Question: How do I get in to a journeyman program? I would like to get a job with the City of Los Angeles. Many jobs state that you need tobe at least a journeyman level to apply. How or where do you apply to be a journeyman? I always thought the journeyman program was when you got hired, and you did a year or so of entry level training.
Answer: It depends on the trade and how much experience you have. My state mostly does their licensing at the contractors licensing or licensing board. You may have to take a test and show that you have equivalent work experience, a journeyman is anywhere from 3-5 years in a trade. Thanks
Question: What is a journeyman certificate? What does it mean to have one? I have a chance to work for a company as a truck driver and one of the bonuses they offer is a journeyman cert after you complete their apprenticeship training program. It claims it is nationally recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor. What does this cert do for me and what is it?
Answer: A journeyman certificate in what field? There are all kinds of journeyman certificates - in welding, plumbing, carpentry, etc. An apprenticeship and journeyman program is a common way to get practical training in a skilled field. The certificate would make you more employable and possibly lead to a better job and higher pay. It would teach you work skills you don't have now, and you would get a piece of paper that says you have done the program.
Question: Is 34 too old to try to get a plumber apprentice job and work up to Journeyman/Master status? My husband has been really interested in doing this lately. He said he has heard it takes about 4 yrs as an apprentice, and then you get a Journeyman's license, and then a few more years to be a Master. I encouraged him to do it and he says he thinks he is too old, and that people usually start apprenticing out of highschool.
Is this true, and do you think 34 is too old to start out? Thanks!
Answer: One of my cousins started electrical school when he was 32, did his apprentice 34-37 and has been a journeyman since. He's union and makes $42.50 an hour. Plumbers make more then he does, what I have no idea.
Question: Does a Navy Construction Electrician count as a journeyman electrician for civilians? How exactly does it work when im trying to find another job after im done with A-school? Would i be considered a Journeyman electrician or would i have to go through an apprenticeship through a union? Also would it be easier to get a job as an electrician?
Answer: No. You would have to be in the apprenticeship program to document your time as an electrician. After "A" school and when you get to your first duty station contact your battalion's carreer councelor. He will have all the information you'll need.

Question: How many hours On the Job does it take to be a journeyman plumber? what about a master plumber? also, what kind of pay would i be looking at as an apprentice and how often could i get a raise? what kind of pay for a journeyman? what about a master plumber? (not ever opening my own business)
Answer: It takes, typically, 4-5 years as an apprentice to reach journeyman stature. There are night classes involved, and however many hours your local union specifies. You should get a raise every 6 months; you start out around 60% of the journeyman wage, increasing 5% every 6 month period.
The pay will be defined by the area you work in. Bigger cities like Boston, LA, Vegas, Atlantic City, etc. will have a higher pay scale because of the cost of living. Places in more rural areas will have lower wages.
You should search for plumber union (and your city). You should find contact information. Classes usually start up in the fall, as they coincide with the local community college and are worth college credit.
Question: What do women thing of men who hold the job title "construction electrician" or journeyman electrician"? Iam just curious, just want to get some opinions. I have a friend who is a Journeyman electrician and makes great money with great hours and pretty much get a vacation anytime he wants.
Answer: I think most of us will not know what either title means, which can be used to one's advantage... basically, he can describe his job any way he wants, all positive, and all impressive.
By your description, I'd say giving an all-good description wouldn't be that far off.
Question: Why did it take so long to become a journeyman? The system of primogentiure was used during the Middle Ages. This means that the oldest son would become lord of the manor, during the middle ages. One option for the other sons was to acquire a trade. A father would pay a master to teach his son a trade. The boy would become an apprentice, and often live with the family of the master. The boy could become a journeyman after about seven years. This meant that he could work in his trade and get paid for his work. Why did it take so long to become a journeyman?
Answer: Guilds existed to control and thus restrict the numbers engaged in any profession. The apprenticeships provided a source of ready, cheap labor for the masters. Plus the last step for a journeyman was to complete a major project (depending on the trade), and that remained the property of the master, the journeyman's last payment for his ticket.

Question: who do we contact to renew a journeyman's plumber license in iowa? my boyfriend was working for b.e and k building the ethanol plant in cedar rapids iowa. he just now realized his journeyman's license expired in december last year and now needs to renew it. he was certified in a different state. who do we contact to get him a new one in iowa?
Answer: Good question, here's the skinny, not all states accept licenses form other states for Plumbing. You should Start by Contacting Iowa Department of Public Health, they are most likely to issue a plumbing license. What state he got his Plumbing License in will determine if he is going to be issued an Iowa License. Here in Illinois we have one of the strictest and longest apprenticeship programs anywhere, as a result an Illinois plumber can go to about any state and become licensed for that state. If he is sponsored by a company they should have the info, if he is a contract employee, he will definitely need a bond, and insurance for his state license. Iowa Dept. of Public Health's website is sourced below. Best of luck!
Question: How do you get an journeyman license with years of experience an 2 years of schooling? I recently moved to Oregon from Nebr. about every job I have look out they require a license of some kind. I am over 50years old and in Nebr it wasn't needed in a ruarl area. I am talking carpentry, plumbing , general repair, some electrical.
Answer: You just have to get hold of some one at the state and find out. In Oklahoma occupational licensing is controlled by the Dept of Health. I'm a licensed home inspector and even though I had around 30 years experience in home remodeling , home repair, electrical, plumbing. It didn't mean beans. I had to take an approved course from an approved school to even be allowed to take the test. Then there were the test fees, state fees, license fees, etc... altogether it cost me about 3000.00 just to get the license.
oh yea good move out of NE I did
Question: How many years of experience does it take to become a journeyman is drywall finishing?
My husband is a drywall finisher, has been for three years. We have recently decided to move and I have looked online for jobs in different areas, but alot of places have listings for journeyman, so I am trying to find out how much experience it takes.
Answer: LOL at jim... I have painted and drywall work for 37 years....2 weeks will not give you enough time to learn to even be a slop artist!!..3 years is effecient time however..and even less depending oon your teacher..and how you learn..1 year is decent...Journeymen apply to union only...but alot of non union companies use the phrase in thier ads.. Give them A call... I would hire a three year person if they were good at top wages..I really do this yu know lol
