Question: What does it take to become a sleep scientist or doctor? A bit about myself:
I am going into a research/medicine related field of bioinformatics, so it will be easy for me to switch into biomed/biochem/etc if I need a different undergrad degree.
I'm not sure if I would rather be a sleep "scientist" or a "doctor", but they are both as equally attractive to me. I would like to study how sleep works on the microscopic level, and possible develop drugs for treating (neurological) sleep disorders.
I am fascinated by dreaming and consciousness studies, and would like to study how (and why) dreaming and consciousness occurs.
Also, I would like to know if an undergrad degree in Bioinformatics would be acceptable for graduate studies in neuroscience/med school? If not, what routes would I have to take?
Thanks.
Answer: Four years of premedical education in a college or university
Four years of medical school resulting in an MD or DO degree (doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy degree)
One year internship in either internal medicine or medicine/surgery
At least 3 years of specialty training in an accredited neurology residency program
Question: What scientists can practice neuroscience? I already know about neurobiology, psychology, neurology, and psychiatry.
Answer: Neuroscientists..? Doctors, psychiatrists and research PhD's. It depends if you want to work with actual patients or are content to work with tissue samples and animals.
Question: What degree would I need to become a Neuroscience Researcher or Physician-Scientist? I would like to study the brain and become a Neuroscience researcher, but I don't know if I would need a Masters of science in Biology degree or a Masters of science in Psychology. I've tried contacting the people at my local university, but I can't get anyone to answer me and the one woman that I actually got to speak with (supposedly a Biology instructor) did not know what neuroscience is. She said "neuro...whaa???"
Does anyone know what Degree I might need to get a job like this?
Answer: If you want to do research, you'll need a PhD in the field you want to research. If you want to do research and treat patients, you'll need a MD and a PhD - there are many med schools out there that do a dual MD/PhD program. You'll need a masters and you can usually get it on the way to the PhD (enrolling in the PhD program after finishing your bachelors) but the masters alone is not enough to do research or treat patients.
Question: Spiritually speaking, are you a scientist? Any of us here a scientist? Or studying science at a university? Please post if you are or are not, also post your faith or lack of.
Me, I am interested in studying psychiatry, and neuroscience. I am currently a theist.
Please also put your religion or lack of.
Answer: Engineer - Theist.
I do not Trust Religion -- but God as Universal Force is surely there until science comes up for better explanation for the Beginning of Time and Space.
Question: What kind of job can I get with a science degree? I'm just wondering what kind of job I get with a neuroscience degree.
What I mean is that when I graduate i don't want to go into research and work in labs. It doesn't appeal to me because the pay in the UK for research scientists is rubbish, the working hours are quite long and the work is tedious.
My question is what kind of job can i get that is related to my degree but doesn't involve lab based work or research.
Thanks
Also i I don't want to go into teaching.

Question: Where should I study neuroscience? I've taken a fancy in neuroscience and wish to study it so that I can become a scientist in the future. I'll be taking a diploma in business so I'll wish to ask which university provides the best neuroscience degree?
Answer: my father's a neurophysician. rajasthan univ has started B.tech dual degree courses in neurosc. from this year. the second counseling is over. so you can apply in nri quota.
choose it as best ans. YO!
Question: Do you really think scientist will discover the gay gene? Genes influence our physical appearance like eye color hair color right? So since when sexuality has anything to do with the physical body?
Sexually is in the soul aspect of a human, it’s not the physical body , its what we are inside the physical body, a soul could be masculine or feminine where the body could appear as a man or a woman. So many scientists tried to discover the gay gene but they couldn’t and they won’t because science doesn’t acknowledge the existence of a soul, unless both psychology and Neuroscience advances really high and discover what it is, humans at this level of evolution don’t really know who we really are. Racism and homophobia will forever continue until we discover the soul aspect of us which are our behaviors, feelings, emotions, will etc... are composed of. So I think we might as well just give up on the issue with gay gene
Answer: No. The main reason being that most traits are linked to an array of genes and their interactions rather than being a single gene. This is particularly true for the genetic basis for behaviour, something that is already proving to be the case for sexuality.
Scientists are finding correlations between fertility in women and the incidence of closely x attracted people. However, this is not currently pointing toward an individual gene, which may, in turn help to explain the variety seen with sexuality as opposed to everyone being either 100% gay, or 100% straight.
The other point to add to this relates to eugenics, the selection of traits. The idea is that parents can select embryos that do not have so-called 'disease genes' (genes that can result in genetic disorders like MS etc...). However, should an individual gene be located that causes 'gayness' as it were, how long before parents start seeking the right to select embryos that do not have the so-called gay gene (were it to exist)....
Here's hoping my understanding proves right, that the genetic basis for sexuality is a complex interaction of an array of gene rather than a single gene to ensure such eugenic genocide is rendered impossible.
Question: What are the best schools to go to for computational neuroscience Ph.D? Who are the best profs in the field? Who are the best scientists? What type of background (coursework, research experience, undergrad major, et.c) should you have to get into the top 5 computational neuroscience grad schools (Ph.D. program)?
I know the answer to this question but I wanted to verify it on Yahoo! Answers..:-P
Answer: I don't know if its one of the best but NJIT has a good reputation in the field. They also offer undergrad programs in computational biology that would be a good preparation for it:

Question: Scientists say they have located the brain areas that may determine how sociable a person is? Warm, sentimental people tend to have more brain tissue in the outer strip of the brain just above the eyes and in a structure deep in the brain's centre.
These are the same zones that allow us to enjoy chocolate and sex, the Cambridge University experts report in the European Journal of Neuroscience.
The work suggests that some people may get a similar buzz from being sociable.
