Question: How do I become a butcher / meat cutter? My son is interested in becoming a butcher or meat cutter. I have tried to research some vocational programs in our area but I have not been successful. We live in north Texas (Lewisville). Any ideas?

Answer: You dont have to complete any vocational program. the best way is through apprenticeship or simply "moving up the ladder" my advice is to get a job at the local grocery store in the produce or deli dept so he can be around the profession and notice what it is like. Let the manager know he is interested in becomg a meat cutter and try to move into that position from another position in the store. The pay is great! good luck

Answer: Become a butcher's apprentice! Ask for a job at a butcher's shop.

Answer: It's a fishmonger. And somebody who cuts cheese (if you will) is a cheesemonger.

Question: Can you pick up a parasite from raw meat,working as a meat-cutter? This Lady and I are meat-cutters and she went blind in one eye, a didn't realize it. She went for an eye examine and she was blind in one eye. they did some tests and found that a parasite in the eye had destroyed the inside. they ask if she had dibeties,no- high blood pressure-no, do you have animals-no. What do you work at-meatcutter.they said that she may have picked it up from raw meat.

Answer: If you are handling raw meat, be sure to wear gloves and never, ever, touch your eyes, nose or mouth or any open wounds anywhere on your body after handling meat and before washing your hands. When you remove your gloves, wash your hands immediately. The parasites, bacteria, viruses, etc... can be present in pretty much any raw meat and they can be transferred to any surface that touches the raw meat, including your hands, which can then transfer the contagion to your eyes, etc...

Answer: there is the local 770 in los angeles ca the number is 1800-832-9770 if they are the local food/meat and drug union but if that is not the area you are looking for then maybe they can give you the correct number. hope it helps

Question: butcher - meat cutter question.? I have a choice between 2 cuts of meat, choice sirloin roast and select standing rib roast which I can buy in bulk. Which will be better for slicing and grilling on a bar-b-que?

Answer: Standing rib roast is basically prime rib or rib eye steaks (formerly known as delmonico steaks) Sirloin is a much leaner cut of beef, which means that it can be very dry if not cooked properly. I have always purchased a standing rib roast, cut it off the bone and sliced them 3/4 of an inch thick to grill for steaks. They come out wonderfully tender and moist.

Answer: There are grocery stores, meat markets, and slaughter houses all over the place. You must be at least 18 to work (even step into!) in a meat department because of the dangerous equipment.
