You want to see some combat, but nothing to dangerous..Ha ha ha
Pay is the same for everyone, you should know this if you want to enlist. And all jobs suck equally and all jobs are the best equally.
Pick something you want to do, and stop looking for the glory without ever earning it.

Question: Female Heavy Equipment Mechanic? I am a heavy equipment mechanic and I just so happen to be a woman! I was a small diesel engine mechanic in the Air Force and when I got out, I was hired by a copper mine in their truck shop to work on 190 ton dump trucks and other heavy equipment. I did this for 2.5 years and had a blast. I've since moved away and am working in an office and hate it. I want to be back out in the shop. I'm putting all kinds of irons in the fire in Oregon, Idaho, and Arizona and maybe California (where I am now). Anyone know of any companies that aren't afraid to hire a female mechanic WITH experience?!
Answer: Try any company... if they don't have a legitimate reason to turn you down for a job, just the fact that you're female, then sue them for discrimination.

Answer: Look in the phone directory under colleges/schools/technical institutes. Call them and see what the criteria is for getting it done. I know some schools will give you one "IF" you can past the test. You will have to pay a fee for doing this, but I do know you can get it done. You can get credit for what you already know, if you pass the test to do so. You might even try some on line schools and get your diploma even faster. This has a lot to do with where you are located too. Are you in the UK now? Are you in the USA? If you are in the USA then what I just told you should help. Try the University of Phoenix on line school, as I know they do stuff like that, but I'm not sure how quick you can do it.
I hope this helps you. Good Luck!!!

Would a degree make a difference?

Question: Are mechanic's tools tax deductible? My husband started working for the City of CC and of course being a heavy equipment mechanic one must have their own tools. He has purchased several items adding up to almost $2,000. We have saved our receipts. Can these be considered tax deductible since they are used for his job?
Additional Info: He is the only employed person in the household, and we usually file Married filing Jointly-. We are homeowners but do not have mortgage payments.
Thanks!
Answer: Yes they are deductible, but it probably won't help you. Tools are an employee business expense that are reported on form 2106 which then carries to Schedule A itemized deductions. Employee business expenses must exceed 2% of you adjusted gross income before they start to count. Add all your itemized deductions up and if it exceeds your standard deduction it will lower your tax.
Since you state you don't have a mortgage and that is most peoples largest itimezed deduction it is unlikely your itimized deductions will be larger than your standard deduction.
Question: Why are good mechanics so hard to find? I have been trying to hire a heavy equipment mechanic in Denver, Colorado. This job starts at $15-$18 for someone with minimal experience and I think I have posted it everywhere except the local newspapers because I have not had much luck with the papers in the first place. Is there somewhere I am not posting that I should be?
Answer: Try advertising overseas. This is good money for some one with little experience.
We have a shortage over here in New Zealand as well.
Some of the mechanics over here are getting 45-60 dollars an hour plus work vehicles and housing.
Good staff are hard to find and even harder to keep if you aren't paying well.
Not that you are paying bad money. $16 say Converted to the kiwi dollar is about $23.50 per hour. Not a bad income.
All the best to you
Question: could I start a business in my garage? This is in Indianapolis, IN. I am a Heavy Equipment Mechanic, and on my free time I repair cars and trucks in my garage at home, I do the repairs very cheap, since I have no insurance, bonds ect. I was concidering making a business out of it. Possibly getting a grant, to update my tools, get a lift and raise the roof on my garage. I know I will have to do a lot more than what I do now, and charge more to be able to pay insurance.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Answer: Good to hear that you are seeing success doing something you like. My only suggestion is that you check the zoning laws in your community. You may need to find commercial space to run your business.
You may also want to consider the traffic in the area you are doing business. For an auto repair business high volume would be best for advertising.
