Question: Aquaculture? Comment on the statement: Working in aquaculture is more like farming than commercial fishing.
If this is true: would the people who used to work in fishing long before the idea of aquaculture have a hard time adapting to the new industry? If so... what would those difficulties be?
If this is false: Do you think this would discourage the growth of the aquaculture industry?
Answer: It is all about Rearing aquatic animals or cultivating aquatic plants for food...
Question: What are some benefits of aquaculture? I was wondering if you could give me some significant benefits/pros for aquaculture (fish-farming) for an essay I have to write.
Some strong arguments that can counter the environmental argument against it would be great.
All I can seem to find for the benefits is that it's a very important economic activity. Can you help me expand on this as well?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Answer: Aquaculture contributes to the food source. For one thing, the fish that is cultured need not be caught in the open seas. There are benefits derived from this as it gives livelihood to the people employed in these projects. And if the produce of this venture is exported, then it contributes to the GNP of the country. Unlike other industries, you don't have to worry about effluents coming out from the business. It does not give pollutants to the atmosphere as does ranches, poultry and piggery does. The inputs to this industry could be produced locally. It could bring down prices of fish in the particular area where it operates because of added supply.

Question: How do i breed a fish for aquaculture.?
Answer: There are whole courses offered on the college level that cover just that subject. Along with courses in fish health, nutrition, pond management, water chemistry and a few others will get you an aquaculture degree. I teach just such a course in fish health.
Try calling local colleges and universities as well as searching on the web for schools in your area that offer aquaculture degrees and certificate courses.
Question: What are the viral diseases in Philippine aquaculture? Their causes, diagnosis and control? Viruses that causes diseases to aquaculture species being cultured in the Philippines.
Answer: There are many.
It depends on what species you are farming.
Fish can get a number of nasty pox family virus when in the close confines of aquaculture. RSIV The red seabream Iridovirus is another nasty one. Clams and other molluscs are susceptible to Norwalk virus and many others.
it would help if yu could narrow down the type of aquaculture and the species you wish to know about.
http://rfdp.seafdec.org.ph/publication/p… has some good journal mentions.
http://www.daasix.org/committee/executiv… is the definitive source on this topic.
Causes: Often over crowding, stress and wrong nutrition. Diagnosis, often visual, but also poor growth, poor breeding. Control. Medication sometimes works, but is not the answer. More infrastructure and monitoring helps.
