Question: How can I advertise myself as a private English teacher for high school students? I'm a private English teacher, so I don't teach at schools. My problem is how to make students know about me and my skills as an English teacher. I'm sure I am better than most of them who teach at schools but they have much better opportunity than I do for private classes as students see them all the time at school. I want to know how I can advertise myself as an English teacher for high school student.
Answer: When I was a new teacher I got most tutoring jobs from the school I student taught at. The counselor at that school asked me for my information. Anytime that had a student who was struggling and the parent asked about tutors, they would give them my name and number.
I suggest getting some business cards and taking them to the counseling office of local schools. Many teacher do not do private tutoring because of other obligations. This would be a great way for you to get your name out.
A school newspaper would be a great way to run an ad, except most often the parents do not read the school newspapers. The kids never take it home.
A local newspaper may be a better way. I live in Ohio and at Ohio.com they have a spot where you can advertise online in the name of our local paper. I look there before I pour through the actual newspaper.
Be sure to spread it by word of mouth, too. Keep your cards on you. When you run into someone and want to call you... give them your card. I got a handful of jobs from that because people pass it on to others who they know need help.
Question: What does my english teacher mean by this question? My english teacher asks 'how does the author address each theme in Jane Eyre:"
What does she mean, what is she wanting me to tell her?
Answer: what she is saying is, "give me an example of where this is happening".
teachers always come up with new ways to say, "think", or "be specific", "give exampls" or "elaborate"
she is just saying that she wants you to explain what example , in the author's own way, was used to to emphasise what is being asked about.
Question: How much does a high school English teacher earn per year & what is the shortest route to become said teacher? I need to know what kind of pay do teachers make here in 2008... preferably in California, and what would be the quickest way to becoming a high school English teacher?
Answer: Depends on the district. Most will have a link to a salary schedule on their district web page somewhere.
Quickest route to being said teacher would be to get bachelor's degree with a teaching credential, then you could hopefully jump right into the school. HOWEVER, with the No Child Left Behind legislation, all teachers must be "highly qualified." This means that, if you don't have one, within your first three years of teaching you MUST obtain a Masters in Teaching/Education (of some kind), or a Masters in your subject area in order to be considered highly qualified.
What this means is that, while you can get into the schools faster by just getting your BA and a teaching credential, it is easier for you and the schools in the long run for you to get your BA, then try and find a Masters program so that you when you get your job, you're already highly qualified. Also, California is very hard up for teachers, so they are usually able to emergency certify teachers and give them time to get what they need. This does, of course, pay less. But still. Hope this helps!
Question: How to become an English teacher and novelist? Writing is my passion and I would love to be a successful writer. I know that just won't happen over night and I was considering becoming a high school english teacher as a carreer and write in my free time and doing the summer.

Question: How to write an apology to my english teacher because I cheated? I need to write an apology letter to my English teacher b/c I submitted other people writing and consider it as my own work, and my teacher found out. Please help me out and show me how to write an apology letter to my teacher asap!
Thank you very much
Answer: Wow. It's great that you feel like writing an apology (or are being pressured into it). You should keep it really simple.
Dear Teacher,
I know that you are aware that I submitted other people's work as my own. I feel awful about having plagiarized, because now I understand that in many ways, it was stealing other people's work. I have a great mind and I need to use it.
Please accept my apologies for having cheated on your assignment. I vow never to do it again.
Sincerely,
a penitent student
(your name here)
Seriously, you should have been able to have managed this yourself, but as a teacher, I'd like to hear you're sorry and you understand what you did. Best of luck to you.

Question: What English teacher leaving in USA would be available to spend one month teaching a foreigner adult student? The student needs to improve her English level especially the conversation skill at the business level. She will travel to take the classes where the teacher leaves. Her native language is Spanish.
Answer: Making an ad like this is first not allowed, and secondly, making it broad USA across is pretty wild putting it mildly since that covers a multitude of land space and people. Narrow your question and make it more presentable for this forum.

She doesn't speak a word of Arabic or Japanese.

Answer: The Japanese government has a "teach English in Japan" program. They are looking for people who are native speakers of English, with excellent written + spoken English skills, and a bachelor's degree. They do not require Japanese proficiency, but do require a willingness to study/learn Japanese.
If your friend qualifies, they should make contact with the nearest Japanese Embassy or Consulate to ask about the JET program: http://www.us.emb-japan.go.jp/JETProgram/homepage.html
Good luck!

Question: Can someone with a learning disability in math become an English teacher? I'm thinking of getting a BA in English and becoming an English teacher, but have been diagnosed with a learning disability in math. I live in the state of Florida and understand that there are certain tests you are required to take (some involving math) in order to become a certified teacher. I'm wondering if those can be waived if I'm specializing in English. Anyone know?
Answer: I'd definitely call the board of education or the people in charge of giving the test to find out your options. You never know until you get it from the horse's mouth. Especially if you have been diagnosed by a doctor. I'd also check into relocation, because I know that there are schools out there that are willing to work with people who could potentially be good teachers (and math usually has very little to do with English! I know, I'm an aspiring English teacher myself). Also, different states have different standards. However, the best advice I could give you would be to attack your learning disability head-on. Get a tutor, study for the test, get books at your local bookstore that give you helpful hints not only on the subject you need help on, but hints for test-taking as well. A learning disability is a challenge, not a show-stopper.
I'm really glad you're looking into becoming a teacher. It seems to me that you'd definitely be able to connect with students, esp. those who may have given up bc they disabilities of their own. Kudos on the noble career choice! *wink*
Question: What kind of extra ability you need if you want to be an english teacher? I've studied in university to be an english teacher since 8 moths ago.
I love to study english very much -English is not my first language-, but I do not want to be a teacher.
I just need to have another ability to make me more than regular english teacher, in the future.
But I do not know what kind of ability I need to learn.
Any idea?
Answer: Do you want to be a teacher or not? I think this is the most important thing you need to figure out. I would suggest substitute teaching for a while to get the feel for the classroom.
Once you figure out that you DO want to to teach -- because you like the feeling of the classroom and the work that teachers do -- then you have to figure out if you truly love literature, writing, grammar, etc.
After this, it's just a matter of how hard you are willing to work at it. You can learn the literature as you go and practice writing and teaching techniques along the way. It's probably going to take a while to get certified to teach English, and most schools require certification now.
Just to let you know, I'm a sophomore English teacher in Texas, and love for English is just one of the components that keeps me coming back to teaching year after year.
