Here are some general things that I feel every QA Mgr will deal with: - verify production test data from the previous day or evening shifts - walk the floor each day (or multiple times) to see/watch what is going on - monitor issues/problem logs - monitor customer complaints / ideally get proactive and contact customers before issues arise - maintain ongoing reports of real-time quality levels of product as well as historical trends of quality (this could also include the Cost of Quality) - manager people (quality staff, engineers, technicians, inspectors, etc) in their department {I personally like to acknowledge birthdays and anniversary dates of my people} - if a crisis arises - work hard at solving it {depending on the organization, the frequency and duration of these can vary a lot} - plan with other departments for quality audits - plan with other departments for quality training / learning events - manage supplier quality issues and auditing of suppliers These are some of the more common things that every manager should be doing. You might want to check out the Certified Manager of Quality and Operational Excellence exam body of knowledge as published by the American Society for Quality (ASQ) to get more ideas. Answer: The project manager has the responsibility for overseeing and "balancing" all the project constraints - time, cost, quality, scope, and risk. He may also be the de-facto QA manager if the project doesn't have a separate QA person. The QA manager's focus is quality - ensuring that proper procedures are being followed, and if they are also responsible for Quality Control, that the final product is also functioning as expected, and that it meets the requirements.

We are a precision machine shop and produce a wide variety of products for the industry. We are an AS 9100 / ISO 9001:2000 certified company and as part of my position it is my responsibility to maintain the quality system to that standard. Durring my initail interview I agreed to start as an inspector (with the inspector's pay rate to go along with it) with the possibility of moving into the QM position if they felt it would work out in the future. Well, within a week I was promoted and have been called in by the owner/president of the company on a weekly & sometimes bi-weekly basis to be told what a fantastic job I am doing and how glad they are to have me. I want to know what the average pay rate is for others in my position, so I have an idea of what to expect/ask for.
