Question: What does the job of a risk analyst involve? Looking at different job ads, they also mention things like VB and SAS. What do these mean?
Answer: VB and SAS are programming languages. VB runs everything behind the scenes in excel. If you have excel on your computer, then you also have VB. It's a great language to learn and you can buy good & cheap tutorials in any bookstore/online.
SAS is a different programming language. In essence, it is a combination of Access & Excel on steroids. You need to buy SAS software to have it on your home PC and it is fairly expensive. It's not really one of those languages that I'd recommend "learning on your own". Although, I believe there are student versions of SAS available that are much cheaper.
SQL is another language like SAS, but much easier to learn and get on your PC. Again, there are good & cheap tutorials in any bookstore/online.
Finally, contrary to the previous answer, SAS does not stand for anything. At one point a long time ago it did, but it became so big & powerful that the company felt like the name could stand alone without a need for an acronym.
In terms of the job function for a risk analyst, it usually involves pulling in data, consolidating the data, and analyzing it. You then report your findings and analysis to management. It's a very interesting job, but two things you definitely need are a love for numbers and an analytical mindset with the ability to solve problems.
Question: What is the responsibility of a Risk Analyst? With respect to the insurance industry. Also, seeking recommendation for additional reading for research.
Answer: a risk analyst does the grunt work. the main responsibility of this position is to collect all of the exposure information for the organization and assemble it for the annual submission to the insurance carriers for the renewal. Since a average size global organization (with revenue of a 1B+) will easily have 20 to 35 insurance policies, compiling all of the surveys, questionnaires, financial data and applications can be a task. Oh and usually this process takes place within the 4 months before the policy renewal.
Other responsibilities include allocations, contract reviews, captive management, benchmarking, calculating the total cost of risk and claims depending on experience.
The only reading that I would suggest would be the member thread on www.rims.com. You can get alot of insight into the issues that risk managers face daily.
Question: What is the average salary for a risk analyst?

A financial analyst is concerned with the risk associated with a portfolio of stocks. She draws a random sample of nine monthly returns (expressed as a percentage of the initial investment). These data follow: 2, 5, -6, 10, 1, 2, -3, 0, and 7. Find a 95% confidence interval estimate of the population variance. Enter your answers to two decimal places.
LCL = ____?
UCL = ____?
Answer: I dont know the statistics formula. But some simple averaging gives you 2% average return per month. You said these are MONTHLY returns. 2% per month. Thats a 24% annual return. Most People would love a 24% annual return. Now you're asking for a statistical benchmark called a 95% confidence interval estimate. I dont remember anything from my statistics class. But I would take a wild guess and assume you didnt give us enough information. Whats the minimum targeted return? whats the maximum tolerable risk?

Question: Financial risk analyst as a career option? I am an undergraduate studying theoretical physics with mathematics, and I'm thinking about different career options. One that caught my eye was this one; and I've heard that degrees in things like finance, or maths are most desirable.
I'm wondering if anyone has any idea what my chances of getting into this area with my degree were like? Would I not have enough 'commercial awareness'?
Anyone's opinion on this is welcome, but obviously I'm mainly asking people who work in a similar job, or who just know a lot about it.
Thanks

Question: Merill Lynch analyst says risk of recession is close to 100% - What is your take on this prediction? Here is the article.
http://www.denverpost.com/business/ci_5443615
Excerpt:
>>Merrill analyst David Rosenberg, who previously forecast the Fed would lower interest rates in the second half of 2007, said there are two possible scenarios. With a rate cut, economic growth will slow to about 1 percent. If rates are left unchanged, and housing prices fall 10 percent, the probability of a recession is "very close to 100 percent," Rosenberg wrote. <<
This article was posted in March 2007, before the housing crisis began to hit the fan.
Answer: An economist at my company made these statements:
1. The market has priced in a 100% certainty for at least a 25 bp rate cut next week.
2. It has priced in a 70% probability for a 50 bp rate cut.
3. A recession has always followed two consecutive reports of negative job growth. We just had our first.
4. Overall, a recession within the next year is likely.
His view agrees with the Merril Lynch analyst. I don't know about 100%, but I agree that it is likely.
