Question: Switching careers.. I have this huge fascination with Psychology but I am currently an Application Engineer? I keep hearing from many of my peers that switching is stupid, you are too late in the game, you need to get serious and stick with reality. But I constantly dwell on switching to psychology.
Ever since I was young, I wanted to become a doctor. When I was in high school, the fascination grew on why we are the way we are, and how the brain functioned, and so I wanted to go to medical school to become a psychiatrist. I wanted to help the mentally ill. I wanted to save the world I guess. The school was abroad and was cheaper than going here. I couldn't afford going to med school here, and my parents were willing to pay for my college education. So, instead, I stayed because of my ex. I loved her to death and didn't want to leave her. So I went to a cheaper school here in the US and became an engineer, thanks to my engineer father who pushed me in the "right" direction. I really had no choice because they were paying. Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this.
Answer: So when is the RIGHT time to switch?
At 30?
At 40?
At 50?
When you retire?
Seriously, you are an engineer because your father is one, PERIOD. No passion, no facination, no desire, just a JOB.
(That pays well...will feed your family, but not YOU)
I know a guy who is a qualified engineer. He has not worked in that feild for 14 years now. What does he do? He builds websites for a living. It is not about the dollars for him, it is about the FLEXABILITY that he desires in his life to do OTHER things.
Some would say that it is a waste. But ask him and he will GRIN at you and say...."I'm HAPPY"
I guess it comes down to what you REALLY want for YOUR life. To be HAPPY or to be seen to be RIGHT by others.
BTW, you can earn a good living as a psychologist *wink* ESPECIALLY if you go into it for the reasons that YOU STATE. (to help others) Other wise you will feel like you have EARNED every penny with HARD LABOUR. You see, if you do it because you LOVE IT then it is FUN. If you are in it for the MONEY then it is TEDIOUS.
Bottom line, it is YOUR LIFE. Who do you want to make the choices for you? YOU or someone else?

Answer: Hello,
I have been a sleep clinician for about 20 years**yipes! and you simply need to see a physician or sleep physician (they are called Diplomats of the ABSM *American Board of Sleep Medicine) as soon as possible to get some treatment. The only Board certification for sleep medicine is Diplomat, ABSM which means they have passed rigorous examinations and training in sleep disorders medicine as well as their other specialty medical boards (Pulmonology, Neurology etc). They will offer you options for treatment that will GREATLY improve your life. Once treated, you will be amazed at the changes you see in your daily life functioning levels. The tiredness goes away, you will lose weight, you will be able to sit in meetings without sleeping but it takes treatment.
The longer you have sleep apnea, the more damage it does to how you feel daily. Treatment options vary greatly but NCPAP *Nasal Continuous Positive Airway pressure* is one of the preferred methods for effecting treating sleep apnea. Its a small mask that you wear at night that provides an airway splint with air being pushed through nasal passages. Patients I have treated with it tell me that once they start it their lives are miraculously changed overnight. If that is the treatment your doctor suggests you should wear it every time you sleep (even when napping) and even take it with you for your occasion business or vacation trips.
If you get nasal stuffiness, simply call your physician and ask for a nasal steroid (nasal spray) that will alleviate the problem. Should you have other options research them carefully before opting for surgery. In many cases, nasal polyps or deviated septum require surgery (but NCPAP) can be used before and after this to assure you continue to feel better. There are some surgeries however, that have very low success rates and create whats called "silent snoring". That means you are still having apnea without all the sounds which can be dangerous as it doesn't alert you to arouse yourself during a period of sleep apnea which would terminate the apnea. Snoring with sleep apnea are alerts to the brain to arouse you to stop the sleep apnea episode.
I can reassure you if you get treatment, you WILL feel better. I know this a very difficult time in your life and very hard to deal with daily. You WILL get better with treatment and you WILL have so much improvement you will feel like a miracle has occurred.
I have enclosed some links that I hope help you learning about sleep apnea and treatment options.
