Question: How can I contact a marine engineer? Hi, I have a report for school and I have to interview a marine engineer, asking them a few questions about there job. I can conduct a email interview because I live no where near where marine engineers could be. If anyone knows a website or someone that would be willing to do this please let me know.
Answer: There are two basic types of marine engineers.
1) Licensed by the US Coast Guard to man the engine spaces of ships. Run and maintain the engines, maintain the ship's machinery as well as all other systems, i.e. plumbing, electrical, refrigeration, water distilling units, etc. The load fuel, transfer fuel, cargo, water, ballast, keep records (logs) of all aspect of running the machinery, write specifications for ship yard repairs, over see contract work. Some ship engines require an engineer(s) to throttle the engines when manuvering in and out of port. They perform damage control if the vessel is injured such as stop flooding and fighting fires. Deal with personnel issues and many more duties. They may work months at a time before going home, but have a fair amount of time once at home. Marine engineers typically earn BS degree that requires four or five years of schooling usually at a maritime academy, 3 or so cadet training cruises, and passing a Coast Guard administered battery of tests.
2) The other type of marine engineer designs ships. These degrees may or may not require licenses or sea time. This has to do more with structural strength, machinery specifications, power requirements, stability calculations, seaworthiness, meeting regulatory requirements, habitibility of the crew and much more

Question: can an elctrical engineer shift to become marine engineer? I am an electrical engineer ,nw working as a marine electrical engineer in a shipping company.i wwould like to become a marine engineer which will help me to reach hieghts in shipping.
Answer: The nice thing about studying engineering is not necessarily the knowledge you gain, but the skills you develop in problem solving. So with a background in engineering of any kind, you have the potential to switch to becoming a marine engineer. What would help you achieve this goal is likely taking some coursework in marine engineering so that you can learn the technical details associated with it.
Question: Does anybody knows hows life of a marine engineer on ship? My bf is a marine engineer working on ship, he gets contracts for few months and he has to be away from me and his family, sometimes he tels me he doesnt get time to mail r cal me,does anybody knows hows really life for sailors on ship?what keep them so busy?doesnt anybody is married with a sailor and hows life without him/her?
Answer: Life aboard a large seagoing vessel is a lot of work. As a licensed mariner I'm sure he is working 4 hours on watch and 8 hours off, plus whatever overtime he has to work everyday. Life at sea becomes very routine, you stand your watch, you work your ot, you nap, shower, eat, stand watch, and repeat. Depending on the type of vessel he sails aboard will dictate how busy he is when the ship pulls into a port. With the invention of the shipping container, ships are rarely in port for more than 24 hours. Shipping has become extremely efficient, and usually it's offload, onload, gas up, restock the galley and good bye. If his vessel is not equipped with the internet then it will be very pricey to make telephone calls via satellite telephone. When the ship is inport he may not have the time to find a phone, or a stamp.
Just as sailing isn't for everyone, having a relationship with a sailor isn't for everyone. You need to trust each other implicitly. Ultimately, you need to trust him, and he needs to trust you; bottomline. Additionally, you have to be strong and independent while he is gone and enjoy the time you get to spend with him while he is home. From a woman's perspective... life at sea is not the romantic lifestyle you see watching old movies... it's hard work, and it is very difficult on relationships, friendships, and on the person who is gone. He may not call or write you often but I can almost guarantee he is thinking of you more than you are of him. It's a hell of a lot lonelier out there for him, than it is for you... you have friends and family around you, he has shipmates. Some of his shipmates can be his best friends and some may be his worst enemy.
All I can say is, if you love him and want to be with him then offer the best support you can to him, appreciate that he is working his butt off, and don't let some other schmuck tempt you away from him just because he is gone a few months at a time. Trust me it's not all that glamorous at sea... He is working aboard a vessel that is moving a commodity from A to B, making sure all systems are working and fixing things when they break, he's not out there catering to supermodels... chances are there are less than 3 females on his ship, if that many.
Question: For how long a marine engineer's contact can be extended? I would like to know,in case a marine engineer working on petrolier ship has a contract for 4months,for how long this contract can be extended and whats the reason of the extension?thanks
Answer: If the ships Engineer was offered a 4 month contract it is probably dependent on the Ships contract, in this case expected to last four months. If the Ships contract is extended and the Officer has performed well he will probably be asked to extend as well. He may also be asked to extend if the company values his ability and expects he may contribute to their requirements when off contract.
Hope this helps.

Answer: Nowadays, being a Marine Engineer is not anymore a good source of fat cash due to global economic crisis. Export and import industries were much affected as well as the declining demand of oil. Many oil producing countries (those under OPEC) had cut-off their production due to over supply and less demand, thus, gas/oil shipment was also affected. Adding to the pain of shipping industries is the rampant hijacking of ships by the Somali pirates that made shipping companies to avoid and divert their routes. Diverting routes has also impact to the income of shipping companies, it would entail delays to shipment of cargoes plus additional fuel consumption. With shipping companies suffering losses, of course, salary of Marine Engineers will be affected or the worse scenario is lay-off from jobs.
The good engineering field that still made good income is a Civil Engineering. Civil Engineers are still highly in demand all over the globe (except USA), especially in the Middle East were economy is still strong. Average salary per month of an experienced Civil Engineer ranges between $8,000 to $20,000 in the Middle East depending on the company (either contracting or consulting companies).

Answer: Nope. The military is strict about degrees.
Question: How do I get a Marine Engineer's License? I was in the U.S. Navy (Machinist Mate). What manuals should be studied and to what agency do I apply for the test?
Answer: Try your nearest U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office (MMO). They will be able to help you toward getting your license. You can also use some of the time that you were in the navy towards your License.
Question: How long it will take for a junior marine engineer to become a Chief Engineer of the ship ?
Answer: About 8 to 10 years if you are diligent and get prompt promotions.
Question: How much does a Marine engineer make? and what does he do?
Answer: The salaries of all kinds of engineering jobs depend on the status of the person involved. Starting salaries are scarcely enough to raise a small family and when fully qualified and employed as a director, the money is enough to have servants and a yacht!
Marine engineering deals with many different aspects of the sea including ships and their docks. On the ship there are a number of propulsive and mechanical devices all of which count as marine engineering, so its a big subject. The engineer may design, construct, maintain, investigate accidents, determine costs, manage others and so this is very hard to specify in too much detail.
