Question: Does a non-executive Director on the board of a company get paid a salary? Pretty simple I guess. Generally, does a non-executive Director on the board of a company get paid a salary?
Answer: Usually no. They sometimes get paid to attend meetings but a regular monthly salary would be unusual unless they are also a consultant and providing other services.
Question: Can a non-executive director of a company provide contract services to the company? I.e. if you are a non-executive director serving on the board of a company, can you provide legal advice to the company and get paid an extra fee? I am not sure since a non-executive director is not an employee of the company.
Is this against any rules or code of conduct or the corporations act?
Answer: Not a problem to do this, so long as it is properly disclosed. No prohibition against it

Question: To what degree should a board interact with staff or tell the Executive Director what to do? Should the board of directors try to dictate, through the executive director, how to run the office? Where can one find some guidelines regarding the role of the board as it relates to staff and the decisions of the executive director?
Answer: Depends on the company and the charter of the board of directors. Their job is usually corporate governance, but the degree to which they are involved in day to day office operations depends on the board itself. A good board generally does not concern itself with the day to day office operations unless they afffect bigger issues with which they are directly charged.

Question: What can I do after being Executive Director of Human Rights? I was recently tapped to become the Executive Director of the Human Rights Commission in my City's government. I am leary about accepting the job because I am afraid that I will be labeled as a government worker and not be able to get into the private sector in something I am more interested in. I am 27 years old and hold a BA in Economics, an MS in MIS, and will finish my MBA in May. What should I do? I am very interested in banking and finance.
Answer: If you are from West Virginia, {wvu?} you can do what many of your fellow Mountianeers do. Go and fill up your gas tank and drive as far south as it will take you. That should land you in the middle of Charlotte where there is no shortage of banking industry jobs. :-) Go with the gov'mnt job, I wouldn't imagine that would be a major hinderance in seeking employment down the road. Being in a leadership role should look pretty good on a resume as well.
