Managerial Position Career Guide and Counseling

Question: I was offered a managerial position at an import/export company but I want to start my own import business.? My question is, would accepting this offer be a valueable experience for me or a waste of time? I got mixed opinions from my friends. Some think I should just read some books, while others think the managerial position will pave the way for me. What do you think?

Answer: Absolutely! I'm a soft spoken person and do well in sales. The keys are to still make calls to introduce yourself (you don't have to have a strong personality as long as you're polite and sincere), learn to ask good questions, listen, stay organized and follow through/up. You will need to shine in the interview. I rely on coffee and chocolate to give me the boost I need for an interview :) I recommend checking out the classic SPIN Selling, which will give you some ideas on how to ask questions; I'd also check out salesguy.org, which has some pages of key sales traits (I don't think personality is even mentioned).

Question: How do I find a managerial position with no practical experience? I am a very recent MBA graduate who's been working in a corporate environment for over 10 years, but has never actually been in a leadership position. Will employers consider other elements into the hiring process? The concepts and theories are all very fresh in my mind. Answer: You`re going to find it harder and harder to find managerial positions . Companies have found long ago during hard times they can eliminate management positions and actually run MORE efficiently by offering experienced production personnel a working manager position where the employee works at his/her regular production job , and takes on many managerial responsibilities . The company can , for example , let 2 upper-level managers go and save perhaps $200,000/year in salaries . They can then add 5 working managers , and pay them their regular wages PLUS an extra $10,000.00 - $20,000.00/year or so ........ get increased production , and be ahead $100,000.00 to $150,000.00 at the same time . This concept has been used in countries such as Japan for many years now , and has been partially responsible in making Japan a world leader in manufacturing and other areas as well . China is another up and coming industrial nation that has embraced this idea to a large extent and realized it`s many advantages . Organizations that used to employ many managers have in a lot of instances cut down their high paid managerial staff to less than a handful with excellent results . It`s fast getting to the point where , in order to get a job as any kind of manager anywhere , you`re going to have to possess exceptional skills in many areas . In the next few years , management positions across North America will keep on being eliminated in favor of working managers . It`s not hard to understand why when you consider that management and most white collar workers are considered "dead weight" as far as a company`s bottom line ..............

Question: What would you do? Your husband is in a type of managerial position and a female coworker makes advances.? She constantly makes innapropriate comments amongst other things. I feel that I can't say anything to her because it would jepordize his position.

Answer: My husband is in the Army, and women have come onto him since almost day one. Most of them have been his subordinates. He has politely and firmly told them to back off. I, in turn, have done nothing at all except enjoy the entertaining stories he tells me about these women and their desperate attempts to snag him. Question: Help with preparing for a managerial position interview? I've work as an analyst for a bank for 3 years. I do oversee 4 other staff members, because of seniority, but with no official title. I just got notice that I will have an interview for the manager position at my department. How should I best prepare? What sort of questions will be asked? I of course will do more research, but I wanted to ask those on Y/A for help as well. Thank you.

Answer: Most of the questions will probably focus on your past performance, on your leadership skills, and on various scenarios that you have encountered. They may ask you things like...What was a difficult situation you had with an employee and how did you resolve it? How do you create a productive work environment? You want to be able to highlight the skills you possess (leadership, good role model, reliable, self-motivated) that make a good manager.

Question: L-1 visa - how to prove I have been employed by the US company subsidiary in a managerial position? Do I even have to prove it somehow or it is enough to just state it on the I-129 form? Is USCIS checking my employment and responsibilities with the branch abroad?

Answer: You need to show evidence that you have at least one continuous year of full-time employment abroad with a qualifying organization within the three years preceding the filing of the petition. The burden is on the petitioner to provide the documentation required to establish eligibility for L classification. The regulations do not require submission of extensive evidence of business relationships or of the alien's prior and proposed employment. In most cases, completion of the items on the petition and supplementary explanations by an authorized official of the petitioning company will suffice. In doubtful or marginal cases, the director may require other appropriate evidence which he or she deems necessary to establish eligibility in a particular case.
