Question: Estimate the mean completion time of an assembly! Please help.? Managers at an automobile manufacturing plant would like to estimate the mean completion time of an assembly line operation. The managers plan to choose a random sample of completion times and estimate mean via the sample. Assuming that the standard deviation of the population of completion times is 10.2 minutes, what is the minimum sample size needed for the managers to be 95% confident that their estimate is within 1.5 minutes of Mean? Any sort of help is highly appreciated.
Answer: standard error of the sample is = 10.2/N^(1/2)
95% confidence is +/- 1.96 standard errors so 1.5 = 1.96 * 10.2/N^1/2)
so N = (1.96*10.2/1.5)^2 = 177.6 rounding up is 178.
Question: You work in the Human Resources Department of a large corporation.? You work in the Human Resources Department of a large corporation. Part of your responsibility is to evaluate potential employees for a variety of positions. For which of the following positions would an assessment center work best?
A. A worker on an assembly line
B. A manager trainee
C. A computer programmer
D. A warehouse worker
Answer: B as it assesses strengths and weaknesses
Question: only assembly line robots or some computers, can they really be managers if they have no subordinates?
Answer: A manager is "one who manages." That does not always mean "one who supervises other employees."
Manage is "to handle or control." If your job is to control machines or computers, then you are managing them.
Question: Problem screeching noise. Left front end wheel assembly that goes away at higher speeds.? I have a 2001 Nissan Frontier Pickup 2.4 ltr 4 cyl engine. Auto tran with 78,000 miles.
I had just picked my truck up from the dealer repair center after an accident in july. The entire frontend suspension system was replaced with a good amount of body work to the left front, but I was advised to get a brake job FAST.
I take the car to a Midas brake shop today. The manager tells me i need new brake pads, and rotors on both sides. He showed me the grooves and it wasn't pretty. So 500 dollars and five hours later I have new pads and rotors. He then proceeds to inform me that the dealership goofed on my repair and installed the wrong spindle . He said it was too small in diameter and causing too much freeplay with the bearings. He said it was safe to drive home and to take it to the dealership tommorow morning and demand that they give me the correct parts at no cost or labor.
I am still hearing grinding from the front left brake. I smells like metal. What can i do? Help.
I did also get new bearings from the dealership and the midas manager gave me another set of bearings on the front left(courtesy)
I have my old brake pads and my old rotors, they look like a record and feel like i could sand wood with them.
Do you knowledgable folks believe that it is in fact the spindle/steering knuckle assembly being the wrong size that could be causing the scraping sound, even after the new brake pads, rotors and wheel bearings?
And do you think the dealership would have the parts onhand? Thanks for the fast replies you are all awesome :)
i did as you good folks suggested and took the car back to the dealership . The Cust service rep. said they would dissasemble the front end again to check out the problem but they would need the midas store managers theory in writing. This works out because he agreed to write a letter yesterday and mail it to us. So I will keep you all posted on what happens from here. thank you.
Answer: It does seem that the Midas people were right. A loose rotor on the wrong spindle will allow the rotor to rub against the backing dust plate and cause a scraping noise.
Do as they suggest and take it back to the dealership. The longer you wait the harder it will be to get them to honor the repairs. Hope this helps. Master Tech 40 yrs.
Question: Can someone ask if you are gay on a job interview? I have a friend who works a technical writer at an assembly plant; he's the one who makes and updates all the work instructions.
My company does work for different companies. I recommended my friend for a job interview at another assembly plant for the same position. He had 3 interviews; one with the human resources person, another one with the corporate person, and finally he had one with the quality department manager.
He tells me at the end of the last interview when he was going out the door, the manager said:
"one last question, are you gay?"
My friend answered it was something personal, he is gay though.
I don't understand why he would ask for that in big company for a position in the engineering field.
Answer: That is a violation of your friend's civil rights. There are equal opportunity for employment laws. The federal law protects against discrimination due to age, sex, race, gender, disability, and religion and within these factors fall sexual preference. I think your friend answered the question appropriately.
Question: My IIS Manager on Vista does not work.? I have Vista Premium. I just added IIS7 to it. When I run IIS Manager I get an error window saying:
"The file that stores your list of connections and layout preferences is corrupt and cannot be recovered. The US Manager connection list and layout will return to the default state."
Then when I click on OK I get another "Failed to Connect" error window saying:
"There was an error connecting. Do you want to specify a different set of credentials?
Details could not load file or assembly 'System.web, version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. "
What's going on?
I have .Net Framework 2.0 installed. It comes integrated into Vista. Matter of fact, I can't even uninstall/reinstall. It's not listed in the Programs dialogue and it tells me it's already installed.
Answer: Make sure the .NET 2.0 Framework is installed.
Question: Natural gas hot water heater flame insufficient to produce enough heat to reach needed temperature? I've got a one year old Rheem water heater. Apparently, there is a problem involving the amount of air that is entering the sealed combustion chamber. There is sufficient natural gas pressure. No problems with the thermostat, that has been replaced TWICE. The entire burner assembly has been replaced and the system is venting properly. Yet the flame, an orange one, never gets as hot as it should. Since it is a sealed combustion chamber, there is no way to adjust the intake of air. The inlets are not blocked, clogged, or otherwise. The heater is in an open basement, with two feet of open space surrounding it. Two customer service reps at Rheem say that the combustion shutoff device is likely tripped, and if that's the case, the only way to remedy the problem is to replace the unit because the tripped device can not be replaced or repaired. The manager of the technical department says that if the device were tripped, there would be no flame at all. What else could be wrong?
Answer: Is the basement sealed? I have heard of problems in new construction, where houses are built so tight now days, that these sealed water heaters are shutting down from lack of combustion air. Maybe a fresh air intake flue is needed. Have these customer rep's actually visited your house, or are they diagnosing over the phone? Ask them to send a certified installer to assess the situation. He will be able to ascertain if your heater is defective or not. Good luck!
Question: Who won the Alabama and New Hampshire Straw Poll? Ron Paul Dominates Straw Poll Double Header
Presidential candidate wins big in Alabama and New Hampshire
August 18, 2007
ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA – Representative Ron Paul handily won two Republican presidential straw polls today.
The first contest, sponsored by the West Alabama Republican Assembly, was held in Tuscaloosa at the University of Alabama. Dr. Paul garnered 216 of 266 votes, or 81 percent. Mitt Romney placed second with 14 votes, or 5 percent.
The second straw vote, sponsored by the Strafford County Republican Party in New Hampshire, was attended by fellow candidates Mike Huckabee and Tom Tancredo. Dr. Paul received 208 of 286 votes, or 73 percent. Mitt Romney finished second with 26 votes, or 9 percent. Huckabee and Tancredo received 20 votes and 8 votes respectively.
"Our campaign is growing by the day and continues to build momentum," said campaign manager Lew Moore. "Today's victories demonstrate Dr. Paul's tremendous grassroots support across the country."
Dr. Paul is no stranger to this type of success. The campaign recently won three straw polls sponsored by the Coalition for New Hampshire Taxpayers, FreedomWorks and the Republican Party of Gaston County, North Carolina.

SPREAD THE WORD! Because the media will not!!!
Answer: I really think his campaign is snowballing -we were all tin foil hats before but I think once people really looked into who Ron Paul is they started coming on board - and now the ball is rolling with the media continuing to underestimate the level of excitement this man generates from his supporters (which is obvious from our takeover of the internet and putting signs all over communities - showing up at the meet ups - giving money (there is no candidate who has raised more under 200.00 donations ) - and just speaking and showing what Ron Paul is really about - the misconceptions are fading here comes Ron Paul !

Question: Tickle me Elmo joke? A woman desperately looking for work goes to the Tickle Me Elmo Factory. The Personnel Manager goes over her resume and explains to her that he regrets that he has no jobs worthy of her skills. The woman answers that she really needs work and will take almost anything. The Personnel Manager hems and haws and finally says he does have a low skill job on the "Tickle Me Elmo" assembly line. The woman happily accepts. He takes her down to the line and explains her duties and that she should be in at 8:00 AM the next day. The next day at 8:45 there's a knock at the Personnel Manager's door. The "Tickle Me Elmo" Assembly Line manager comes in and starts ranting about the woman just hired. After listening to his screaming for 15 minutes about how badly backed up the assembly line is, the Personnel Manager suggested he show him the problem. Together they head down to the line and sure enough Elmos are backed up from here to Kingdom Come. Right at the end of the line is the woman he had hired. She has a roll of the material used for the Elmos and has a big bag of marbles. They both watch as she cuts a little piece of fabric and takes 2 marbles and starts sewing them between Elmo's legs. The Personnel Manager starts laughing hysterically and finally after several minutes of rolling laughter he pulls himself together and walks over to the new employee and says: "I'm sorry I guess you misunderstood me yesterday. What I wanted you to do was give Elmo two test tickles."
Babe2uall, i'm not young anymore, thank u
Answer: TEST tickles!! ha ha ha i get it. that's funny dude.
Question: Where can I get resolution to my complaint? (Ford Expedition 2000)? (Short version) My windshield was replaced due to what the repair shop at the dealership listed as a "bad seal from the assembly plant". The Assistant Service Manager acknowledges this and said it is there mistake and that Ford will pay. However...I needed to pay the bill at the time and get reimbursed though Ford. Numerous calls to Ford result in "it's not covered". I even have the top-of-the-line $0 deductible Ford extended warrantee plan. The Assistant Service Manager tells me to speak with his Manager. He even said he told his Manager about my situation. I've left numerous calls and he won't call me back. I'm out $500 and a lot of aspirin. Who can resolve this?

Question: Do we need a new boiler? first inspector said yes, 2nd inspector said no, who do we get for a third opinion We have a 13 year old Weil-McLain steam boiler, model LGB-7.
first inspection report:
Flooded out the boiler on the initial inspection to test the initial
integirty of the boiler. Boiler failed the flood out test. Building
needs a new boiler . Boiler leaks where the top of the sections
have worn through.
property manager says:
He reports that the boiler is leaking badly and either needs to
be replaced before the start of the heating season or all 6 sections of the boiler need to be replaced.
My plumber:
your boiler is quite young and
it is holding water and no signs of leaks
He said call someone else
don't tell them your boiler leaks, just have them give it
an inspection.
2nd report:
start and check, brush and vacuumed burners,
cleaned pilot assemblies, sight glass, checked
flue travels, smoke? pipe pipe started and checked
operation, safety's ok, explained how to flush low
water cut off, let steam ok
Answer: First, what is the certification of the inspectors?
The first inspector may have done a hydrostatic test and found leaks. I'd disregard anything the plumber said. It is not apparent that a hydrostatic test was done by the second inspector.
A hydrostatic test using water tests the integrity of the boiler under pressure. A boiler leak or, much worse, explosion can have severe consequences. Confirm what the first and second inspector did. If there's still a discrepancy, either get a new boiler or a third inspection in which a pressure test is done.
Question: How many jobs have you had? I have been a janitor at 3 places, insurance salesman for 3 companies, lab analyst at 3 places, pipe inspector, assembly line worker, tree planter, glass cutter, carton handler, sewer plant operator, sales clerk at 4 stores, assistant manager, sales staff manager, machine operator, laminating machine operator, chromeplating operator, and saw operator. Also I had a newspaper route for 2 years. I think that's 26.
Porcelain doll, I have a class A operator's license where I am now. I had to take a state test to get it.
I forgot one; I worked for H & R Block for one tax season.
Answer: Same boat my friend, about 27 jobs mostly when i was younger. Its good though it helps later in life makes you a deeper person more experiance it makes you more valuable to more people. I can also show a bad side though if you were fired from these jobs but it seems like you've just been around the block. Good luck to you
Question: How many people REALLY know about other nations? I'm finding the flamewars here about the USA and Australia rather juvenile.
I'm an Australian living in the USA and I have seen both sides of the argument here. On the expatriots site I post on I am generally regarded as a bit of a malcontent because I openly prefer Australia and am only in the USA because my wife is an American and it makes financial/career sense for us to be here right now. I'm also not afraid to point out cultural difference I struggle with.
Now, having said all that, I do UNDERSTAND the differences. Americans and Aussies (or any other nations) alike could really benefit from seeing both sides.
To Australians - Americans may seem obnoxious, arrogant and extremely patriotic to you, but you have to realise - superconfidence in your abilities is viewed as an admirable strength here. I'll admit I bristle somewhat watching CNNs coverage and hearing US athletes interviewed stating flatly that they are "the best" or "the strongest", but this culture values this. If you'd ever applied for a job in the USA you'd see that your CV/Resume is not a simple list of the places you've worked but a list of "achievements" - most often extremely talked up BS like secretaries who were "Managers in charge of administrive co-ordination and information dispersement" and so forth. "Selling yourself" is considered critical in many spheres here - This carries over into other areas.
Similarly, many things seem by Australian standards to be overhyped. It starts at the school level where there are "pep assemblies" to get the kids hyped up for sporting events that are beyond anything I'd have ever believed before I'd seen them (I'm a teacher) - Very much not to my taste, but then I didn't grow up with this sort of thing.
A friend of mine recently came on a Contiki tour to the southwest USA and told me a story of how the American bus driver tried to hype up the largely Australian/New Zealander group at the start of each day - "Are you ready to go to Vegas!?!?!"and everyone sort of sat there confused at how they were supposed to react. If the bus was full of Americans there would have been large amounts of whistling, cheering and shouting. That's just how things are.
Now, to Americans: You guys also have to realise that on the world stage you can look a little insular (I saw in another thread someone flaming a poster for "incorrect spelling" when all they were doing was posting in British Commonwealth (ie: Non US) English.)
Without making excuses for people who are quick to jump on cultural differences, the hype, superconfidence (and willingness to say so) and razzamataz involved with US sporting culture can look brash and abrasive to countries who are more reserved. Australians face similar cultural misunderstandings with regard to the sport of Cricket where the even more reserved than we are people of the sub-continent (mostly India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka for cricketing purposes) view Australians in much the same way as many Australians view Americans - mostly, again, because of cultural differences regarding what is proper behaviour.
The Australian Cricket team, much reviled at times in India and other places as "unsporting" and "arrogant" would never claim to be "the best" in the way US teams do but instead would say something like:
"We have a strong team, but India has the ability to push us all the way and we have to be on the top of our game if we are going to beat them." (The Australian cricket team, although declining a little now has been at the top of world cricket in recent decades).
American confidence, national excitement and a perceived lack of understanding about other nations (although as many Aussies have shown in the anti-US questions, Americans aren't the only ones guilty of this) can look arrogant to others. Personally I really dislike the fist pumping, high fiving and shouting of "YEAH!" that goes on with American teams and supporters too - it looks obnoxious to me culutrally - but I understand it's just cultural difference.
So, since this is a question, I guess my question is - Who understands this? Does anyone agree? Are there others who have lived in both nations?
I'd really like a bit of live and let live during these olympics. As for the games themselves? I still want Australia to thrash the US in every event we can, but hey, I wouldn't be an Aussie otherwise.
DJCJ - No, this is exactly the point I'm trying to make. I agree with what you are saying about winning with grace but the "BOOYAH! WE WON!" thing is part of a deeply entrenched US sporting culture that's not going away. It might not be present in ALL competitors but it will be very common. They can't just turn off decades of cultural expectations about how things work for the benefit of other countries who view things differently.
Believe me, I'm constantly gritting my teeth about cultural differences. There's all sorts of things here that seem really petty and pathetic to me, but at th end of the day it is just cultural and I learn to live with it.
A good example from the other perspective. Australians can often offend Americans with our frankness and our tendency to "call it like it is". In many areas Americans play their cards much closer to their chests than Australians who are very open about everything.
Answer: I just wanted to say that your explanation of cultural differences was stated quite nicely. I cannot speak of the Aussie/American differences in culture, but cultural differences within the US can vary greatly due to immigration. Foreign cultures usually do not become mainstream in the US since the adults in the family carry their traditions to the US but their children become "Americanized". I see the US as a blend of many cultures. It's just a matter of where you look.
My in-laws are British, very proper, reserved and speak proper English all the time. Though they now live in Canada, they have not changed their ways. The are still extremely frugal (they went through the war) and tea is still served promptly at noon. My husband is Canadian, very outgoing and completly trusting of stangers, and speaks American English more than proper English and has forgotten any French he learned in Canada. He grew up in a different era and is not nearly as frugal as his parents. I myself was born and raised in the USA. I was taught to work hard for what I want and take care of it, to be proud of who I am and my country, and to respect others and their cultures. I am proud of who I am and where I am from and not afraid to let others know. I call things like I see them, however I do so with respect. I don't believe in the current American way of being politically correct, afraid to hurt someone's feelings, and I think there is something to be said about old school discipline that has gone to the wayside in the US.
That said, what is this sense of entitlement that our younger (teen) generation of the US has? Is this happening in other countries or just the USA?
Question: Main Event Mafia/TNA vs Evolution 2.0/WWE? I got this theory, what if the Main Event Mafia decides to invade WWE because of Christian Cage is coming back. That then forces the new RAW general Manager to assembly a team. Why not have it be like this
Triple H vs Kurt Angle
Randy Orton vs Sting
Batista vs Steiner/Nash
Chris Cage vs Booker T
Evolution 2.0 vs Main Event Mafia
Gabe I dissagree with you that MEM and TNA would sweep the WWE its not gonna happening Triple H would let it happening! Emma Mccain it was the early 2000-2001, the WWF/Alliance war happened
Answer: That's a very interesting concept actually. Does remind me a whole lot of the WWF and WCW/ECW alliance though in mid-2000's? My dates aren't perfect but I'm sure it was around that time, possibly later. I'm open to corrections though. But otherwise, it doesn't really seem likely it'd happen though. But what a great imagination you have. :)
