Question: What are my privacy rights as a Payroll/HR manager at work? Our company is building us new offices and as a payroll/Human Resources manager I've always been in a locked office with locking cabinets. The owners insist I can maintain in a cubicle surrounded by our entire accounting dept. and buyers office in one big open office. Isn't that some kind of breach of a privicy act for my employees when I am working payroll or discussing HR issues. I am not opposed to a cubicle, I just don't want to breech a privacy act and be at fault. Some people overhear and can't keep their mouths shut about other people business. I have already had one incident with an employee overhearing personal information and repeating it.
All of my employees are at our Retail stores state wide. My work is done over the phone and I need access to my files and computer during phone meetings.
Answer: Do you have a conference room? When HR went to cubicles, the conference room became overworked. Never discuss personal items in the open, deal with it the same as you would a disiplinary action.
What we did is put in higher walls around the HR person and they locked their screen when they left so that it would need a password to log back in (on windows machines it is the window key and L at the same time). Also, a memo was sent out requesting a meeting in the conference room if an employee had confidential info to discuss.
I am unsure about the requirements of the privacy act, but we never had a conflict or confidential information leak.

Question: What is the education paths to become a treasurer, internal auditor, accounting clerk, or a payroll manager?
Answer: Accounting, Taxes, Payroll, Economics and maybe Statistics.
An accounting degree will teach you all of those.
I hope your maths is good.
Question: What do you do if your manager who does the payroll is claiming extra hours and overpaying herself? Do you tell the boss?
More suggestions please! Also, there are only two people in the office.
Answer: Make sure he and the boss aren't best of buddies. You wouldn't want to be caught in a situation were he gets a small reprimand, and is still your manager and in a position to hurt your position in the company.
Question: What is the average salary for an office manager running payroll, a/r, a/p, credit & collections, receptionist I run an office for a large income construction company with seven employees. I am sole responsible for all actions of Quickbooks, a/r, a/p, payroll, quarterly payroll taxes, credit & collections, receptionist, reports, banking, customer and/or vendor liason and more.
Job is currently in New Hampshire. Been doing it since 2002 with added responsibilities each year. Now marketing manager is being added as well. I serve as a sub contractor going in a couple days a week to complete tasks, owner wants me to go on books as employee working 40 hours a week with all of the above tasks from my original question but wants to reduce my pay because I would be an employee now and give a couple perks instead. Wondering what average is for this. I have gone to the websites for salary.com etc. but its asking for info I dont have or wants me to pay to get a full report.
Answer: In what city?
Question: What could be the possible reasons for the fictitious employees being added on the payroll system? ? The auditors of Annaly mortgage discovered that a lot of fictitious employees were on the payroll system and were being paid salaries. Neither the CFO nor the Payroll manager was aware of the fraud. What could be the possible reasons for the fictitious employees being added on the payroll system?
Answer: It could be a way for the company owner to embezzle funds. I have also heard of some drug dealers who get fictitious employment and all the withholdings that go with it, in order to avoid questions from the IRS about how they support themselves.
Question: New manager - need to ask executives to approve a raise for my employee...? I am a new payroll manager - my employee, a payroll specialist, has really stepped up to the plate and made several improvements to her position. I want to reward her with an increase in salary, but I need to submit a request to our executive group for approval. Any suggestions on how to word the proposal would be greatly appreciated. I am asking for a 10% increase in her salary, so it really has to be convincing. Thanks again.
Answer: You need to be clear and concise in your request. In a one page document, state specific, quantifiable reasons for the raise and how her improvements have benefited the company.
Question: what are the differences between the payroll dept. responsibility and the human resource job description ? I am taking the payroll off of our Human Resource Manager and we do not agree as to what is considered payroll and what is Human Resource. She is reluctant to let it go, so I need to show the owner the difference between the departments.
Answer: Although they seem to do the same jobs, they are very different. It's not very uncommon for companies to combine to two into one department to cut 1 or 2 jobs, but it is deffinatley more efficient to have them seperate. Payroll usually runs the checks, or handles direct deposit, makes sure all deductions are made properly, tends to taxes, they spend little time dealing with the employees or employee relations, they are what their title is Payroll. Human resources is very very broad. They deal with benefits(heath, dental, vision, ect), vaction, sick, bonus programs, if the company is a union shop they play a part in contract negotiations, they usually play a big role in safety, and tons more that i can't think of right now. This is a reason also that companies keep two seperate departments, because human resources has so much they deal with. Personally i think there should be seperate departments like this is the whole point of organized managment. It helps keep things in check with each other. If it was pointless to have multiple departments then there would only be one.
Question: Is it legally to deduct money from a Managers Pay to cover the cost of payroll over-ride? Can an employer deduct money from a salaried employee's paycheck to cover the cost of payroll when payroll cost goes over the company's budget. Taking money from a salaried employeee's paycheck to cover his over-ride seems illegal, especially if that employee works six (6) to seven (7) days a week, with no overtime pay, or comp pay to make up for the loss in wages on his/her check.
Answer: see a good attorney they can't do that
Question: can i sue the company i work for because they adjusted my hours in payroll? I have reason to believe that my manager has adjusted my hours when doing payroll so that he doesnt get into trouble for non compliance of schedule. isnt that very illegal? and can i sue for it? how would i go about it?
Answer: You can't sue for it. You can file a request for an inquiry with the labor board of your state. They will investigate and order compensation for missed hours.
