Question: Is someone petite suitable to be a CNC machinist? I am planning on taking a vocational course on CNC machinist.
Is it suitable for someone petite?
Female
5'
95 lbs
What is the chance of getting hire for someone petite? Does the job require lifting?
Or I should take other courses?
I enjoy working with machine or things more than people.
Answer: The job will require lifting if you are changing from vises and fixtures. You may get some looks from potential employers based on your appearance. Not a lot of petite women go into that line of work. If you show them you can do the job and have the knowledge, you should have no problem.
Question: Does anyone know where I can get information on a CNC machinist? Like blue prints, and what the CNC Machinist actually does?
-Thanks... Tom
Answer: CNC Machinists take raw steel or metal and bore, cut, drill, etc. to specific dimensions according to a blueprint.Usually for automobile parts or machine parts. Talk to someone at a technical college or an operator at a machine shop. Check out this web-site for some info and online courses.

Question: I'm an experienced cnc machinist that would like to do some work on the side.Where can I find some work? I 'm in N Y and I have a manual lathe and small CNC mill. Moreover, I have some experience in welding. Can someone give me an advice how to get some work?
Answer: There are hundreds of small suppliers to the government that make everything that the military uses. The small electronic manufacturers sub contract out the cabinets etc. that they need. They are all in a little circle, it's not a closed one, you just need to find a way into it. Some of the smallest contractors in your area can be owned by an native American female and turning over millions because of the way the government deals out contracts. A big company is not always better, go knock on some little doors.
Question: Can anyone tell me about being a CNC machinist? I was thinking about entering a program for CNC(computer numerical control) training, is it a good Job what about the pay, is it an in demand skill?
Answer: Median hourly earnings of machinists were $16.33 in May 2004. The middle 50 percent earned between $12.84 and $20.33. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $10.08, while the top 10 percent earned more than $24.34. Median hourly earnings in the manufacturing industries employing the largest number of machinists in May 2004 were:
Aerospace product and parts manufacturing $17.78
Motor vehicle parts manufacturing 17.46
Metalworking machinery manufacturing 17.06
Machine shops; turned product; and screw, nut, and bolt manufacturing 15.87
Employment services 11.09
Apprentices earn much less than machinists, but earnings increase quickly as they improve their skills. Also most employers pay for apprentices’ training classes.
Question: Looking for a well paying cnc machinist job in a small town away from the city. Any ideas? Preferably day shift, because I am raising a 6 year old on my own.
Answer: Here's what I would do:
1/ Figure out what type of industries would use a cnc machinist (if you don't already know). You could just search for manufacturers or manufacturing in general, too.
2/ Determine what geographical area you want to work in (city/state/zip code) that is near where you want to be.
3/ Then go to a search engine that allows you to search by business type and things near a location, like searchbug.com
Here is a link: http://www.searchbug.com/companyfinder/b…
4/ Analyze the list of companies you get. How I would select which to target for better pay and benefits from this list would be to look at which are union, where their home office is located, and if they are on the Fortune 500.
In my experence, when I was in FL, although companies that are in FL typically don't pay that well, if you found one that was based in the NE US, was union in at least some of their facilities, or was a Fortune 500 company, they generally paid better.
As far as work hours, I would look at either first or third shift. More options
About third shift- If you can stand it, third shift pays better bec of the shift differential and it's is easier to get a job on third than first shift. You can get an overnight sitter, or offer someone with kids a little extra to have your 6 year old sleep at their house. If you did take a third shift job, you can always bid for first shift jobs once they become open (check company's policy for how long you have to wait to bid out once you are hired, usually 6-18 months)
Write a good resume, send it to their HR dept, follow it with a phone call, follow up every 2-3 weeks after that just to check for openings. Also, call and talk to their prd manager and let them know you are looking and interested. Some ppl will talk to you, some won't, but in my experience, the aggressive, but nice candidate (ME!) gets the job.
Also post your resume on Monster.com, hotjobs.com and jobsearch.org as well as looking there for openings.
Good luck to you, I hope this info helps.
Question: What type of math skills will I be required to know in order to become a CNC machinist?
Answer: Here are my choices
arithmetic, geometry, trig these are a given for the work day to day.
If your going to do some CAD work its a big help to know it too.
statistics because you need to understand error in the machine and its production to be good at what you will do.
calculus & physics would help understand speeds, volumes, force, momentum, strength, hydraulics.
Computer course, the machines run on programs so get some hands on. Typically these programs are passed down from the CAD tools but your still have to submit them.
Get a copy of the machinist handbook it will give a heads up.
You can get by on less, lots have, but its more difficult to have the answers to the why questions a manager would need.
Question: how does someone get experience as a cnc machinist? they want experience; don't you have to get a job to get that experience? it's ridiculous.
Answer: My work is hiring people now with no experience. Keep looking or goto school Most community colleges have programs.
Question: How much math is required to be a CNC machinist?
Answer: know some trig, or at least some of the formulas , they will come up from time to time...if you get in to a place where you need to do some of that math and you get stuck ask someone (whose nice) .
Question: what is the work like in a machine shop, or a cnc machinist?
Answer: Depends on the shop. Most places use cranes for the heavy stuff. Most give breaks a couple of times during the day including lunch. It's pretty dirty and noisy. You gotta know what your doing or you won't have a job very long.I'm not sure exactly what else your wanting to know.
