Question: How does one get experience as a financial analyst? All financial analyst jobs seem to require 1 to 2 years experience as a financial analyst. So how does one ever get that experience if you can't get a job without it?
I have a degree in Finance, but since college I've worked as a legislative aide and a legal assistant. I'd still like to be a financial analyst if I had the chance, to use my degree and because it pays well but I don't know how to break into that industry.
Answer: Companies tend to hire recent college graduates into entry-level financial analyst positions (0 yr experience). Those who do get hired directly out of school usually already have experience in the financial industry through internships, part-time jobs, etc. So I suggest you get an internship to start, either through monster.com or by attending your college's career fairs and submit your resume there.
Another thing to note is that you should really tailor your resume and/or cover letter for the financial analyst position, emphasing your finance degree and any skills that may be applicable. For instance, you can highlight your communication skill as a strength, since being a financial analyst requires that you communicate effectively.

Question: How do I become a financial analyst if I have no experience? I just graduated with a finance degree 2 months ago, my big mistake was not doing an internship in my field. My career goal is to become a financial analyst. It seems like I am able to get some entry level interviews but other people that are interviewed have a better chance because they either did an internship or have some experinece. Seems like nobody is giving me the chance, so what do I do? Thanks
Answer: You need to keep trying. One thing perhaps you can do is find some financial analysts at local companies and see if they will do an informational interview with you. There you can ask questions about what the job entails, how they got there, and their opinion on what you can do and who you can talk to. See if there are any local groups in town that would have people that may know good contacts.

Answer: Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) is the most recognized certificate for corporate analysts. Many companies will require incoming management tracked analysts to achieve this designation upon working there if they have not already. It is a rather time consuming and expensive (some companies will sponsor you), but well worth it.

Question: What do Financial Analyst do on a day-to-day basis? I'm interested in being a corporate Financial Analyst but I'm not quite sure what they do everyday. Please note that corporate FAs are different from investment banking FAs (which I have read their day-to-day activities before) and I'm looking specifically for corporate FA duties and activities.
Answer: I spent several years working for a couple of major corporations doing just this. The job of an analyst is to investigate what is going on within an organization and fix it -- from a financial perspective. There are typically a lot of special projects that come out of being an FA. There are typically standard duties that must be done, but it's typically done around month, quarter and year end activities. Other than those times an FA will do what is deemed necessary -- for example, reviewing the value of assets to determine financial write-offs. Some FAs work on the development of new financial systems (I did a lot of this).
To summarize, the job of an FA is pretty flexible and is based on the particular skills of the individual as well as the needs of the corporation in question. I did this for 3 major corporations and none of these jobs were the same.
