Question: Job Path question. Game developer/computer programmer? i want to become either a computer programmer or a game developer my school offered this classes i took
* Programming in C++
* Programming in Java
* Netology (web design)
* Wired and Wireless Networking
and now am taking AP computer science i am at my junior year and i am wondering what from now i took all classes available and now what should i do?
Answer: To be a computer programmer, keep on taking those computer science courses. To pursue a degree in game development, take some courses in psychology, philosophy, etc.
You should consider RPI for college. They are a great technical school and is the 1st university to offer game design as a major.
Question: Is there a controller similar to the 360's controller, compatible with the PS3? I prefer offset analog sticks, concave dips, and triggers on the 360. But I have a PS3 console. I know that the Shadow Wireless controller is similar to the 360 controller. But are there anymore? Is there any third-party developer currently developing a 360 like controller for the PS3?
Answer: No, but there actually is a device that lets you connect a 360 controller to a PS3. Keep in mind 360 controllers don't have motion sensing, but this should work

Question: What's the best Linux distribution for a laptop? As a developer, I'd like set up a laptop with one of the linux distributions. This won't be a dual boot. This laptop will be strictly linux and wireless most of the time.
For a developer who wants to do some linux developing, which one of the many linux distributions is considered the best for a laptop? Do they all contain gcc, gdb, etc... Do any of them come with IDE's for development?
Thanks...
Answer: everyone has an opinion on this... it seems that unbuntu or kunbuntu are the most user friendly and they both have free support:

Question: NO WIRELESS connect - Xbox360 to AT&T/ SBCGlobal 2WIRE router/modem? Gonna throw this thing out the window soon!
I was a custom software developer, so pretty versed in all this stuff BUT ripping my hair out on this one!
JUST replaced our old wireless router/ modem w/ AT&T SBCGlobal 2Wire combo. No problems w/ computers or Tivo hooking up to the WEP SSID, but the XBOX w/ Pelican (Xbox) adapter has it's own ideas.
Xbox worked fine on old wireless router w/ no probs - but now I can't even get the option to connect wirelessly to anything on Xbox (added the MAC add's for Xbox & adapter to the 2wire) & still no way to connect (or even see the SSID). Tried manually inputing the IP, DNS, gateway, etc. addresses - still doesn't work.
I read that people are using a ethernet cable w/ Xbox direct to 2Wire, but NOT an option. This is my YOUNG nephew's Xbox & MY router - and I handle all the computers in the house (share house w/ sis) & don't need anyone messin' around w/ things they don't know ;-)
Anyhow - anyone have this same prob? Again, I never had any problem w/ my old D-Link, but this 2Wire & Xbox is making me nuts! I also tried creating a dedicated IP - doesn't work, tried public proxied subnet - doesn't work - no wireless broadcast/ ssid available on Xbox only (no option to even look - it's inaccessable) & again have the MAC addresses for both the Xbox & Pelican Xbox adapter entered as exceptions for the router's firewall.
Am I going to have to 'host' the Xbox on my computer as an application? Not something I want to do either. This is just stupid! It should be as easy as 123, like everything else incl the Tivo, that was hooked up in 2 secs . . . ready to throw this Xbox through the window! HELP???!!!
(Sorry for repeating myself - just really really wound right now since I've been wasting my day with this 1 issue for hours upon hours)
Answer: It sounds like a signal strength issue. Not all wireless products have the same range, and since you say that the xbox is not seeing the wireless SSID at all thats what it looks like to me. Try moving the xbox closer and see if that works.
Question: What is the best university for Postgraduate (MSc) study in Wireless Communications ? (in UK)? Hi,
for now im thinking of:
- University of Southampton
- Imperial College London
- Kings College London
- Brunel University
I was unable to find a specific rankings table for Postgraduate Study (like Times Good University guide for UG study). If there is one, please tell me.
I have recently finished my UG studies (BSc Network and Communications Engineering). Im interested in Satellite/Wireless/Personal & Mobile Communications and DSP.
Im working at the moment as a Junior C Developer, developing applications for iTV, set-top boxes, but hope to do my masters in the next year or so.
any kind of advice is appreciated.
thanks !
thanks for the advice ! Im just looking to expand my existing knowledge. I don't want to be paying big bucks for something I already know. Im looking for a course which is pretty comprehensive. Although my budget for this would be under £15,000 (I'm an international student). So I guess imperial is out of the picture..
Answer: Hi,
I know a few people who have studied at Imperial (PG) and have enjoyed it. I only know undergrad S'ton and Brunel, but they liked it there. London is more expensive to live in, unless you have means to earn a decent wage.
I dont know of any tables ranking like UG courses, but most universities have a student destination guide from graduates detailing what percentage have found jobs, what percentage enjoyed the course etc.
Try looking at their Student satisfaction survey results.
Also it might help you to look at the requirements for their undergrad entry, as this will give you an idea of their existing calibre.
Also the prospectus will have entry requirements so you can see who is more stricter with exam results and who will give you more of a chance to prove yourself in interview.
London ones are more well known I would say, but that doesnt mean they are better- just that they will have more international applicants (who pay more money for their places..and invariably get accepted more often than home students).
Maybe try asking your company who they would favour in interview- just because it has a good uni name doesnt mean the teaching is great.
In the meantime, if it is something you want to do, then keep studying at every point. Keep learning the basics like morse code, resitsor colour codes as when you understand where things come from, you can understand how to break the rules. Also this knowledge will shine out of you at every opportunity, and you will really know your stuff at interview. I know the basics might seem a bit odd when you are looking at modern comms and network but believe me, the number of people who know the basics, well enough to apply them, is rapidly decreasing and this knowledge will make you invaluable.
Remember it is competative, but if it is something you want then dont give up. Use every opportunity to research, digest and store info.
Good luck.
P.s. extra side note... there are some companies and branches of G'vmt who will allow you day releasr to study for Pg. some of them will help with fees on the understanding you work for them for a set period. It is worth investigating too..
EDIT: I wasn't saying that the courses will cover the basics- just that they are invaluable, and that in my experience a lot of students try to go from undergrad to postgrad simply as 'the next step' without appreciating how much there is to know, or that you have to be really interested in it as you'll spend every waking moment reading, researching and talking about it!!!! It sounds like you know your mind and plans though. It might be worth talking to your old UG personal tutor(s) or careers advise dept as they are bound to be able to share some incite and past student experiences. (Most Unis offer careers/study advise as it is in their interest to help you achieve).
The other thing to do would be to request the course specifications from the PG handbook from the institutions. This will give you more indication of the requirements so you can compare it with your UG.
Also some countries do have grants to help students study in other countries.
I'm sorry that I cant help with the Universities, or specific courses that you have chosen, but i do hope that my experience of study in the UK UG and PG will help to point you to some help. I guess PG students on MSc dont spend must time on YA!!
You must like th UK to do both UG and PG here!
Question: PS3--- Will Guitar Hero World Tour Have the same wireless receiver problems as Guitar Hero 3? since sony isnt letting 3rd party developers use the bluetooth feature, guitar hero 3 had to have a usb receiver for the wireless controller. as many people have had problems with this, i researched it, and i saw somewhere that the signal is easily interfeared with by wifi, cellphone, large metal objects, and so on. I want to know if this is going to be fixed with the new guitar hero.....................and ive asked this question before but everyone thought i was talking about my TVS LAG, no this is about the WIRELESS RECEIVER
Answer: Sadly, it hasn't been answered yet. Most are assuming another dongle receiver, as RedOctane and Harmonix have both dodged the "Can we haz Blootoof?!" question yet. I've searched dozens of sites, and the only thing my search has ended in is a bunch of unanswered questions. (And trust me, my Google-fu is strong)
If you're having trouble with the receiver's lag, attempt to move your console. Move it away from things such as cell phones, Wifi routers, Wireless phones, microwaves ect.... mostly anything you can think of that uses a 2.4GhZ signal. I had problems with mine until I moved it from one side of the table to the other.
But here's to crossing our fingers and hoping for seamless bluetooth integration!
Question: Is wireless usb the same as usb2.0? http://www.usb.org/developers/wusb/
Answer: Wireless USB and USB 2.0 is not the same thing. They are separate technologies.
USB 2.0 standards were released in April 2000. USB 2.0 offered improvements over original USB 1.0 devices. The most notable advances were that USB 2.0 provided high-speed data transfers of 480 Mbit per second compared to USB 1.0's 1.5 to 12 Mbit/s (Low- and Full-Speed respectively). USB 2.0 is called "High-Speed USB". But there are specs referring to wireless standards. For your information, USB 3.0 will be called "Super-speed USB" with data transfers up to 5 Gbits per second being possible. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_2.0#USB_2.0
Wireless USB began being developed around February 2004 -- 4 years after USB 2.0 was developed. Since it is a new technology you might very well call it WUSB 1.0 as it is called by companies such as Innovative Logic (http://www.emediawire.com/releases/2008/8/emw1167614.htm) The idea of Wireless USB is to provide compatibility with older USB standards and devices while doing away with wires and cables. The 480 Mbit/sec data transfer rate is supported up to 10 feet. Wireless USB devices started to appear around mid-2007. See http://www.usb.org/developers/wusb/About_WUSB_FINAL5.pdf
Question: How come site developers haven't use tab indexes when I need them? For-example, when I'm on Yahoo Answers and the wireless mouse runs out of batteries (again)...
Answer: It's an often overlooked feature. Most likely because the website in question probably wasn't designed with accessibility high on the priorties list. And yes that's a shame.

Question: Ok now with the Palm Pre for Sprint, what is the best phone G1 (T-Mobile), Storm (Verizon) or iPhone (AT&T)? CES 2009 brought us a new player in the smartphone upper-echelon. Let's drill down and see how the Palm Pre compares with the iPhone and Android's G1.
1. Multitouch touchscreen/gesture control: All three are capacitive, only the Pre and iPhone have multitouch. The Pre's glowy little "gesture area" has dropped the touchable real estate all the way down tto the bottom of the phone, which is great for being able to navigate with one hand and not interfere with the screen at all. The wavey dock you bring up from the bottom looks awesome, but can you use it out of the box without a second thought or page through the manual? That's my question. Advantage: iPhone/Pre tossup.
2. Multitasking: One of the beefiest of our beefs with the iPhone SDK is its insistence on Apps running one at a time. The G1's notifications drawer was definitely a step in the right direction, but the Pre's interface is the first smartphone OS that was built with multitasking as a core design element. Resembling the Xbox's old Blades, or a less-jarring OS X Expose even, the Pre's "Cards" interface always places you in the context of every app running for fast switching, and notifications from other apps don't pull you away completely from the task at hand. Multitasking is hugely important on a phone, and it's a good sign that Palm recognizes. Advantage: Pre
3. Hardware: Adrian says:
While the hardware is definitely high quality, I'm not entirely blown away by the design. It looks really nice, and original, but it's a little too cutesy in shape and kind of reminds me of an oversized pebble. A slightly larger screen could have definitely been put to good use, and I really don't like the black space on the sides of the screen.
A phone with a built-in QWERTY still hasn't touched the iPhone in terms of sleekness and pure sex. And it might still be a while. Advantage: iPhone
4. Development platform: The Pre's "Web OS" sure sounds nice—all developers need to know is JavaScript, HTML and CSS? Sounds good in theory, but building a mobile app will never be as easy as cranking out a new theme for your Tumblr. Palm's stressing ease of development, though, so it will be interesting to see how it stacks up against Apple's solid, familiar-to-devs OS X-based SDK and Android's fully open source approach. Advantage: Pre? If it's straight-up JavaScript, that's a lot of programmers ready to go. Note: we had iPhone here before, but we've switched with a qualification. Developer community still goes to iPhone for volume.
5. Web Integration: The Pre subtly integrates the internet into the phone at every opportunity, and it's awesome. Contacts get pulled in from Facebook, Gmail, IM and and scanned for dupes; the messaging app shows your last several emails, IMs and SMS with that contact in a single window. Really, really smart stuff. Advantage: Pre
6. App Store/developer community: A smartphone is only as good as the software it runs. On the Pre, Palm is still keeping application delivery details like pricing behind the curtain, but they did say the app delivery will be entirely handled by the phone (without a desktop app), which is a shame. They're saying that they're not going to duplicate Apple's Hobbesian app approval black box mistake, which Android has also hasn't fallen for, but there will be an approval process based on "security and stability." But as we know with Android, a dev community needs enough devices in the hands of consumers to reach critical mass, which the Pre will have to match. Advantage: iPhone, even with the black box, but Android and Pre's more open stances are reassuring.
7. Wireless charger: We've seen wireless charger tech for years at CES, but it's taken this long for a major consumer gadget to come bundled with its own wireless charger in the box. Whoops, it's not in the box, sold separately for unknown $$. But still: Bravo. Advantage: Pre
8. The Network: Dan Hesse, Sprint's CEO, gave our coast-to-coast 3G test a shout out in his press conference. Of course he did: Sprint won (in download speeds). Sprint was the only major carrier without a powerful, hype-catching smartphone choice, and now they have one. The Pre is a data-centric phone with a network we've proven to be strong in a large swatch of the country—that's a good combo. But would you switch to Sprint for the Pre? Ugh. Advantage: Not cut and dry for everyone, but we stand by our numbers: Sprint is the best 3G network in our tests.
9. Physical keyboard: It's preference, but one held by a large swathe of the gadget buying public: physical QWERTY keypads are still the mainstream input of choice. Touch is getting better all the time, but a lot of people still want physical keyboards. But better yet is the ability to choose; unfortunately, the Pre doesn't have a soft onscreen keyboard, and its slide-out is the same meh QWERTY from the Treo Pro. Advantage: It's preference, but on me, the iPhone's soft keyboard can't be beat.
10. Camera: The P
re has an LED Flash for its 3MP camera, something both the iPhone and G1 lack. Flash cellphone photos are ugly, but for a lot of people, they're good enough. So credit for throwing it in. Advantage: Pre
11. Battery: Apple's still an outlier with their non-removable battery; like the G1's, the Pre's comes out for a spare swap too. We've heard Apple's reasons for this a million times, we know the drill, but removable batteries will never stop being handy. Advantage: Pre
12. Copy & Paste: Yep, Pre's got it. iPhone still doesn't. Advantage: Pre/G1
13. Browser: All three use a browser based on WebKit, which has become the standard for the mobile web. We couldn't put it through our Mobile Browser Battlemodo ringer obviously, but what we saw looked great, and it's the only other mobile browser besides the iPhone that supports multitouch zooming. Advantage: iPhone/Pre
So there you have it. We're excited. Are you?

Answer: Palm Pre has the new Palm OS, from the videos and review I have seen, it's better than all the phones listed, but google is coming out with G2. it's a never ending war.
Question: Why isn't the iPhone available on the AT&T website?? When will this new iPhone 3G be released?
Will they still have iPhone 2G available for purchase? If so, When?
This is what it says:
AT&T and Apple introduced the revolutionary iPhone in June 2007 and it quickly became one of the most popular devices in the AT&T wireless portfolio.
On July 11, the companies will launch the next generation iPhone, a 3G-enabled device that will be exclusively available through AT&T in the United States.
The new iPhone 3G will have several significant enhancements, including:
~3G broadband wireless connectivity, which gives customers a home broadband-like speed experience when surfing the Internet, sharing files, and using media-rich Web applications
~Business-class capabilities, including e-mail, viewed on a large, touch-screen device and designed to meet the needs of companies of all sizes
~The ability for developers, including AT&T, to create customized consumer and business applications using the Apple software developer's kit (SDK).
The iPhone 3G harnesses the power of AT&T's super-fast 3G, or third generation, mobile broadband network currently available in more than 280 major U.S. metropolitan areas. By year end, AT&T plans to offer 3G service in 350 metro areas.
As a provider to all of the Fortune 1000, AT&T plans to actively market the iPhone 3G to businesses of all sizes.
How much will it be??
Answer: Vanessa, Don't worry here is the information.
$199-8gb
$299-16gb
Forget the iphone 2g after this who want to pay more for less
They are going to get you at Att though I hear they want to charge more for services in order to get it which is probably why it costs less, they will make up somewhere else in the att/apple deal. Slimmer its nice and the interface is going to be different. Battery life is up and thats good.
I am sure their will be a huge line for this at this price excellent and hopefully they have enough in production this time around. All we need to see is someone selling online for 1 million dollars and getting it.
Question: Blackberry Vs. Palm. Which one should I buy? I am going to dare ask probably one of the most debated questions out there in the Smart phone world. I am not trying to start a huge debate I just want to know whats best for my needs. So please tell me which is better, a blackberry or a palm?
Since I am a student I need something that I can use to manage my busy life, i.e. scheduling, internet (messenger, browser, e-mail), text msg support, video browsing (not so much as recording), decent size hard drive. These are just some of the basic things I am looking for in a smart phone, although I do have quite a few advanced needs (business and computer related) since I study computers (web developer & program analyst). Mainly I want something that's durable and reliable as well because as we all know everyone can be clumsy.
I am not afraid to spend a lot of cash on the phone its self since I want a really good phone, so please feel free to suggest some models as well since I am no pro at this :(
However I don't want to spend any extra money other than my current Rogers wireless plan (since I am a student), so it has to be compatible to my rogers wireless plan (viva la WiFi!).
Answer: If you’re into immediate communication (and your boss picks up the tab for your cell phone), go with the Blackberry. If you’re into playing Sudoku or the game,Drug Wars, during sales meetings, or you’re tired of all that pesky hand-cramping from all the ATM receipts you have to enter by hand, the Centro’s for you.
1. Palm’s hardware is better-designed. For example, you can change your memory stick without taking out the battery, which you can’t do on a BB.
2. The BB’s charging and PC syncing connection is by mini-USB, which is convenient and effective. Palm’s proprietary connector won’t work with any other peripherals and is a bit awkward to manipulate.
3. BB has a cool feature where it knows (by way of a small magnet implanted in all of its carrying cases) whether it’s in or out of the case, and it lets you set each ringtone/vibrate scheme independently (i.e. I have my BB set to only vibrate when it’s in the holster, since I know I’m going to feel it, and to ring when it’s out of the holster, so I can hear it when it’s in the other room charging).
4. BB gives you the option of adding and editing your email accounts through their online portal, which is quite a bit more convenient than having to use the Centro’s tiny keyboard.
One thing that is for sure: we can all rejoice that the days of ridiculously priced PDA’s are gone. If you haven’t taken the plunge into PDA/smartphone world

Question: Would you be insulted if...? So my brother was giving me the wireless access code for his internet the other day and the password was made up of numbers, letters and an exclamation mark.
So he points at the exclamation mark saying
"Do you know what this is?"
and
"Do you know how to do an exclamation mark on the computer? You have to press shift+1"
Now, He's a network engineer and knows a lot about networks and stuff. But Myself, I'm a Software Engineer, web developer and programmer.
So should I be insulted by this condescending comment of just let it go?
p.s - it was no joke. He was serious, but he was trying to help also.
If he was joking I could live with it easier, it's the fact that he thinks he has to tell me that hurts my feelings.
Answer: He's your brother. My brother does stuff like that too. He's usually just kidding
