Question: How many job titles can one person have? I was wondering how many job titles one person can have at a job at one time. At my last job of 6 years I was the Program Supervisor and also was the Office Assistant and in charge of Accounts Receivable. My main Title was Program Supervisor but I am trying to get a job in the Administrative field so I want to add Office Assistant and Accounts Receivable to my title on my resume as well. It would look like this:
Program Supervisor/Office Assistant/Accounts Receivable
So my question is, how many job titles is one allowed to have? What should I do? Any suggestions?
Answer: I am a corporate recruiter and I view resumes all day long. My advice to you would be to list your actual title as the heading for that position, but then you should highlight your key competencies at the beginning of the resume. For example, you start out with an objective that reads: Results driven professional seeks a career in the administrative field with a stable, growing organization. Then below that you add four or five customized bullet points that will highlight the skills you have for the job you are applying for. In the actual portion where you describe what you did on a day to day basis for that position you can go into more detail about what your actual duties were/are.
The reason I suggest that you use your actual title is that a lot of companies will verify your previous amployment and your title, so you don't want to look like you are trying to falsify what your title was!
Hope this helps!
Question: How do I write a thank you not after a job interview? I had an interview today for a job I really need. I was laid off about 3 months ago.
I'm really not sure how well the interview went. I had to take a skills test (online) which I feel I did well on and then a typing test that they told me I scored well on. I had one interview with a woman from HR, then a longer interview with the Accounts Receivable Supervisor.
I was originally called in for an AR position, but upon further questioning, they are looking for 1 person for Collections and 1 person for Accounts Payable immediately. He said in a few weeks they will need someone for billing, which is what I told him I am most interested in, I also explained that I have an interest in AP since I have done that in previous jobs (along with AR, collections, administrative stuff, etc.). I felt like he was pushing the Collections position, but I'm just really not interested in doing that.
****continued****
I felt like the interview was going well, he seemed interested in my background and asked me a lot of questions about my previous jobs. He asked when I was available and I told him I have a few appointments at the end of this month. He asked if selected would I be able to start next week and I answered yes, he seemed to not mind the few personal days and said that was fine if I needed to wrap a few personal things up.
SO, when we were wrapping it up he simply said "Well, as promised, I will show you the way back out of here.” I thanked him for his time and he thanked me as well and then we said our good-byes. Okay, so now I don’t know what to expect?!?!? I’m not sure if he was just writing me off or if he’ll be in contact.
How do I write my thank-you note? Do I mention any of the uncertainty? Or just thank him for his time and consideration? Please help! :*/
ha ha, I guess a good start would be by writing a thank you notE instead of a not, oops :)
Answer: i always make a habit of writing thank you notes. it shows a number of qualities that managers are looking for in applicants, from good follow up skills, good written communication, eagerness, interest in work, etc...
I usually start with something like...."Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to meet with me. I enjoyed our conversations and look forward to the opportunity to join your organization."
I hope this helps! Good Luck!
Question: Unsure of what major it is? I'm currently working as an Accounts Payable and Receivable Supervisor, as well as Payroll Administrator and Chief Financial Officer for the last year and 2 months. I am thinking of going back to school to earn my Associates for now. However, I'm unsure of my major is supposed to be!
I want to earn the degree that corresponds with my qualifications and my knowledge so far, Can anyone assist?
Answer: A logical degree for you would be one in accounting. In fact, many companies, when looking to hire someone for the roles you've held, specifically state they want a person with an accounting degree.
To be really sure, go to monster.com and look up the listings for AP supervisor, etc. See what degrees are most often listed, and that's the field you want to study. And I bet dollars to donuts it's accounting.
Good for you for going back to school! You may well find that you already know a lot of the stuff from your major courses. In fact, you may be able to test out of some of them, so ask admissions about this.
Go to your local community college. It's reputable, it's cheap, and those credits transfer very easily, should you chose to go on for your bachelors.
Question: I lost my job a couple of months ago and I have an 10 month old son? What can I do to earn money so that I don't have to lose everything I have. I have tried temp agencies, I have tried the unemployment office, everyone keeps telling me that I'm too experienced. I need a job fast and making the money that is pertinent to my experience, what can I do. I am experienced in Medical Billing, Coding, Administrative, Clerical, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Collections, Customer Service, I was an Assistant Supervisor as well, everyone keeps telling me that the job market is slow right now. Anyone know of a way that I can find a job in Lakewood, CA or nearby cities
Answer: You may be a threat to supervisors who fear a know-it-all attitude or, worse, you may be a threat to their own jobs. The interviewer may also be suspicious that you couldn’t handle your previous higher-level responsibility that’s why you are opting for a lower position.
Convince the interviewer that the position for which you are applying is right for you at this stage in your life and career.
If cite increased outside responsibilities, such as a growing family, as a reason for your choosing a new career direction, be sure to emphasize that you still have strong dedication toward accepting challenges and making room for growth.
Also, emphasize your past successes and your strong work ethic. Point out your interest in longevity and stability at this point in your career.
There may be other reasons. Go over the checklist below.
There are many reasons an interview doesn't result in a job offer. The interviewer may think that the applicant:
·Lacked the skills to perform the job
·Was unable to answer questions clearly and concisely
·Didn't project and successful profile and lacked poise or confidence
·Was overly aggressive; personality wouldn't fit with team
·Was unprepared and asked few if any meaningful questions; lack of research about the company
·Was unable to explain unfavorable factors in a resume, such as employment gaps or lack of degree
·Had unrealistic expectations about salary; was more interested in salary/benefits than the job
Almost all interviewing problems could be avoided by taking the time to prepare and practice before the interview. Remember, it is not necessarily the candidate who is the most qualified who gets the job. It's the applicant who convinces the employer that she/he can do the job and become a dynamic part of the company team. The formula to success is part skills and part personality, so make a good impression.
Peace and every blessing!
Question: Anyone work at an office in NJ, NY, or Philly that's hiring? I graduated in early 2006 with a degree in Journalism, and I have had a VERY difficult time finding interviews. I hunt daily, have gotten my resume and cover letters reviewed and raved about, and while they tell me I was wonderful in the interview, someone else came up that was a more perfect fit. I have currently given up on Journalism for the time being, I just want to get my foot in the door with any company to get experience and work up the ladder, basically. I have even tried to contact a temp/employment agency and even THEY haven't gotten back to me. I need help...getting very depressing coming on nearly a year and a half of searching. Again, it doesn't have to be in Journalism...I'd just rather it not be in sales. Just a regular office job. My strong points are mainly writing, analyzing, reading, customer service. I have already worked as a receptionist, an accounts receivable clerk, a manager, and a supervisor before.
Answer: Check out www.guru.com for great freelance jobs. I own my own marketing agency out here in the west coast but I'm partnered with a public relations firm in NYC .
Maybe try applying to PR agencies to be a writer for press releases to gain some business experience.
Question: I need you're help!! I'm having problems at work and need to figure out what to do? I have a job with a small company. My problem is I don't think I'm being paid enough. My husband also works at this same job in the shop and I in the office. I've worked there a year longer than him & get paid the exact same amount as he does. I have many responsibilities that include payroll, accounts payable & receivable, answering the phone, taking orders, dealing with unhappy customers, cleaning, safety supervisor, etc. I am also considered Human Resources but have never had training to do so. This means I am a part of employee reviews and write ups, including my husbands. I work with only one other lady in the office who has been there 10 years longer than me. She is the office manager & makes almost three times more than me. I tried to ask her why I was paid the same as my husband, & her response was "they're on a higher pay scale". It doesn't seem like her pay reflects that. What should I do? Leaving isn't an option. Am I being discriminated against because I'm a woman?
Maybe I wasn't clear, sorry. My husband and I both work at the same place. We have different jobs. My point is my responsibilities in the company far out weight that of my husbands. I take orders also which means that I'm also partly a salesperson. Technically if I am able to be a part of his reviews and even write him up shouldn't I be paid more? I also have been there a year longer than him. I know it's not exactly comparing apples to apples but it doesn't seem fair. As far as my boss, I think it's great she gets paid well. No problems there. I just think I should at least be on the same pay level as my husband. What do you think??
Answer: The legal principle is "equal pay for equal work". If this is being violated, you're indeed discriminated against. However, looking at the hodgepodge of responsibilities you have, "equal work" will be very hard to prove.
A more winning approach would be to systematically list all your responsibilities, your qualifications, and your achievements. Also list the trainings you would need to do your job even better. Finally, participate in a salary survey that shows you what other people with similar responsibilities are paid in your region. Hopefully, this will support your case.
Then ask for a meeting (1:1) with your boss, or the owner of the small company you're working for. Do not discuss this with other employees. Explain all the things you are doing for him, and explain why you think you're being underpaid.
Make it clear that you're loyal to his company, and not thinking about leaving. Also make it clear you like your job. You want to be paid better, and become an even better performer.
Suggest the following:
(1) enter the "higher payscale" right now
(2) get signed up for the trainings your missing
(3) arrange for a performance review 6 months from now to demonstrate that your boss's investment in you has paid out for the company
Question: Does this Job offer look Legit? I recieved this from a possible employer its hard to tell, but already he seems fishy.

Answer: huge scam! notice how the whole email has a generic "form letter" type of feel to it. that's because that's exactly what it is. that same email got blast forwarded to about 50,000 people with a click of a mouse.
reputable companies have web sites and reputable jobs don't come reaching out to you out of the blue. you won't get rich from this crap and it if seems too good to be true, 99 percent of the time it is.
Question: I need advice about applying for a job that was posted 3 days ago after I accepted a position within same co.? I just got hired as a payment processor for a company here locally. It is a big company. I got the job three days ago and have since started. I did not indicate that I had a bachelor degree on my resume because I knew that if I was to be considered for the payment processor job, they would say I was overqualified. HOWEVER, I saw where they have a position, that is an Accounts Receivable manager supporting the same department where I work, but it is totally different duties and the accounting department is seperate.
Should I just not apply, would it be red flag??? I am not sure how this works in big corporate. They promote from within, but I have only been there 3 days. I would imagine my supervisor that just hired me would be fried about it??
Answer: Tricky one but it isn't hopeless. So deep breath and relax.
In the first instance I would speak to your HR or Personnel department and explain that you needed a job so took the first thing that came along but you are actually qualified for this other position. The HR dept will know if this is possible and can give you advice. This is generally the best path in a big corporate. It is best to go along with their advice and who knows an even better position may come along next month when you have been with the company a while and know if you like working there.
Good luck
