Answer: Here we are testing whether the implementation has worked, and for it to work, the average number of defective parts must decrease, with a given level of confidence. We assume that our errors are normally distributed along a student t-distribution for a 35 sample population. Since we are only testing if the new mean is less than the original mean, we can look at one tail of the t-distribution. So, UCL95% = mean + (t statistic for 0.05 and 34 degrees of freedom)(standard deviavtion)/(square root of the number of samples) The t statistic for 0.05 and 34 degrees of freedom is about 1.692 UCL = 11.7 + 1.692(2.1)/(35^.5) =12.3 So there is a 95% confidence that the average number of defective parts decreased by 0.3. The critical value, of course, would be 12.3.

Answer: Perhaps I am "outside of the box" but Nintendo probably isn't a good idea unless you are "hog-tied" by the ineptness of the company you are working for. You have to get the most out of the equipment, workforce and tools at your disposal. In a progressive work environment it can be very rewarding. You get to go in and make a difference whether it means making more product than your predecessor or saving money. Don't be reluctant to interview the company. Do they have intrusive labor unions or are the employees on the floor discontent and unhappy? Getting people who don't give a s**t to change they way they do (or don't do) their work is not a healthy job. Try to find out who their customers are and see if you can get some feedback from them. Do it casually and tend to chat it up with lower level employees. The guys driving the trucks around know more than people think. This may seem like alot of work but the due diligence and the homework before you are up to your eyeballs in alligators will be your savior.

Answer: Ensuring a product is made to spec...and could meet quality guidelines...also ensuring the product is being made as quickly as it could...so essentially speed and quality management...plus ensuring the people involved are doing their jobs in meeting these goals.

Question: Generic job description of an estimator and proj. manager in manufacturing.? I am in the manufacturing business and there are going to be two job openings in the near future: One for an estimator and one for a project manager. They are both on the engineering aspect of our "jobs". I was thinking about applying for them to gain experience with engineering. I have my bachelors in computer information systems and enjoyed math but have no other engineering experience. The HR manager said they would train me but I'm wondering if I would enjoy this side of manufacturing. What are the tasks these two positions would have? Has any one else switched from an assistant to something engineering?

Answer: The estimator's responsibility is to estimate how much it will cost the company to manufacture or build a certain item. He uses drawings and project specifications for the items to estimate their cost and determine how long it will take to build or manufacture them.. The company uses his estimates to bid the work to a customer. The project managers responsibility is to see that the projects the company is manufacturing or building, get completed for the amount of the estimate, or less, so that the company does not lose money, and that they get completed on schedule. The project manager usually handles most of the customer contact work once a project begins.

Question: if you were on a 6 month trial as a manufacturing manager? and was emailed to attend a meeting with the md and the hr person would that automatically mean you have lost the job happening to partner this afternoon

Answer: It does not look good actually. The hr bit is not good. He is either shacked or reassigned or the terms of his contract are to be reevaluated. But my gut feeling says that he is a goner. I hope not. Best of luck though, and keep me posted.
