you get caught. Edit. Your age might be taken into account but the penalty will still hinge on the content of the files and what laws have been broken. Reputable computer techs don't have the time to search through everyone's files - they have other work to do. The most likely way they would find it is in the course of tracing the problem. If the files are not found, when you get the computer back, play it safe and destroy the files if it worries you that much. Destroy with a file destroyer program. A simple delete is not sufficient - the files are still there until overwritten by the program.

Question: anyone a construction materials technician? In the Phoenix area Ive noticed quite a few of these job openings and just wondering exactly what they do on a daily basis. Also would this be a good field to get into for the long run or is it just popular right now becaues we're experiencing so much construction right now?

Answer: Speculating, but they do materials sampling and testing for large construction projects. This is not the kind of job that they can ship overseas, as they'd have to ship the samples overseas, then wait for testing and results, usually these are local people and local businesses (examples: AET, Braun Intertek in Minneapolis). If that is the case it is a potential long term job with long term demand, unless some competing lab pops up in nearby Mexico and is drastically less expensive. They would be working on buildings as well as freeways and other large municipal projects.

Question: Is the transition from being a structural engineer to a materials engineer easy? I am currently a structural engineer, but I am about to be laid off and I decided that it was time for a change. I graduated with a B.S. in Civil Engineering two years ago and always enjoyed the testing and materials aspect of geotechnical engineering and I was wondering if it was easy to transition from structural engineering to materials engineering. Would I have to go back to school to study materials engineering? Would I need to first become a lab technician at a geotech firm to get experience in the field? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Answer: I think Dan P should have done a bit more research before answering. With a B.S. in Civil you would pretty much have to do a whole new degree to specialise as a materials engineer. The major commonality is the mechanical engineering areas, but specialist areas such as processing, structure/property relationships, etc. To be a lab tech with a BS makes you a good lab tech - and might limit your career. If you are really only interested in the materials and testing of geotechnical engineering, it would be easier to do specialised short training courses in those areas and focus your career experience taking you into the areas you are interested in.
