Senior Mechanical Engineer Career Guide and Counseling

Question: Does anyone have any ideas for an undergraduate senior mechanical engineering design project? I don't have many ideas right now. My group is comprised of a few mechanical engineers and a possible electrical engineer. If you have any ideas of problems that need solutions that would make a good design project let me know. Answer: I'm an ME freshman, but the seniors told me that their project last year was to design a hovercraft. I have seen videos on youtube where inventors have designed hoverboards (more like planks of wood cushioned by the output of a leaf-blower). It would be awesome if you designed a hover car based on the hover board designs (not another hover craft; HOVER CAR, as in something more refined and family oriented, and possibly street legal.)

Answer: If your project for production, then go for Mold Fabrication, and if in power then fabricate a mill machine

Question: Engineering Physics / Mechanical Engineering / Music Senior Project Ideas? I'm a senior majoring in engineering physics and music. I wanted to relate my senior engineering project to music. It needs to be difficult enough to work on for two semesters. Maybe a new instrument, improving an instrument, musical technical devices, etc. I just can't seem to think of a tough enough project. I'm not very creative, but if you can supply the idea, maybe I can implement it. Do you have any cool ideas for music technology? I would prefer some of your own ideas rather than a list of science fair projects from the web.

Answer: What a cool major you have and I hope it leads to a promising career. About your major. What I see as an emerging field is the development of portable acoustic adjustment devices that one can carry into any room to improve the acoustic quality of the room for the listeners during the performance. And when I mean portable, something a musician can pack in a suitcase, fold out.

Question: Mechanical Engineer School help? I want to be a mechanical engineer but how much years of school do you need? When you graduate your first 4 years of college what's the degree called? (Bachelors, Masters, etc..) What's the degree after you get your 2nd 4 years of college? Would I have a chance of going to college just when I decided to do mechanical engineering my senior year? I should of done it earlier to take advantage of the engineering program at my school. Could I just pick up (mechanical engineering) when I start college?

Answer: You generally require between 3 - 5 years to become an mechanical engineer. Some school offer a fast track program (3 years) and some incorporate co-op work programs (5 years) that ends up lengthening the overall time in school. This is called a Bachelors of APPLIED science. (B.A.S.C) If you did 2 years after your Bachelors, that would be called your Masters. You don't need it to get a job, but if you had one, you could specialize and you might be paid with a higher salary. Engineering is generally a discipline that you mush start from the beginning. If you switch into it, you might have to make up some courses. Good Luck!

Answer: Most mechanical engineering degrees take four years, although students are starting to take an extra semester or two, because they take fewer than the recommended classes per semester. Question: What is the outlook for patent attorney jobs for the next few years? Do you feel that there is an unhealthy increase in the number of people practicing patent law? I am a senior mechanical engineer highly considering law school for the purpose of becoming a patent attorney. However, I do not want to spend three years and 100K+ if there is not a need for patent attorneys.

Answer: As a patent attorney myself, I do not see this unhealthy increase in the number of patent practitioners. On the other hand, I live in Memphis, not New York or DC or one of the main patent areas. There are very few patent attorneys here, and as a result of that, I have plenty of work. I also know of quite a few universities and companies in this area that are looking for patent practitioners and just can't find them. It all depends on where you want to be geographically in my opinion. If you are willing to live in a non-traditional patent area, you should have no problem finding a job as a patent attorney.

Question: How many wrist were wrapped in 2007? I am doing a market plan for my senior mechanical engineering design project.I can't seem to find the data of how many wrist were wrapped in 2007.

Answer: Like all around the world? I would say hundreds of millions!!

Question: How difficult and stressful is Patent Law? I'm a senior Mechanical Engineering student, and have always been interested in law school. I am not, however, too familiar with what a patent attorney deals with as far as stress and job difficulty go. Though I know they make a great wage, I'm far more concerned with the amount of stress and hours needed every day to be a patent attorney, and how much actual engineering is called upon (unsure how much I'd remember after a 3 year break!).

Answer: If you want to be an actual "patent attorney" - and be licensed by the Patent & Trademark Office - there is another exam you have to take - after you have passed your own state's bar exam (or the state where you intent to practice).
