Hi, i was thinking about being a surgeon or G.P. when i was older and i was wondering, what is the average salary of a surgeon (neurosurgeon, plastic surgeon and Orthopedic surgeon as these are the specializations i was considering) or the average salary of a general practitioner IN SCOTLAND (because i can only find the salary's of american surgeons). Thanks.
Answer: I found a list of general practitioner resources that can help. http://www.generalpracticemedial.com
Good Luck!
Question: How do I become a neonatal surgeon and what is the job like? Fisrt I want to know how I become a neonatal surgeon. I know I have to finish four years of high school, four years of college, and four years of med school but what exactly should I study? After that, what kind of residency program do I apply for and how many years of internship and residency will that be? Then how long will the neonatal surgery fellowship take?
I also want to know what the job is like. How many surgeries does the average neonatal surgeon perform once they are board certified? And what exactly does a neonatal surgeon do when they are not in surgery? And what is the salary of a neonatal surgeon?
Thanks in advance!
Answer: For general information, see the American Pediatric Surgical Association -- http://www.eapsa.org/
Salary will depend on your experience and where you live, but between $200,000 to $500,000 per year.
When not in surgery, a surgeon will make rounds to check on patients, consult with patients/parents before operations, study, serve on committees, teach students, train staff, evaluate new tools, return calls from referring physicians, and fill out paperwork.
The APS Association's guide to becoming a pediatric surgeon is at http://www.eapsa.org/parents/index.cfm
"Pediatric surgeons must have graduated from an accredited medical school and must have completed five years of graduate surgical education in an accredited general surgery residency program. ... "
In high school: Take science, math and communication (English, & speech classes.) Volunteer at the local hospital or a medical office or a even a veterinarian's for 4 hours a week for at least one year.
In college: It depends. If you want to attend your state medical school - which is considerably more affordable than an out-of-state or private medical school -- then read that school's admisssion policies. Do they want well-rounded scholars? People with a passion for community? Scientifically inclinded persons? A background in the humanities? Tailor your course work to their policies.
However, getting into a surgery residency can be difficult. It helps if you go to a medical school with a good record for surgery. Talk to your college pre-med counsellor if your state school is focused on other topics.
In medical school: Most programs will have a core curriculum -- 2 years during which all the students take the same courses, plus some electives, and 2 years of clinic. You would want to take the offered electives and clinics in pediatrics, some obstetrics, and surgery. You will need truly outstanding grades in coursework, since surgery residencies are very competive. You will also want to volunteer in a neonatal or surgical field -- again, at least 4 hours per week for one year. Medical school student are called "medical undergraduates" -- residency is "medical graduate level"
In residency: see http://www.ama-assn.org/vapp/freida/srch/ to search for for a list of residency programs. Pediatric surgery is a Fellowship level (Grad years 07/08) -- you will need to get a General Surgey Residency first -- this will be 5-7 years.
In Fellowship: Note that there is no neonatal surgery residency/fellowship -- it's either Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine or Pediatric Surgery, probably Pediatric Surgery. Take a look at Freida's Childrens Hospital Los Angeles Program/Pediatric Surgery for the salary and benefits. This is years 7-8 of post-medical school.
Post-fellowhip - experience and coursework in neonatal subspecialty - usually the rest of your life.
So the time line is:
4 years HS
4 years College
4 years Med School
5-7 years Surg Residency
2-3 years Ped surgery fellowship
May you have the very best of luck and joy in your future years.
Question: What can you tell me about becoming a surgeon? I am seriously interested in becoming a surgeon. I am an extremely good student and a caring person, and have always dreamed of becoming a surgeon. I know it is very difficult and competitive. I was just interested to know if there are any surgeons out there or any interns that would share something they discovered about becoming a surgeon, or anything I would need to know. I am just trying to get as much information as possible about it!
Answer: you are always busy, and it can overrun your life. you don't always get paid well, you will have to perform services on patients with no health insurance at times, and you will be on call at some point. it can be a thankless job, but if you are driven with the need to serve and to help, then you would probably do well. it's challenging. but not impossible.
Question: What are requirements to become a surgeon? Hi. I would really love to become a surgeon one day, more specifically a cardiothoracic surgeon. Does anyone know what I have to do? If someone could explain to me what I should specifically major in in undergraduate college, what do do in medical school, and how residency and training in my speciality works. If there is a cardiothoracic surgeon out there, please respond to this! That would be great if you could let me know exactly what I need to do and go through. Thanks!
Answer: These two sites ought to answer all of your questions for you:

Question: How much does a resident surgeon make a year? I am interested in becoming a cosmetic surgeon, and I know you have to compleat a residency. I was wondering how much a resident surgeon makes at a large hospital in a large,in a populated city.
Answer: It depends on the location in which you live. Try searching for Internship or intern wages over the internet. When i first started as an intern the wage was poor for a surgeon it was $50000.
Question: How does becoming a flight surgeon effect service obligation time in the Navy? I am a USNA grad and going into medical school this year. I am trying to get more information about becoming a flight surgeon and want to know how it effects my service obligation. I know that my USNA time make me owe 5 years and my HPSP time I will owe an additional 4. Residency won't count, but does the training I receive to become a flight surgeon add to my service obligation? Thanks for your help.
Answer: I doubt seriously that anybody here can answer that question. I would strongly suggest you contact the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth,VA and see if they can route you to the proper contact.
Question: What is the difference between a cardiac surgeon and a cardiovascular surgeon? i havent been very successful in finding research on the difference between these two types of surgeons. I know they both deal with diseases in the heart, but I just wanna know the difference between the two, such as "does one surgeon specialize in certain malfunctions of the heart more than the other" and "which surgeon makes more money yearly" and "how long does it take to become each of these types of surgeons". I am a nearly 17 year old junior in highschool and i am trying to decide which one of these surgeons i want to be in my path towards pursuing a career.
Answer: Cardiac surgery (involving the heart and great vessels) and thoracic surgery (involving the lungs and any other thoracic organ) are separate surgical specialties, except in the USA, where they are frequently grouped together, so that a surgeon training in the cardiothoracic specialty will receive a broader but less specialized experience in both fields.
Cardiac surgeon means a heart surgeon.
Cardiovascular surgeon means a surgeon dealing with the heart and the blood vessels or the circulation.
Question: What is the average salary of a plastic surgeon? 1. What is the average salary of a plastic surgeon?
2. What is the average salary of a plastic surgeon in California?
3. What is the average salary of a plastic surgeon in Ohio?
Answer: In Canada,
Annual earnings for plastic surgeons vary depending on experience, the number of hours worked, and the type of procedures they do. Most plastic surgeons earn between $70,000 and $375,000 a year.
However, this number does not take into account their expenses, such as staff salaries and the purchase of equipment and insurance. It also does not include the money they make from performing cosmetic procedures. Cosmetic surgery, such as facelifts, is not covered by the government, but many people are willing to pay the costs of such procedures themselves. Earnings from these procedures can greatly increase a plastic surgeon’s income.
In addition to their salaries, most plastic surgeons who work for medical organizations such as hospitals receive benefits. These usually include paid vacation and sick days, pension plans, and health and life insurance. Surgeons who work for themselves must provide their own benefits.
Question: What is a typical workload for a general surgeon after residency? If there are any M.D.'s out there or informed individuals, I am just if anyone could tell me how many hours general surgeons or even specialized surgeons work in an average week? I'm curious because I am very interested in this area of medicine, but at the same time I want to have time for other interest in my life. I am just wondering if this is possible. Is it rare to find a surgeon who works a 40 hour week?
Thanks for your help!
Answer: It depends on whether they are on vacation or in the OR or at home.
Question: What types of sciences does a cardiac surgeon need to take and for how long? What types of sciences does a cardiac surgeon need to take in high school and in college to become a cardiac surgeon and for how long do each of their sciences need to be? It doesn't matter what college, what are like the minimum?
Answer: Take foundational science cources like biology and physics. You will need these for when you take college courses that you need to get into medical school.
You will need to meet the min reqs to enter medical school. These tend to be:
Biology (for majors) x 1 year
Physics x 1 year
General Chemistry x 1 year
Organic Chemistry x 1 year
Calculus
Anatomy, biochem, and other science classes are helpful.
Believe me, you won't learn about anything that is even remotely helpful about cardiac surgery into you're wellll into medical school - 3rd or 4th year. Even then, you won't really be doing any procedures. You'll just be watching.
Good luck
Question: How do I find a good plastic surgeon for ear reduction surgery? I would like to get ear reduction surgery but am confused on where to turn to get a good surgeon. I think it's worth it especially when dealing with cutting up your face to have someone qualified with a good track record; at the same time I'd like to save money if I can. I'm looking to get this done relatively soon if that's possible. My family's in the midwest, would it be cheaper out there than NYC? Surgeons are probably better in New York though yeah? I don't know anybody who could help?
Answer: I would start out with talking to your family doctor and he/she will be able to recommend someone that he/she trusts.
Question: How to overcome responsibility of being a surgeon or a vet? I would really like to be a surgeon or a veterinarian. I know I could get through med/vet school and everything, but how do you get past the possibility that you might make a mistake and be responsible for the death of a patient? Any vets or surgeons on here have some advice or personal anecdote? Thanks.
Answer: Every day, you take risks. When you ride your bike, step in front of someone, drive a car, or make an inappropriate comment. Training to be a vet or a surgeon is a lengthy and rigorous process. You will need to respond quickly to complex problems and unexpected events and you will make mistakes. Practice and hard work will help you become more skilled.
For now, practice feeling confident by engaging in activities that are not easy for you. If you feel scared when you speak in public, join Toastmasters. Yoga, pilates, tennis, archery, whatever is hard for you - do an activity for at least 6 months. Train your mind, body, and core to feel strong. Notice what gives you joy - feeling grateful, content, and happy, will help you feel optimistic, even when you make a mistake. Mistakes happen. And then, again, saving a life is no mistake, it's a gift!
Question: What are the steps to becoming a surgeon? I just graduated as a Medical Assistant, with an AOS Associates Degree. I want to become a surgeon but I am not sure of what steps should I take next or what kind of surgeon I want to be. Any help or suggestions would be taken into consideration and would be highly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Answer: you need a Bachelors degree then you take the MCAT it is like an SAT for med school then you go tot med school for 4 yrs then an intern for 2 then a resident for another two then you can be a doctor
Question: How do you chose the best plastic surgeon for a breast augmentation? I wanna get a breast augmentation within the next month, however I can't decide on which surgeon I should pick, how do you pick the best surgeon?
Answer: Have a consultation with 2 or 3, and ask for references so you can contact some of their past patients.
A girlfriend of mine talked to 2 surgeons before she had hers done. Her boyfriend went with her and the first surgeon spoke almost completely with the boyfriend and practically ignored her. She wasn't impressed with his attitude at all and that he didn't listen to her concerns (she wanted an enhancement but also had some work to be done as her breasts weren't the same size).
When she went to the 2nd one, she knew that was who she wanted. He listened, he explained, and she felt very comfortable with his ability and how he interacted with her and her concerns that she be 'balanced' when it was all done.
Good luck and I hope you enjoy the results!
Question: How do I find a good plastic surgeon for a breast lift? Clothes are just too difficult to find. I can't take it anymore. I'm ready to start looking to get a lift and a possible reduction so I can wear a bathrobe and not cry when I see how far south my girls have gone.
How do I find a good surgeon that knows what they're doing? I know about the board certified plastic surgeon bit and that's about it for now.
Yes, my picture IS sexy isn't it? Ha haaaaa!!
I don't live in California. Besides, isn't that where the 'cat lady' had her surgery? And plenty of other celebrities had surgery out there and they were all butchered, like Tara Reid.
Answer: The best website I know is http://www.plasticsurgeryportal.com it tell you all about the different procedures and gives you information about doctors in your area. Where ever you might me. It is a good source of information. I hope that this helps you and good luck.
Question: Who is the best cosmetic surgeon for rhinoplasty in Arkansas? I am planning on having rhinoplasty (nose job) soon. Could someone recommend a great surgeon in the Little Rock area?
Answer: Rhinoplasty surgery is very safe nowadays. My cousin got her breast reduction, tummy tuck and facelift surgery in India by the company called Forerunners Healthcare .The Price for the surgery she paid in India was very less. She paid 30% of the cost she was quoted in America.
Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. They arrange cosmetic and plastic surgery for foreigners in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low price, as the breast reduction, tummy tuck, facelift and other cosmetic surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.
