Question: What would be my major to become a Project Engineer in school?read bottom plz? Do i major in Civil Engineering and that would allow be to be a Project Engineer? Or Bachelor of Science? I want to be a Construction Project Engineer
I want to make good entry level income...how long of schooling?
Answer: I know many project engineers who have degrees in mechanical, chemical, civil or electrical engineering. It really depends on the type of project and the engineer's experience and interests as whether they become project engineers or not.
This is not solely the domain of civil engineers. This holds true for construction engineers as well.
Question: My US employer is giving me an assignment to work as a project engineer in China, how much do you make? I need to get an information from folks who are currently doing this type of job. My US employer just told me that they are going to setup a factory in Shanghai and they ask me to go there for a year. I know that the project may take longer so I am preparing myself to obtain as much information from people who have experience working in China. What kind of pay should you usually expect, is it suppose to be higher than what you are currently paid in your US job? How many times in a year are you allowed to visit your family in the US. Do they provide housing or hotel? This is a great opportunity to develop my career, and a sense of adventure too but I just want to know where I stand when I bargain the deal. Please advise.
Answer: These are all issues that will vary person to person, company to company. You need to ask for all this information to be spelled out to you, in writing, so there is no room for arguement down the road. Ask them to write up a contract for you, stipulate the salary terms (is there a bonus involved for completion), will they provide housing for you. Since the term of your assignment is so long most likely the housing, if provided by the company, would be an apartment, not a hotel. Ask them if they will fly you back to the U.S. for visits, and if so, how often and is it going to be business class or coach seats on the plane.
Question: Describe what a Project Engineer does? Read the bottom plz? I am looking into the career of being a Project Engineer. The entry level income is about $75,000 + where I am but what are some tasks that you perform and describe the career.
Answer: Are you looking into being a construction project engineer? If that is the case then you will be coordinating various construction tasks associated with a certain project. For example coordinate delivery and installation of product, make schedules, go on site visits, etc. Find a major contractor in your area and look at the careers section of their website. keep looking until you find a description for a project engineer job. Each company will have a slightly different description for a project engineer. Just look around at the jobs available and see if it appeals to you.

If so then you can try searching on rigzone.com. This is a site about the petroleum industry - mostly drilling and production. There is a "Careers" section. You can search for jobs and post your resume/CV so recruiters can contact you with job opportunities. The site is free to use.
You can also check the news to find out what companies have projects in Nigeria and contact those companies to inquire about job opportunities.

Question: Would Fortune 500 Companies ever hire a Young Engineer as a Project Management Consultant? I currently work as a Design Engineer/Project Engineer for a top 5 design firm and i am thinking of starting my own consultancy .
I think i have the right skill sets to manage and design medium size projects of moderate complexity for large industrial facillities. My question is would managers of companies like IBM, Shell Amgen, Wallmart , target etc ever hire an independent consultant to work on there Facilities or Capital Projects and my second question is is a PE License or a Project Management Certification or an MBA more important in starting a Consultancy Business. Also any tips for Business development
Answer: My first instinct is to tell you yes, but getting your foot in the door will not be an easy feat.
Ultimately, to become a consultant to one of those companies, will have to be by referral. You'll also have to be prepared to explain to them the benefits of hiring you as a consultant vs. hiring someone full-time. There could be a very big market for this if you do it right. Since engineering work can be up and down, it would help the company to avoid layoffs and expensive recruiting fees. I think with the right confidentiality agreement and some good referrals, you could be successful. But make sure you KNOW you have the right skills. Don't just think it. Attitude and self-confidence will go a long way in marketing yourself.
My only question is, WHY? Why would you want to be a consultant vs. a full-time employee with benefits? Make sure you're doing this for the right reasons. Not because you don't think you're hireable or a good full-time employee.
As for your last question, depending on the work you want to do, a PE license is a must. An MBA would be a plus. A PM Cert would be appealing to the companies as well to show them you're well rounded. I'd suggest all 3 eventually, but start with the PE license at the minimum.
Question: How do I become a Construction Project Engineer?
Answer: Study either civil engineering or construction management. You will find many programs of this nature throughout US universities.
I would go for civil engineering and take project management and construction management courses for your electives. An engineering degree carries more weight with your peers, furthermore you will be eligible to get certified as a PE (Professional Engineer), which a lot of companies look favorable upon.

Thanks Pam! i have some specific questions in regards to what you think defines a "promotion"..how can i contact you to ask?
Thanks
Answer: I graduated in '94 with an engineering degree (I was an engineer until about 1 year ago...now I am an engineering manager). Normally, I see between 2-4% depending on the company and how financially sound they are. If I get a promotion, I normally see 3-4% on top of that. And if you leave jobs and take another, you can get 5-10% more.
Question: project engineer or mechanical engineer? Which way to go? I was a mechanical engineer for 2 years and later became a project engineer for 2.5 years an oil refining engineering inc.
Now, when I come to the job hunting in a new country, CANADA, I don't know which way to go? I prefer project engineer a little bit more than Mechanical Engr. coz I think Project Engr. will lead to Project Manager in the future, which will generally have a higher salary than Technical positions.
But the problem is, will Project Engineer has the opportunity of advancement to Project manager?? Some people tell me Project Managers most likely are promoted from Sr. Technical Engineers instead of Project Engineer.
Anyone who knows where Project Engineer will go, how they will advance?
Any comments are appreciated
Answer: Speaking as a Civil Engineer who has been a project engineer as well as other things, I think you are missing one of the major steps to the success that you are trying to achieve.
Trust me.... Either job will get you to a management level. But to get to that level you will have to do it well and show management potential . Promotions to those jobs are not done on seniority.. you must know that by now. You can do the job best if you choose the job that you enjoy the most.
Both roads lead to the same goal... take the one that comes with a smile. I did that years ago and I have never regretted a step.
Question: I would like to work as a Project Engineer (Environmental) in the USA. I speak German, English and Turkish.? Currently I am living in Germany. Who could give me some advises to find a job in the USA.
Answer: Due to the tightening of work visa requirements it is very difficult for an employer in the U.S. to sponsor someone for work authorization. You will find it very difficult to get hired unless you have your work authorization already in place, then you are here in the U.S. and available for work.
