Question: How do you find a Nursing Home or Rehabilitation Facility? I am looking for a Rehabilitation facility for my father who has a brain injury. He is currently in the hospital but will be released to a rehabilitation facility soon. They have asked me to find one in Orange County, California for speech and swallowing. Does anyhone know where I would find one?
Answer: The case managers/discharge planners at the hospital will offer you information about the skilled nursing facilities in the area (skilled nursing facilities or SNF is the technical name for "nursing homes" or "rehabilitation facilities").
Sometimes, a case manager will just make a recommendation about which SNF to choose and other times they will provide you with a list.
Sometimes the MD will make a recommendation. For instance, some primary care physicians in the hospital will "follow" patients at a particular SNF. Or perhaps the regular primary care physician in the community "follows" at a SNF.
However, not all SNF's will be able to accept your father. Things such as insurance (HMO vs. Medicare vs. MediCal), services needed (if they have a speech therapist available), beds available, and other criteria will affect this.
It is also recommended that you tour a facility before deciding. You can't see quality of care, but you can see how clean it is, whether it seems more long term care vs. rehabilitation, how friendly the staff is to you, if the other Residents look as though they are receiving good care, etc.
Good luck!

Question: what is the difference between recovery and rehabilitation in mental health? i am a mental health student nurse and its part of my essay question to compare recovery and rehabilitation process..
Answer: Recovery may means treatable case which can return the patient to the previous functioning level. While rehabilitation process means to maximize the patient's ability to perform in terms of ADL, IADL, work, leisure, play and educational aspects. It does not necessary means to return the patient to the fullest occupational function but to enable the patient to maximize the available function and to achieve maximum satisfaction.

Question: What is rehabilitation/restorative nursing?
Answer: There are nursing homes for old folks that can't take care of themselves. There are rehab centers for people that have had joint replacement or strokes etc. that need to learn or relearn how to take care of themselves again. That is wher rehab nurses work.
Question: I want to be a nurse. But what are some specialization? I want to be a nurse that works in a substance abuse center, rehabilitation center or detox center. I am going to a community college to earn my associate in Nursing. If I want to be a substance abuse nurse, will that require more schooling? What is the salary range in Nyc? What is the nurse's job duties working in one of these setting as a substance abuse nurses? What are some of the other specializations for nurses that aren't really talked about that can be done with an associates in a nursing? Thanks.
Answer: The substance-abuse specialty would fall under the category of "psychiatric/mental health" nursing.
If you want to provide care at the practitioner level, you will need to stay in the educational track until you qualify for NP (nurse-practitioner), which requires either a master's degree or the equivalent training in an NP program, followed by board certification and licensure.
If you want to work in the mental-health wing at a hospital after you have graduated, passed the boards, and become licensed as an RN, you apply for jobs in mental health. The hospital that employs you will provide OJT for your specific area of duty. That's the way it works--the hospital that employs you provides the specialized training it requires for nursing in a specialty at that hospital.
From that first job, you'll gain experience in the field and be better able to determine which step to take next.
Can't answer your questions about salaries in New York City. I suggest you call around to the hospitals you are considering and ask for a salary *range* for recent graduates--it's public information, and they will usually tell you what places a person at a point on the range. For example, an LPN who has 5 years experience when earning the ADN degree may start higher on the scale because of experience.
