Question: Is mechanical engineering hard, I would only do it to become an HVAC sales engineer, is the 4 years worth it?
Answer: For me, mechanical engineering was tough, and very demanding of my time, but it was certainly doable.
The "weed out" classes at my University were actually the prerequisite Calculus and Physics classes. These were 100- and 200-level Freshmen and Sophomore level classes but they required an ENORMOUS amount of time doing the homework sets. I spent easily 10 hours a week on math homework and 5-10 hours a week on physics homework for the first two years, and this was before i took a single engineering class.
The hard classes for engineering were not as hard as calculus nor as time consuming as the calculus-based physics. If you can get through those, the engineering classes should be a bit easier for you.
Question: What's a sales engineer do for a HVAC company? This is a second part question from a previous question on what an HVAC is. Okay, I'm going on a date tomorrow, and the girl I'm dating is this really beautiful sophisticated sales engineer for a large HVAC company. What do they actually do? I'm a technical person, and my dad was an engineer for IBM but I'm more of a marketing kind of guy. I'm looking to maybe ask her questions that make me seem knowledgeable as well as interested in what she does. As she's explaining it to me, I"d like to know what she is talking about!
Answer: You know, it might make for a more interesting conversation if you ask HER what she does, and let her explain it, rather than you trying to impress her with fake knowledge. People usually love to talk about themselves.
I assume from the job title that she tries to sell equipment to companies -- like heating & air conditioning equipment and systems. Ask her to describe a typical day at her job, and then have some more specific follow-up questions based on what she actually says (ask her to define certain terms, or ask for more specific details about some vague thing that she said). If she continuously gives only short answers in spite of your attempts to draw her out, then after awhile you can safely assume she probably doesn't like her job that much, and therefore doesn't want to talk about it.
Go buy a few women's magazines from the grocery store and figure out what kind of subjects interest women in general -- you will probably see that gossip about famous people is typical of many of these magazines-- and educate yourself about these topics as a back-up conversation starter. You cannot talk about work ALL night anyway.
Question: I'm studying to become a mechanical engineer. What kind of money do HVAC engineers make?
Answer: I think that you will do well. Consider where the Global climate is headed, this field is, and will continue to be in demand. The larger, Commercial end of the business is where the engineer does the work. The majority of the 'home' systems are done by 'mom & pop' shops. Although, I have seen more high end home systems utilizing boilers to make hot water for radiant heat, hot water coils in the air handlers for forced hot air and the forced air system doubles for the A/C system. The small boilers may also supply domestic hotwater.
With the information age, these systems are becoming computerized to a very large extent. The engineer is also need here.
The commercial end is huge....
My advice is to take a summer or Co-op job in the field you are interested in and get some hands-on experience. This kind of engineer has the potential to dominate the field.
Question: How long will it take to become an HVAC engineer? I currently finished my first semester of Air Conditioning/Refrigeration/Facilities major. I'm good at and fairly decent at science. But as if right now I'm just working on an associates to get into the commercial HVAC field. And I am doing extremely well in my classes. I aced a lot of the stuff and I ended this semester with A's in both my classes. It almost seems like I should be pursuing a more challenging major sense I'm doing so well. So I've been thinking to getting into the engineering side of HVAC when I'm done with this associates. So how would I go about doing that? Like what classes and how much more years will it take me? Oh and I have completed Plane trigonometry already. So how much further on the math am I going to need to go?
Thanks for any help!
Answer: If I were you, after you get your associates, seek HVAC employment to see if you like that type of work. You can make some very good money doing this. It is even possible that your employer may even assist you in some way to obtain further education.
If you do enjoy the work, then consider pursuing advanced studies leading to a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology. All engineers share the same advanced math requirements of having to learn analytical geometry and calculus. After your associates, if you attend school full-time, it should take 2 more years to obtain your bachelor degree. You will be fully employable as an HVAC engineer at that time.

Question: Which companies in USA recruit in HVAC engineering? What is the salary that I should expect? I am a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering from University of Pune, India. I have 1.5 years of experience working in UAE.
Is there any short course that I may take that can increase my chances of getting a job in USA?
Answer: You will have many options. The largest companies are Trane, Carrier, and maybe York. There are specialty companies like Leibert that makes computer room units. You can also get in to the HVAC field by working on ancillary components, such as pumps, fans and filters. In fact, filtration is a great specialty to pursue.
Another option for you is to look at design of systems. Architect and Engineer firms desperately need good systems designers. If you like working with your hands and you can think on your feet, look at building commissioning of HVAC systems.
The pay and benefits are good. I travel as much as I want - without being forced to be away from home. I pull in $90k for a 40 hour work week - four ten hour days with three day weekends.
As for additional training, if you're looking at components design, consider looking at new refrigerants. If you consider systems design, get a certification as a LEED professional or as a CEM Certified Energy Manager. Both have a week or less of training and a test. There will also be experience requirements for full certification. Good luck to you.
Question: What are the procedures to follow for the Proffesional engineer exam in th USA? I graduated from Mechanical power department, Cairo University, Egypt, 2003. I work and live in Kuwait from 2 years ago in Cnsulting Bureau as an HVAC Engineer, and I'd like to go for this exam, but do I have to requalify my certificate first at Engineering board,or what am I supposed to do to be able to work on this exam and be able to fin a job in the USA
Answer: Each state in the USA will have different requirements. Here is the link for the exam in Illinois.

Here is an interesting section of that link:
"UPDATE!
If you earned your degree in a foreign country, you must also have your transcripts reviewed by an outside education evaluation service. IDFPR materials and the PE Rules list the evaluating body as Engineering Credentials Evaluation International. ECEI is no longer accepting applications for evaluation. To get your foreign education evaluated, you must contact:
The Center for Professional Engineering Evaluation Services (CPEES)
PO Box 720010
Miami, FL 33172
800-464-7650
305-348-5049 (fax)
centersupport@ncees.org
If you have a foreign-awarded non-engineering degree, you must contact AACRAO for credential evaluation.
The Illinois Department of Professional Regulation serves as the licensing body for professional engineers in Illinois, and the exam specifications are established by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES)."
I would recommend trying to narrow down the area you plan to work and visit the websites for their professional engineers.
