Question: In Michigan, are furnace/appliance/etc.repair technicians required by law to return old parts? I recently had a new furnace installed. Without my specifically asking. They removed and replaced an old thermostat. When I asked for it back they just schruged. I want it. I had asked for other of the older parts and they were adiment but agreed? In Michigan, I don't know about other states, auto parts must be returned.

Answer: There is no such a law in Michigan on furnace or appliance repair. You are indeed due back the old thermostat. And if you request all worn out or defective parts returned to you by a tech and they dont do so you have a legitimate reason to withhold payment, even if it was verbal. You are correct in being alert on these matters. Scamming the homeowner in the repair of furnaces, AC, and appliances is ramped everywhere in the country and is costing the public millions and millions of dollars annually. Its simply easy to do to the public due to their technical ignorance and it is done every day, so be alert as you are and continue your vigilance.

Question: Does anyone know of a good major appliance repair service in the Austin, Tx area???? I have a dryer, that is fairly new, that I believe has a short in the ground wire. I tried using ABA Appliance Service, and had the WORST experience of my life. I made an appointment over 24 hours prior to the time they were to come to my house. I work 2 jobs, and it's very difficult for me to make arrangements to have someone at my house during the allotted time. Well, after making arrangements, and having my appointment set, all I could do was wait. Well, the evening before the day of my appt, a lady called from ABA and said that b/c there was only one technician in my area, it would be later in the evening that someone could be there. I said that was fine, and actually worked better for me. Well, low and behold, day of my appt, NO ONE showed up, NO CALLS, NOTHING! I highly, highly recommend that no one use ABA Appliance Service if you're looking for GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE, and someone you can rely on!

Question: Does anyone know of a differnt brand of stove knob that will fit a Jenn Air range? Okay, one knob is cracked - $18 for a new knob, and that's AFTER a discout!! A ridiculous price, probably because of the Jenn Air name. They look like fairly standard knobs, though. Do you know if another knob would work? I thought maybe an appliance technician or repair person might know. Thanks!

Answer: Hello Don: Unless it is the oven knob, any stove knob will work. I picked up a four-pack of generic knobs at the big box hardware for under 10 bucks, and replaced the surface knobs on a Gen-Aire range a few years back. It even came with reversible dials to read clockwise or counterclockwise.

Question: GE gas oven will not light/heat-11 years old, boiler will light? We have never serviced our kitchen stove before. Oven wont light suddenly. Boiler will as will all 4 top burners. Oven has some kind of ignition system since there is no pilot light. Anyone know where we start to troubleshoot this? hubby is somewhat handy. Is this something we could attempt to repair or do we go directly to getting a appliance technician?

Answer: Well, I can spell better than you can – you meant to say 'war of wits' and ‘lawyers’ and ‘their washer’ and ‘everything’ and ‘their refrigerator’. And by the way, who designed these washers and refrigerators and taught you how to repair them – they were engineers and teachers with college degrees, not repair technicians. Sorry, that was low. What I really want to know is why you feel the need to prove you are just as capable as those teachers, lawyers, English majors, etc. If you are Christian, as you appear to be, then your beliefs should also include that although men have different strengths and weaknesses they are still considered equal and equally worthy. But maybe your problem is not religious but psychological. Has one too many ‘highly educated’ person shown his arrogance and disdain towards you? In that case be the better man and shrug their comments off as ignorance and a sign of an inferior character.

Question: HVAC people ! Please help ! Technician says external unit grounded, & blew out the fuses.? He said it must be REPLACED because it was grounded. Is this true, or is this another way to make me pay more? I don't know anything about A/C's, but it doesn't seem reasonable to me that because an appliance has been grounded, that it is destroyed! Couldn't it be repaired? Wonderful answers...Thanx to ALL!

Answer: It seems he said the compresser is shorted to ground in which case the compresser could be replaced. If this is what he said, it means the electrical wiring or windings inside the compressor have made contact with the frame of the motor causing a short. This causes excessive current to flow causing the breaker to trip.

Question: How difficult is it to replace a dishwasher timer dial? I have a GE Hotpoint dishwasher (HDA2030). The dishwasher runs and the dial turns by hand, but the timer does not advance through the cycles by itself. I explained the problem to a service technician and he was confident that the timer was faulty. Of course, he said his charge for labor would exceed the cost of replacing the dishwasher. I found a new timer part online inexpensively and planned on installing it myself. However, I haven't found any manuals specifically for this model. I have seen repair manuals for replacing timers in non-GE and older Hotpoint dishwashers and it looks relatively easy to do, but I'm still searching for a repair manual for my model. So, has anyone had experience replacing a dishwasher timer? I've replaced the dishwasher drain solenoid and other minor appliance repairs, so I'm somewhat confident in my abilities.
