Question: Going into Engineering, but what kind of jobs does it lead to? For university, I'm pretty sure I'm going to do engineering; however I'm a bit unsure about which specific course to take & what jobs these would lead to.
What kind of jobs can, say, mechanical engineering lead to.
I basically just want to know what kind of area i'd be committing myself to, thanks!
Answer: hey Greg!
I am Kumar and currently finished with the first year engineering in University of Liverpool.
I am doing engineering in Computer Science and Electronics Engineering.
Engineering is a career / line through which you can move to really any career in the world.
Mechanical engineering is a brilliant branch. There are loads of application of Mech. people. Take the example of Automobile Industry, Heavy Industries and even to IT!
You won't just be limited to Mechanical Group.. you can virtually move to every field in engineering.
Your first year will be dedicated to studies relating IT, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering etc. so you will have a pretty good idea.
Hope you are helped now and do keep cool!
Have a brilliant career ahead.
Kumar
Question: can a computer engineering degree lead to a programming career? for now lets rule out computer science majors..
If i complete a computer engineering degree, with plenty of preparation, similarly to a CS major...would i be able to compete in the real world with CS grads seeking the same jobs?
Answer: Certainly. It will really depend on the specific needs of the employer.
Question: What can a Aerospace engineering major lead to? I know they can lead to building and designing aircrafts but can this major also lead to making defense systems? and what other can it lead to? (if it does lead to defense systems can you give me a little more detail about that portion)
thanks
Answer: For a job at NASA or defense contracting, you will pretty much have to be the best of the best with at least a masters degree from a well known university. A highly recommended book to read if you are interested in learning about aerospace engineering for defense: "Skunk Works" by Ben Rich. The paperback copy of the book costs around $20 but well worth the purchase in my opinion. It sure inspired me =D.

I took aerospace engineering and the bulk of the jobs out there for those who didn't make it to the top are civil aircraft design. It's not a bad job to do, just be sure that is what you want. For me, I pretty much lucked out when I got an internship at Pratt & Whitney; setting me up for the jet engine business. =) In my opinion, it's way better job security and much better pay - as a bonus, I ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would. I don't know too much about the space side of things since I chose aero instead of space for my specialization. But from what I understand, it is extremely competitive.
Question: would environmental management or environmental engineering lead to better paying jobs? I am torn between the two. I really want to get into this field but have no idea where to start. Is it possible to get into this firld prior to completing studies in order to start a better job after graduating? any ideas/suggestions would really be appreciated..
Answer: It is my experience that Engineers garner more respect, and therefore more $$$ than run of the mill scientists.
It will depend on your career path. If you graduate with a BS in either Civil, Environmental or Chemical Engineering, you will need to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam, get a job and work for a Professional Engineer, then take and pass the PE exam in your field.
After that, you will be able to write your ticket.
However, if you lack the discipline to accomplish any of the above tasks, you can do well in Environmental field, but at the sacrifice of $$$.
Can you get a job? Certainly, go to a small environmental consulting firm and beg them for a position (low pay) and hopefully you would get some exposure.
The best way to get a better job is to graduate at the top of your class-grades matter.
Now, it seems that a Masters will get you farther than a BS, but experience will compensate for the lack of a Masters.
If it were me, I would take geology courses in addition to the environmental/chemical/civil curriculum. A double major as a Geologist/Engineer would be an asset to most any field.
As far as Environmental Science goes, most of the BS guys that I have worked with were not as sharp as the Geologists or Engineers (in that order).
If you have the ability to "think like an engineer" you will go far in the field, however, an inability to do so will be cause to go into something completely different.
For the most money, go into Law School after getting out and working. Most of the Environmental Geologists/Engineers that I have worked with that have done this, do extremely well and are highly compensated. One guy I worked with quit and his spouse financed his schooling, and one girl I worked with went to law school at night.
Both passed the bar and tripled their salaries.
Question: What type of jobs can a telematics engineering degree lead to? thanks

Question: What is the perception of US engineering students by top business schools in Europe? I'm planning on applying to a top MBA program in Europe, focusing on entrepreneurship. I have a BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan, and finishing up my MS from the University of Notre Dame while working full time in an aerospace company and doing research for the university. My engineering work experience extends from project engineer, lead designer to systems engineer. (2+ yrs) My biggest concern is the lack of finance, accounting, marketing, and management experience. What is the perception of US engineering students by top business schools in Europe? With my background (2-3 yrs experience), is it easier to get into a top MBA program in Europe or in the US?
Answer: There are actually some advantages to a "foreign" MBA.
Depending on nation, you may have the advantage of multi-language fluency.
You would be a prime candidate for international management.
You would add a level of diversity for some firms.
Hope this helps!
Question: what does a electronic engineering degree lead to?
Answer: A job as an electronics engineer. However, if you do not have a lot of self generated practical experience you may work as a technician for several years until you do get enough practical experience.
Question: how did watson and crick's double-helix model of DNA lead to genetic engineering?
Answer: Its Watson and Crich have shown the structure of
DNA made up of nucleotides. This helps the scientists like HG Khorana and others to synthesize artificial gene of know nucleotides in the laboratory led the others to carry on genetic engineering experiments.
