Question: What is important to ask/tell my gastroenterologist? I am going to the gastroenterologist today for the first time. I have actually never been to ANY specialist before. Do I stick with this gastro problem when describing symptoms, general practice doctors visits for this illness, etc, or will he want to know all my history? Family history?
I know he will guide me in what info he wants, but I need to know if I need to be calling parents to find out what everyone has beforehand.
Also, will my referring general practice doctor have forwarded all my results or do I need to go get them to bring them to the specialist?
ALSO: do they hate it when you have some suggestion based on your own research what it could be? Should I shut up and let him do his job or voice my ideas?
LOL sorry, thats a special intestines and stomach doctor.
Thanks DocQ. Have any time to look at my Stomach Issues, Help!?!?! question for a couple days ago?
THANKS!

Answer: If I were you I'd bring my test results with me. They should be forwarded, but with the new HIPPA privacy laws things get very complicated. It will greatly simplify things for the doc. At the very least bring a complete list of your meds with doses and frequency. (Or better yet, just bring them)
How much history depends on what your complaint is. In general I want to hear about any cancer, any hereditary diseases, any allergies, anything that's still going on. I don't care if you broke your arm when you were ten. I do care about anything that put you in the hospital or was a major deal. (Like childhood rheumatic fever for example). I would give all your symptoms.
If the disease is hereditary then you want to list everyone in your family who had it.
Internet research is a fact of life these days. I wouldn't be afraid to bring it up. Because it sends certain good signals (you're educated, you're motivated, you can take responsibility for your health). But don't be too offended if he/she says it's not relevant because you don't have the 10+ years of training to put it into perspective. (i.e., you probably can't evaluate how good the study was, how applicable it is to your case, and haven't seen a parade of 'breakthroughs' become less impressive after long term scrutiny)
Docs are by nature conservative, a one in a thousand risk sounds small, but if I took one with each of my patients that would mean that I'd going to hurt 3 or 4 people this year.
Good luck

Question: Can a gastroenterologist tell you if you've been poisoned? If so, what are the procedures that are given at an gastroenterologist exam?
Do they give blood tests?
Answer: if you have been poisoned by ingestion, then possibly. they would take blood samples and test for common poisons- organophosphates, heavy metals, etc. they would listen to your symptoms, and narrow down the culprit from there. but the best choice would not be a gastroenterologist- because looking inside of your GIT often tells very little about poisoning. rather, go to the emergency room and tell them that you think you have been poisoned. they will probably take skin and hair samples as well, possibly stool and probably urine samples also.
Question: What can i expect at my appointment with a Gastroenterologist? I have trouble swallowing rice and pasta. It gets stuck in my throught and i have to wait until i throw up or it eventually goes down. I made an appointment with a gastroenterologist because of this problem and i was just wondering what i could expect him to doing during the appointment.(e.g. Will he stick a camera down my throat or something?)
*throat not throught...woops
Answer: He'll most likely just ask you a lot of questions, feel your neck and throat, and look down your throat as best he can without a scope.
If he thinks it necessary to diagnose, he may ask you to schedule an endoscopy, which you would come back for later. It's an outpatient procedure where they thread a camera down your throat. I've had a few done and every time they've sedated me (put me to sleep). They may or may not for you, but I would ask if they would if they plan on doing this to you.
Question: what to expect at the gastroenterologist? I recently had a blood test and one of four markers came back positive for Celiac disease, so my doctor told me to see a gastroenterologist. what should i expect? or what kind of tests do you think will be done?
Answer: Celiac disease is a condition in which small intestine fails to digest and absorb food. They may need to do a biopsy of the jejunum to diagnose this. The jejunum is the middle part of the small intestine. This disease can be treated with a strict and lifelong gluten-free diet.
Question: How many hours does a gastroenterologist work in a week? PLEASE HELP ME!!!!? I am a person who is REALLY REALLY interest in our Alimentary canal and i want to be a gastroenterologist. So Please help me!
Thanks for answering and visiting!
Answer: all doctors work as many hours as they feel like it- many doctors are known to always take fridays off in the summer to play golf. i guess the more they work, the more money they make- so if you become a doctor, it will depend on how much money you want to earn, and you will adjust your work schedule accordingly.
Question: What is the difference between a gastrointestinologist and a gastroenterologist? Whats the difference, and also I want to work with the digestive system, so which one would I want to be?
Answer: The difference lies in the name itself.
Medical specialty dealing with digestion and the digestive system. Gastroenterologists diagnose and treat disorders of the stomach, intestines, liver, and pancreas, including ulcers, tumours, inflammatory diseases (including ulcerative colitis and ileitis), and rectal disorders. He is a specialist to study all the parts of Digestive system.
But a gastrointestinologist is a specialist in studying the illness and problems mainly related to intestines. He will be an expert in colonospy and surgeries there of.-

Question: How do I find a good gastroenterologist in my area? My husband's doctor is a flake, and the people who work for him are idiots. He doesn't even have a nurse that I can talk to. I'm desperate to find a new doctor for him. How do I find a good one?
Answer: Ask around. Talk to friends, relatives, neighbors, coworkers, anyone. A lot of people go to gastro doctors. It is better to go by word of mouth instead of looking in the phonebook. Usually you get a reliable answer.
Question: What would be a ballpark cost of going to visit a gastroenterologist to try and assess a potential problem? Assuming he didn't have to do any special procedures, blood work, etc. Just a basic office visit. For an uninsured person, of course.
Answer: I am going to assume you don't have insurance. When I went to see one, it cost me about $200 cuz the doctor was out of my insurance network. That was just a follow up to a procedure. All together, with procedure, it cost me about $2000. $1500 for procedure, $300 for in-patient, and about $200 for the follow-up. Luckily the procedure and the in-patient were partially covered by insurance. All in all, it's expencive.
Question: What attire does a gastroenterologist use? i have a project and i have to find out what a gastroenterologist wears
Answer: Mine just wears a suit with a tie always but when he goes in for surgery he wears hospital pants hosp smock and a surgeon's hat and surgeons blue rubber gloves disposable of course ..... now for all his surgery tools ;that's another story,,,,,,,,,,,lol
Question: How could a degree in Biochemical Engineering help me as a Gastroenterologist? 10 points for the most informative answer!
Answer: Biochemical engineering, in fact any engineering field, is great preparation for the 'real' world. You will be a fantastic problem solver, be able to deal with massive amounts of stress and you will be a quick learner (all very useful in medical school and medicine).
Biochemistry will give you a sound foundation in basic sciences that are crucial to understanding medicine. It is also a very complex science, which will help you learn to memorize and put together puzzles, very helpful when understanding how the body's systems work together.
Question: How do you become a gastroenterologist? yea from freshmen high school to the job itsefl.. plz help i cant find anything... a real gastroenterologist could help =)
plz guys i really need to know this...
Answer: Information is below.
Question: How would becoming a Gastroenterologist AND a Endocrinologist be beneficial to my patients? The most informative answer wins!...Thanks
Umm...yeah. I know what they are, but I was asking how would doing a fellowship in BOTH be beneficial to patients? Would they overlap in some way?
Answer: That is a lot of training, and you will end up doing one or the other, but not both. If you plan to teach, OK. The extra knowlege will benefit your patients generally, but you will not have the income of both specialties. Be REALLY good in one field.
Question: What is an appointment like a gastroenterologist like? I have an appointment because I have been seeing blood in my stool. What types of test might the dr. do? I'm a really modest person and I don't like thinking about what the appointment might be like.
Answer: The consult isn't bad, it's only when the tests start (stool sample, tubes going in and out) that it's potentially embarrasing.
But the doc has seen everything there is to see, so you'll probably just have to swallow your pride & let him do what he has to do.
Question: Any gastroenterologist or person becoming gastroenterologist in the house? Well i want to know how much money it will take me to become a gastroenterologist, .... from undergraduate to the actual job, and if there are any breaks on they way =) it will help a lot
if anybody has went through the experience... how much have u payed?
Answer: It depends on how much money your undergrad and medical school is.
