Question: Can a mechanical engineer do the job of an industrial engineer? I'm in mechanical, but industrial engineering appeals to me as well. I was wondering if a mechanical engineering degree could qualify one to do the work of an industrial engineer.
Answer: All engineering disciplines have overlaps but there are specialized skills and knowledge that are unique to each.
Any engineer can do another engineer's job at least partially. I think with IE its even easier. It deals with efficiency, operations, flow...etc. Which are not very specialized and are more common to everywhere. The key thing to IE is shop floor experience, its quite unlike being a ME designer or draftsman where they don't deal with everyday movement of materials and people.
I'd say you could do a fair-middle job of it, you could always read texts or take classes to learn the higher functions of IE.
Question: What does an industrial engineer do? I am considering going into industrial engineering. I like the idea of coming up with creative solutions to problems. I also like the fact that it seems very people oriented. There seem to be many different places to work and many different types of projects to work on. Is this an accurate picture of what an industrial engineer does? Do people resent industrial engineers for correcting them, or telling them how to do things better? Is it easy to find a job as an industrial engineer? Is it an enjoyable job? What types of opportunities are out there?
Thank-you so much for your input!
Answer: Industrial engineering is the branch of engineering that concerns the development, improvement, implementation and evaluation of integrated systems of people, knowledge, equipment, energy, material and process. Industrial engineering draws upon the principles and methods of engineering analysis and synthesis. It eliminates waste of time, money, materials, energy and other resources. Industrial Engineering is also known as Operations management, Production Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Manufacturing Systems Engineering depending on the viewpoint or motives of the user. In healthcare Industrial Engineers are more commonly known as Management Engineers or Health Systems Engineers.
Whereas most engineering disciplines apply skills to very specific areas, industrial engineering is applied in virtually every industry, like shortening queues at a theme park, streamlining an operating room, distributing products worldwide, and manufacturing cheaper and more reliable automobiles. Even though the term industrial engineering is originally applied to manufacturing, it has extended it's service to similar fields like operations research, systems engineering, ergonomics and quality engineering.
Eligibility: A candidate who have passed his/her 10+2 or equivalent with science as a subject is eligible for the admission to the Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering
Job Prospects: The job of an industrial engineer centers around the use of people, materials, energy, information and machines in the most effective way
Remuneration: Those engineers, who choose to work in the private sector, negotiate their terms and conditions with the management themselves
Question: I need to quickly interview an Industrial Engineer for my engineering class. It only needs to be by email? I just need to ask a few questions to an Industrial Engineer, such as stuff you do everyday for work, what you study- simple stuff like that. Any volunteers =] ?
Fantastic, thanks a lot. I'll send you an email either tomorrow (friday the 6th, or by monday the 9th)
Thanks again!

Question: Is it possible Industrial Engineer to extend Master Degree for Aerospace Engineer? Graduate in Industrial Engineer but get inerested in extending Master Degree of Aerospace Engineering. Is it possible?
Answer: Of course. The program you choose as a graduate can be in anything that isnt related to your undergraduate. The one hurdle you might have is are the classes that you took during your undergrad. parallel with a traditional aerospace grad. You dont want to get into a program that you will have to do many additional classes on top of your required classes and research. Check with the institutions of your choice and talk with an advisor. To simplify things look on the course bulliten found on the website and compare undergraduate classes with yoru transcript. That should help narrow down the additional courses if any that might be needed.
Best wishes with everything.
Question: How many hours does an industrial engineer work? i have to wright a paper about industrial engineers and i need to know how many hours they work a day, how many sick days they get, how many paid holidays, and vacation time
Answer: There is no single answer to your question. It depends on who the employer is, and of a myriad of factors, including which industry they work in, local legislation, company culture, etc.
I personally know an industrial engineer who works 10 hrs/day, 6 days a week, and another that works 7.25 hours a day (yes, 7.25 hours, it is the contract), 5 days a week. Interestingly both make about the same. The first gets 5 weeks paid vacation, but he gets paid lodging, food and company car. The latter gets 4 weeks paid vacation (whenever he wants). Both get ~12 paid holidays a year.
No idea about sick days, but neither has ever mentioned that to be an issue. In my experience with other companies, those two tend to be the extremes.
I know that in some industries, you are expected to work with no days off for weeks at the time, and then to take a long break (e.g. some oil and mining operations, specially when the work is in a very remote location, like an off-shore drilling platform). In other companies, it is just like a regular office job (9 to 5, Monday to Friday).
Question: Anyone know any information about CSUEB new undergraduate major "industrial engineer"? I was wondering is CSUEB new major industrial engineer a good major to go toward, also is the reputation for this major good? In addition, does people come out successful after taking this major?
Answer: As the name implies, "industrial" engineers are engaged in planning, evaluating, and improving the practices of companies, whether those companies manufacture a product, or provide a service. An industrial engineer's job is to insure that the company's business practices, its technology, its processes and its people work together in an efficient fashion, because efficiency furthers the company's ultimate goal - productivity.
Depending on the type of company you work for, and the particular educational expertise that you attain, you might, for example, study how your company goes about selecting good job applicants, analyze how the company's pay scale and opportunities for advancement encourage (or don't encourage!) good employees to stay, and you might also analyze how employee performance is evaluated, in order to determine whether the company is properly identifying "good" and productive employees, who contribute to the bottom line.
Another industrial engineer might be engaged in a completely different kind of work - for example, some industrial engineers study product requirements of all of the goods produced by a manufacturing company, then analyze how well the manufacturing and quality control systems in place are functioning in terms of delivering the maximum quantity of goods in a timely fashion. Part of this may involved the design of new factories, and even decisions about where to locate these new factories in order to take the best possible advantage of transportation and delivery systems.
Industrial engineering is one of the top engineering "specialties", trailing only civil and mechanical engineering in terms of the number of engineers employed in the US. The two most common industries in which industrial engineers are employed are transportation equipment manufacturing and machinery manufacturing.
The US Department of Labor estimates that opportunities for industrial engineers will grow 20% over the next 10 years, which is faster than average job growth, both for jobs in general, and for engineering professions. The traditional career path for industrial engineers takes them from engineering into company management, so many future job openings will occur as more veteran industrial engineers move up within their industry.
Industrial engineers are generally well compensated - the median income for the field is almost $69,000 per year. Median means that half of all industrial engineers make less than amount and half make more. The most highly paid 10% of industrial engineers report an annual income of nearly $101,000.
If this is a field that interests you, you should definitely get more information. The career pays well, many industrial engineers advance into company management, and the US government anticipates that industrial engineering employment should grow at a faster rate than for many other career options over the next 10 years.
I hope this helped! Good luck!
Question: NGO's involved in development that may hire an Industrial Engineer? I am graduating this year and want to work in economic development. The problem is that the UN asks me for previous experience, and people like Engineers Without Borders don't hire foreigners. I mean, EWB Canada only hires Canadians. Do you know of any group that I might join, as an Uruguayan Industrial Engineer without experience in volunteering? Thanks in advance. By the way, I do have experience in investment planning and evaluation, in sales and in material handling.
Answer: To get a job in the United Nations, you can have a better chance if you take a Masters degree, preferably in the field of sociology, economics or other social science field. Having an MA increases your chances of getting a Professional Staff position. Without an MA you'd be relegated to the General Staff positions - which are lower paying and less chances for advancement. Crossing over from GS to PS position is difficult, though possible.
Otherwise, try UNV United Nations Volunteer http://www.unv.org - they may have openings for your qualifications.
