Question: What are some of the challenges of, and skills needed to be a Personal Support Worker? particularly for seniors...?
Richard Head? Why even bothering answering? Perhaps the reason I asked the question in the first place is to get personal opinions for others, I happen to be very educated in the career, actually. This is Yahoo Answers. One can ask anything they like, and it's not necessary that you try and personally attack them. If you don't like the question..don't answer it! Plain as that.
Answer: My girlfriend is studying to become a nurse, and she had to work side by side with PSW's. Based on her experience, most of them treat their client's poorly (they're there to do their job and make money.
I'd say the challenge would be the ability to cope and thrive in a negative environment (if you are around sick and dying people) and an essential skill would be the ability to be compassionate and caring. The people you will be taking care of are nearing the end of their lives, you might as well make it pleasant for them.
Good luck!
Question: Why is knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology Important to a Personal Support Worker (PSW)? why is knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology Important to a Personal Support Worker (PSW)?
Answer: It is necessary to know Anatomy and Physiology because you are providing basic patient care. For instance, if you didn't know A&P and you had a patient who had abdominal pain, all you know is that they are in pain. In the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, moderate pain can be the result of a gallbladder attack, constipation, pneumonia, muscle strain, pyelonephritis (an infection of the kidney) or an enlarging liver (for one of many reasons). Severe pain in this area could be an infected gallbladder, diverticulitis of the colon in that area and, rarely, appendicitis. Severe pain in the right flank is usually due to either a kidney stone or kidney infection, but a gallbladder attack can begin with pain in this area.
Moderate pain in the epigastrium (the mid-upper abdomen) is present with ulcer disease of the stomach or duodenum, early appendicitis, hiatal hernia and gallbladder disease. Severe pain in this area is felt when an ulcer begins to penetrate (ready to perforate), in pancreatitis (severe inflammation of the pancreas gland) and occasionally during a heart attack.
You see, it is important to know where all the parts are and what they do, to be able to determine what may be wrong with the patient. Anyone who puts their hands on some way in the medical profession should know basic anatomy and physiology.
Question: Why is knowledge of communication important to a Personal Support Worker (PSW)? why is knowledge of communication important to a Personal Support Worker (PSW)?
Answer: Because you may be working with vulnerable, ill , diabled, elderly people. You need to have good communication skills so that they will co-operate effectively with you.
This involves listening carefully (shows that you are empathising with them) as well as conveying messages in a clear manner. And having these skills really helps!
Hope this helps!
Question: What personal strengths(characteristics)does a successful Personal Support Worker possess?
Answer: as hard as it is you have to detach yourself somewhat. its a hard job and if you get very involved and take your work home with you, you end up in a state of depression.
compassion is definitely needed, but you do need to make sure you don't let it bring you down. its very trying work
good luck though if you're going for it =] people need it!
