Question: What are the qualifications required for a PLC programmer?
Answer: Get COOL ! Qualifications has nothing to do with a learned/ earned expertise ; a decade back EEE Engineers had'nt had a paper on PLC's.
NOw-a-days you have Certificate courses in PLC's. If you know ladder diagrams and how to programs on a Vendor's PLC given a problem - that's it - YOU ARE QUALIFIED. In the Job markets just a Diploma might help. What is the use of a Qualification if you know NOT how to use/ program a PLC ?

Question: Is there such a job as a PLC Programmer? Hi, I work for one of three large-car manufacturing plants in Australia. I'm an electrical apprentice, but most of my day actually revolves around PLCs and troubleshooting automation faults (+ robots).
I'm really getting into PLCs (AB), and I study it at night school currently. I'm wondering if it's worth considering a career beyond being a regular sparky, and becoming a PLC whiz if I apply myself well enough.
Is there such a job as PLC programmer, and plenty of work available? I know manufacturing in Aus is going overseas, this is my concern.
Would it be best to study a bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering also, because at the moment I'm studying at Diploma level.
Thankyou!
Answer: From the North American perspective, PLC programming is a valuable skill. For some people, it is the only job they do. As you point out however, manufacturing seems to be shifting to low labor cost countries.
In my opinion, the answer is 'yes" to both. Pursuing a bachelors in EE or BET is the way to go. Having PLC capabilities makes you more employable and more capable.
Understand the disadvantage however. If you get into controls archetecture for a living, you are always the last person on the project and all of the pressure to make up for delays falls on you. Good luck in whichever you pursue.
Question: Is there a lot of industry and Automation (PLC) jobs in New Zealand ? I am specialized in Automation. I want to know if I will be able to work as a PLC programmer or an automation spacialist if I immigrate to new zealand.
Answer: Probably not.
NZ has some industry, but its mostly agricultural & tourism country.
You might be better off moving to Australia. They have a bigger economy.
Question: I am having trouble with my Com1 port. I am not able to use it? What do you think? When I go to my system properties and disable com1 and reboot. Then go in an enable com1 I can use the com port. But if I boot my computer and com1 is enabled then com1 is not useable. It appears something is "stealing" my com1 port. I need this port often, I am a PLC programmer. I have a Dell Latitude D810. How can I fix this? I am tired of the work around.
My com1 will work, if I boot with com1 disabled then enable it. But if I forget and shut down the notebook compute with com1 enabled, I have to re-boot with com1 disabled. Then enable it again when I want to use it. This is a pain. Com1 appears in list under the device manager.
Answer: Do you have an internal modem? See if you can configure that to use com2: or another com port.
Check your BIOS setup to see if Com1 port is actually enabled.
Question: What is athe defination of an expereinced C/C++ programmer? Can anyone tell me what is the exact meaning of an experineced programmer
I mean when a company wants a person with for example 2 years experinces, these 2 years
must be exactly commercial expereince OR university projects,
intership projects and small industry projects are also included?
About myself,
1) I have passed C and Pascal programming in university in two semesters with some projects.
2) I was in a team for implementation of a PLC by C programming for controlling some machines in a company (The costumer was one company),
3) Some small C-based projects that had specific companies.
4) My result in PhD which is for a biotechnology company (in C++).
By this way, I have worked in the area of C/C++ around 2 yeras but I do not know if I apply for a company I should write I have two years experience or not?
Answer: You probably do not want to at all claim you have two years of work experience unless you can show two years of pay for that work. On the other hand you can design your resume in such a way that you use keywords like designed this project, worked in a team on this project. Make sure you put action verbs anywhere you can. Given those details companies will look at you. Then you can send your resume in to them, telling the truth. They can look at it and say hmm this looks like it could be a good fit. Then they will likely test you before an interview. Pass that test and they will likely not care that you don't have the 2 years of "work" experience. All you can do is try, but it is very important that you are honest because companies have people that verify and if you send a resume to a company that verifies you will not have a good time with it. Good luck finding a position.
