Answer: Engineering Manager has overall authority and responsibility for all aspects of Engineering activities for the Project. His responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: 1. Representation of the company towards proponent for all matters relating to a Contract. 2. Overall management of the project engineering activities and control of the related personnel. 3. Approval of the Project Master Schedule and control of its fulfillment. 4. Implementation of any step which may be required to prevent or minimize delays, budget over-running, conditions adverse to quality objectives. 5. Responsible for prompt submittal of progress reports. 6. Maintenance and coordination of contacts with the local authorities for all matters related to the work execution. 7. Answer: My dad is an engineer and recently moved into a manager position. He has only a BS. He says this position is given to old timers who know how things work because they've been around for years. I think that is what gets the job - time put in.

Answer: Usually, you would get a bachelor's in engineering. You would need to get some experience working as an engineer, and move up. It would speed up the process to get an MBA or Master's in Engineering Management after earning some experience. If you don't want to go to grad school, consider undergrad in engineering management. It is a relatively new, growing major. You would have a normal engineering major, but you would also take a few business/management classes. You would then get an entry level job as an engineer. This would speed your movement from engineer to manager because of your management classes. The current starting salary for an engineer is around 60k/year. After experience (usually at least about 5 years) and moving up, especially with the master's degree, you could make around 100k/year or more.

Answer: At first glance you might be thinking about redundancies etc but you might flip it on its head and look at it the other way (getting more output for your money) and think about how you could reduce salary in proportion to output and that might lead you along the lines of thinking about creative incentives for reduction in sick days, downtime, timekeeping issues generally.....? One thing I noticed when managing a team was that whenever I brought someone new in they got sick within a month and were off for at least a week (I genuinely think it was to do with a new environment's affect on their immune system). Everyone got full pay when they were off sick and I seriously considered changing the contracts to a minimum period of service before anything other than statutory sick pay was awarded to see if it made any difference to this anomaly

Question: Do most (US) oil drilling companies require an engineering degree as a prerequisite to becoming a rig manager? It's my understanding that almost all drilling companies require that you work your way from the lowest drilling crew rank (roustabout?) up to the position of rig manager (and potentially beyond). I am willing to do this if my educational background (a finance degree from MSU) wouldn't prohibit me from advancing into the position of rig manager. Is it common practice to exclusively hire rig manager that have degrees directly related to engineering or earth sciences? Thank you in advance for your help.

Answer: A Rig manager does not necessarily have to have a degree of any kind to be one. A rig manager is responsible for a lot of things that are widely diversified and are often not directly related to "making hole" such as rig manning, crew transport, crew safety, food and fuel supplies, maintenance of the drilling equipment and parts to support the operation just to name a few. Obviously he has staff that look after the day to day operation of the rig but the buck stops with the rig manager should anything go wrong. Needless to say a Rig Manager would still need to know one end of a piece of drill pipe from the other.

Answer: First, be honest in all your answers. If you don't have actual paid experience, then substitute any volunteering you have done. Second, remember to use the spell check. Also include dates if you can. For instance for #1: At XYZ Company, less than a year after I started (around Month/Year) I was promoted to Supervisor of X people for X dept. Also toot your horn here! I have 1 year experience as Project Leader and a MS degree in Engineering Management from a decent University. How can I find a project manager's job? All the PM's requirements ask for 5 years experience. :(

Answer: Do you stay in contact with any of the prof's from your college? Often they have some connections. Have you made a list of friends, family, friends of family, etc., who may know someone who manages project managers in your field? Have you considered scheduling informational interviews with manager's of project managers? My suggestion ... approach the problem in the same way that you manage a project. Question: NEW Civil Engineering Manager? I am accepting a job as a civil engineer manager (Geotechnical). It will be a new job and It will be the first time for me to become a manager. I did some management before but not in full capacity. What would be the best approach to be more professional and to be a good manager in a short time. Do you suggest any books? Answer: Ask the company if they have training for new managers. Talk to other managers to find out tips and tricks tot he trade.

Question: I want to be a manager of an electrical engineering branch? And I was wondering, should I get an MBA or a minor in buisness and major in Engineering? I want to work my way up to the top, what should I go for?

Answer: Get an engineering degree and live in an apartment. Go to work for 2 years and figure out if EE is right for you. If it is, go back and get an MBA at Harvard or Wharton or someplace good. Wait it out until you can get into one of these institutions. Once you get your degree, you can write your ticket. Don't bother with an MBA unless it is from a top tier (top 5) school.
