Question: Can Civil Engineering technologist become either a civil engineer or an architect? Can one major as a Civil Engineering technologist and still go on to become a Civil Engineer or Architect?
Answer: Sure. You'd just have to go back and finish up the courses that are part of the engineering curriculum.
Question: difference betwen civil drafter, civil engineering technologist, civil engineering designer, education required? i was wondering what the difference is between a civil drafter, civil engineering technologist, civil engineering designer, and a civil engineering technition. i've been using payscale.com to find different types of jobs, but it only lists the wages, no job description or educational requirements and i can't find much info on these jobs through google. i also want to know what kind of education of schooling you need for each one? college or university? i'm in ontario, canada if that makes any difference.
any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks
Answer: A 'drafter' just makes the drawings as instructed - little or no design education, just familiarity with symbols and graphic protocols.
These days, probably Cad trained.
A 'designer' knows some engineering, may be an under-grad student,
or even a graduate engineer without a license.
The other terms imply some education, but are not generally defined.
Question: How much is the salary difference between Engineering level job and a Technologist level job? for example is there any difference in salary between a Civil engineer with 10 years experience and a Civil Engineering Technologist with 10 years experience?
Answer: Civil engineering technologists support and supervise a range of functions to assist civil engineers in the research, design, construction and maintenance of civil engineering projects. Typical projects include dwellings, large buildings, railways, roads, bridges, airports, ports and docks, dams and water supply systems.Civil engineering technologists may specialise in the areas of buildings and water resources, soils and foundations, transport or town planning.
Definitely a technologist eatrns more xsalary than a civil engineet!!!
Question: Civil engineer / Civil technologist job prospects in CANADA. What's better payed? What province to study in? I will soon immigrate to CANADA. I'm originally from ROMANIA but right now I work in POLAND in the field of textile engineering.
Once in CANADA I want to start some studies. Civil engineering or civil engineering technologist. Am not decided yet, that's why I'm writing here now. Does anyone know which of these 2 professions is more in demand and which one pays better? What's the difference between them? What province is more advisable to study and then work in?
Thanks a lot, hope I will be able to get in touch via e-mail with the people who know more about this.
Answer: The profession of engineering is more prestiguous and better paid, however it requires greater training and a more rigorous level of certification. In Canada certification (legal permission to practice) is under the authority of each of the Provinces, not the national government, and differs from Province to Province.
At present, the very strongest job markets for you are probably in Alberta and British Columbia though neither have very large textile industies.
Here is the website for professional engineers in British Columbia:
http://www.apeg.bc.ca/
And here is the website for technologists in British Columbia:
http://www.asttbc.org/
Here is a website for an educational institution in BC having programmes in engineering:
http://www.civil.ubc.ca/
And here is a website for an educational institution in BC having programmes in engineering technology:
http://www.bcit.ca/path/engineering/prog…
This will give you examples of what the situation is in that province.
Good luck.
Question: Civil engineering or construction management? Trying to decide whether to major in civil engineering technology or construction management. Any information is appreciated. Would like personal experience from any civil technologists and construction managers. Thanks
Answer: Civil engineers are in high demand. It is one of the only majors that has a built in career with only a bachelors degree. All my other friends are in grad school and I've been working as an engineer with a full salary for years.
Construction management is mainly on site and tends to be more outside work in all weather conditions. Engineering tends to be more design oriented and mainly in an office settings but can easily tend toward construction management. An engineer can easily transfer to construction, but a construction manager cannot easily become an engineer. The best CM's are engineers first. If you're not sure, start out as an engineer then go work for a construction firm.
Question: civil engineers and civil engineer technologists , whats the difference? i live in ottawa ontario and am planning on going to college instead of university. im 16yrs old and not too sure what i want to do with the rest of my life. i was looking at a program list for a college i would like to go to and there was a class for those who are interested in becoming a civil engineering technician . i thought this sounded cool , not just the name but the description of the course and after some searching on the internet i found that there are civil engineers and then civil engineer techs. what's the difference? could someone please explain to me what the difference is between the two and maybe include what a civil engineer tech is responsible for as well as there salaries ? anyways thanks a lot for any answers... p.s (yes i know this is getting ridiculously long now) for the course requirements it does not even mention physics, i have always thought that engineering had a lot to do with physics anyway if someone can answer that bag full of questions it would very appreciated ;)
Answer: Techs are not considered engineers.
In my experience (mechanical engineering) they do my drafting and superfluous paperwork.
It is usually a two year degree and often times is titled as an "associates" degree.
They make significantly less money than a regular engineer (bachelor's degree) and are usually layed-off first because I can do their job but they can't do mine.
I would suggest you go for the full engineering degree. It will be more work but it is more valuable over your life-span.
Question: How hard is the maths on a Civil Engineering BEng ? I have just finished my first year of civil engineering. The course at first was a BSc. However due changes the university is now making two new degree courses.
So therefore the university is splitting up our year into 2 groups now depending on our year 1 results. The ones who did well in the maths related subjects will go onto BEng. The ones who did weaker at the maths ones will go onto another type of civil engineering couse that hasnt been decided yet.
Here is my first year results the ones with * are the ones mathematical and are assessed
structural mechanics * A15
structural design * A14
Contract procedures B11
Mathematics for Technologists * B12
Engineering Technology C10
Engineering Skills B12
Fundamentals of Geotechnics * B13
Site Surveying * B13
They ones assessd only need to be a B10 to go onto BEng. So it overall looks i have done very well. However i only did maths up till GCSE and a bit at A level. So im fearing i may slip up once the maths gets harder in year 2 (Although i got B12 for the pure maths module).
Do you think i would cope fine?
(I am going to talk to lecturers but would like advice from someone has been there and done it recently)
Answer: It might get tricky if they go into dynamic loading on structures and calculation of harmonic modes, etc. That's where you'll start needing to solve differential equations and stuff.
But if you've made it that far, you can do the rest with a bit of time, effort and perseverance.
Don't sell yourself short. Go for it!
