Question: what is the role of a chemical engineer in municipal solid waste management? if a chemical engineering student wants to do research in the field of municipal solid waste management in developing countries what would you suggest to him
Answer: No...I used to work with one. It is a good place for a chemical engineer to work. They help to keep the environment clean and most of the work is clean also. You will spend a good deal of time on a computer doing charts and graphs and keeping your reports up to date. You also get to go outside and check the outflow (water leaving the site) and not a bad job at all.
Now, I never worked in a developing country, but you would be the lead person and other people would work with you.
If it happens that you want to work elsewhere, your education will guarantee another job.
Good Luck
Question: Engineering career question? I am an EIT who has been working for about 1.5 years as a municipal engineer. I am getting limited design experience and my job is boring the hell out of me. I don't want to just take another job to get out of a bad situation, I want one that will steer me into a successful career path. I have an opportunity with illumination/streetscape engineering. Is this too specialized and will keep me in too narrow of a specialty or will it be a good career choice?
Answer: I'm guessing that you're still relatively young...early to mid 20's perhaps?
If so, then you need to better define what your career goals are, before just randomly trying different jobs. At least you are sticking in the same field of work.
Having said all that, if you REALLY can't stand your job (been there, done that) then by all means change. The experience you get with the new engineering position will expand your abilities, especially if you can tie-in the knowledge that you already have.
And design engineers (good ones) are ALWAYS in demand.
Question: nuclear power option is being considered as 1 of the electrical energy sources of the country in the future? a. if you want the engineer in-charge of locating the nuclear power plant, where in the Philippines would you situate it and why?
b.suppose you where the nuclear power plant's information officer, how woulds you convince the people to accept the power plant facility?
c. as the barangay captain/municipal mayor of the chosen nuclear power plat site, would you allow/ recommend the putting up of the plant in your community? why or why not?
Answer: a. I would locate it on Luzon, the largest, most developed island with an infrastructure capable of construction and to supply power to where it is needed. It would have to be near the coast to have cooling water and desalinization capability. It should be in as geologically stable area as possible with design enhancements to survive tsunami and storm surge problems.
b. I would emphasize the economic impact of both the construction and operation of the plant on local businesses and population. I would point out the safety record of existing nuclear facilities of similar design.
c. I would definitely allow/promote the construction in my community; improved infrastructure, services, reliable power, economy would ensure the prosperity of my community.
Question: What career change would you recommend for a Civil/Land Development Engineer with 4 years experience? I'm an out-of-work Civil EIT, and am considering a career change. Most of the work I've done over the past 4 years has been in land development and hydrology, in both private and public sectors. While I was a student I worked in aquatic ecology, environmental engineering, and aquaculture. I've also driven a municipal bus and owned a child day care center, but I'd hope to stay away from those fields for now.
I'm motivated by learning and doing new things, and I enjoy working with water and environmental protection. I like to spend about 75% of my time in the office and 25% outside or on-site. What career change would you recommend and what is the best path to take to get there?
Answer: It seems to be that you are affected by career crisis and you want to have some career change. I have some classmates and friends who are all Civil Engineers and later I found out that some of them became nurses and teachers. I talked to them and they said they want some career change too.
In your case, why not go for teaching environmental subjects like Natural Sciences or have a business of purified bottled drinking water. Anyway you love to work with water. Or another thing is, try fish farming (fish pond) or sea weeds farming. Also, you can be an advocate of mangrove planting and protection.
Good luck and have fun for the new career.
Question: how to be a member of the society of engineers in UAE.? does anyone know how to be a member of the society of engineers in UAE (screening procedure and qualifications) and is it hard to secure a Sharjah municipal permit for civil engineers? because the employer asked for it, and they required for it ASAP.
Answer: Please visit the link giving below to sign up at the society of engineers in the UAE:

Don't know anything about the Sharjah permit for engineers, but as a member of the engineers I am quiet sure you'll find the right people to ask.
Take care.

Question: What excuse will cops have for one of their own ? A POLICE officer is starting a 30-month prison sentence after molesting a 14-year-old girl he met on the internet.
Former PC James Hunter hung his head in shame at Teesside Crown Court as Judge George Moorhouse branded him "an evil and devious man who was anxious to take advantage of this young girl".
Hunter, of Colenso Street, Hartlepool, has since been disowned by his wife of 26 years and his sons, and has also lost his job as an officer in Stokesley with North Yorkshire Police, the court heard.
The court heard how Hunter videoed himself performing a sex act for the girl, while talking to her on an internet chatroom for teenagers.
Days later, the 49-year-old met up with the girl in Darlington and drove her to a secluded lay-by where he molested her.
Prosecuting, Shaun Dodds said the deputy head of a school contacted police after a pupil told a teacher she had been picked up by a male and encouraged to engage in sex acts.
"She said she communicated with James Hunter on a teenage internet chatroom," he added.
"After three to four weeks they exchanged mobile numbers. She told him she was 14 and at school, and he told her he was a 45-year-old engineer who lived on Teesside."
Hunter admitted to causing a child to look at a sex act, sexual activity with a child, and 15 charges of making indecent photographs and videos of a child between January 2005 and August, last year.
Mitigating, Paul Currer said: "He fully accepts responsibility for the terrible consequences of his actions.
"It's a matter of his deepest regret that he has had a devastating effect upon the young girl's life, and not only her life, but the life of her family."
Hunter was jailed for 30 months. He will be put on the sex offenders' register for life, and was banned from working with any children under 18 for the rest of his life.
Judge Moorhouse said: "With you being a serving police officer, this is a serious matter for you in your privileged position to behave in the way you did."
Officer molested girl. Mother says police harassed them.
Plainfield Township's police chief covered up the fact that one of his officers molested a teenager, according to a lawsuit filed in federal court.
The suit says Plainfield police frequently showed up at the victim's house to intimidate, threaten and harass the victim and her mother after she asked Chief Dean Ceraul to investigate Officer Christopher Young.
Young was sentenced Friday to 10 to 36 months in state prison for molesting the victim, who is 16 now and was 14 at the time of the abuse. The victim and her mother lived in Pen Argyl at the time of the molestation but now live in Palmer Township, the suit says.
The suit, filed Sunday, says Ceraul accepted Young's denial of the crime despite repeated pleas by the mother for an investigation. Police followed the mother, pulled her over and parked outside her house for no reason, the suit says.
The mother's name is being withheld by The Express-Times to protect the identity of the teen assault victim.
After state police and the Northampton County District Attorney launched an investigation, they found Young's semen in the victim's underwear, the suit says. The suit says Young denied having sex with the child by falsely claiming he had sex with her mother and suggesting the daughter and mother must share underwear.
Young eventually pleaded guilty to statutory sexual assault.
A message left for a Dean Ceraul listed in Pen Argyl was not returned Tuesday. Plainfield Township solicitor David Backenstoe did not immediately return a phone call Tuesday.
The suit says Young defamed the victim's mother by claiming he had sex with her. In Northampton County Court on Friday, Young said the victim forced him to have sex with her by threatening to tell his wife he was having an extramarital affair with the victim's mother.
The suit says the victim suffers from physical pain and emotional trauma. She was forced to drop out of school and study with a private tutor after she was molested, the suit says.
Young pleaded no contest to charges he lied about his certification when he was hired as a Plainfield police officer in 2002. He resigned as a police officer March 5 of this year and has yet to be sentenced on a charge of unsworn falsification.
He previously worked as a special police officer -- with no arrest powers -- in Clinton Township and Lebanon Borough in Hunterdon County.
The suit says the Allentown Police Academy, the Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission and the commission's administrative officer E. Beverly Young all failed to prevent Young from being hired as a police officer even though he was not certified.
Messages left with the training commission and police academy were not returned Tuesday evening. Nor was a message left for Young at the training commission.
Answer: He lied about his cetification to become a police officer.
He was convicted and sentenced. So, he is no longer, and really never was "one of our own."
He got what he deserved.

Question: Civil Engineering Children's Activities? I am an engineer and we are going to be having a bring your child to work day soon. We are a municipal consulting firm so ideas about storm or sanitary sewers, paving, building those types of things are what I need. The children will be separated into groups by age and the activity can be around 45 minutes long. I want it to be fun for the kids too. If you have any ideas, let me know by Monday!
Answer: Hello,
I'm a student at UW-Madison who's run a few engineering for younger kids events here. While my ideas aren't strictly limited to civil engineering, they may be helpful in the general sense: [you'll have to draw your own parallels to your line of work ;) ]
Given random materials, everyone cross the lava pit (taped off area) without falling in! (you can make it more challenging by taking away materials or make it so some people have to be standing on materials across the pool the whole way)
Another variant on this is giving the kids a bunch of materials and a ball, they can't touch the ball [make up a good reason] but have to move it from point A to point B without carrying it, so they have to stay stationary and all figure out a way to move the ball. For example, someone can NOT just scoop up the ball with a piece of cardboard and walk over to the goal, they would have to scoop up the ball and pass it off to someone else. This activity works best if you cut some PVC pipes in half and make them only use the pipes, and have to move quite a distance so they'll have to create a downhill channel out of a number of pipes with a number of people to get there, it's wayyyyy harder than it sounds to coordinate people to move the ball. You can also make it so if you drop it you have to restart.
Build bridges/things out of cheap stuff (newspaper, toothpick, pasta noodles, marshmallows, straws, tape, etc) - who can build the highest tower, who can make something that spans the greatest distance and allows the matchbox car to drive across it, etc
Airplane that flies the farthest, maybe explain a few things about how real airplanes work (depends on audience, you'll quickly figure out if they want to learn or just want to build/make/eat stuff :) )
Egg Drop is a classic favorite, but someone has to buy eggs and have a place to drop them from. You give each team an egg and they need to design someone out of whatever you give them (roll of tape, paper, rubber bands, paper clips, etc) to survive the drop from however high you want. We usually do it about 30 feet, but that depends on the quality of the design and if you want the kids to feel good or have nothing survive the drop :)
