Question: How do I become an ESL teacher in New York City? I've been a volunteer ESL teacher for two organizations already. What's the fastest route to becoming a paid ESL teacher in NYS? What are the minimum requirements to teach? Where should I take courses? I scoured the internet for information already but I can't seem to find a clear answer.
Thanks so much for your help!
Answer: Contact the New York City Department of Education.
You can get information here http://schools.nyc.gov/Careers/default.h…
Question: How much would you get paid for an ESL teacher in China? I am planning to migrate in China and work as an ESL English teacher. Does anyone knows the bracket of the pay. I'm from the Philippines and have almost 15 years of teaching experience from grade school to high school to college. ESL teacher for grade school is what am looking for.
i got my bachelors, huludao is the place i am being recruited for grade school kids, any rate for for my teaching since this is a province please help want to have idea of how much i would get payed? thank you.
Answer: 3,000 to 5,500 yuan per month (for 10 - 16 hours) in most state education institutions depending on whether you have a Bachelors degree, Masters degree or Doctors degree.
You can earn more in foreign language universities and private schools but would have to work longer hours.
Also earn more in Bejing Shanghai etc.
Edit (in response to Tom Carters posting)
I am teaching in a Key National University within 150 km of Beijing and with a Bachelors degree (2.1Honours) and a TEFL certificate I am on 3,500RMB per month (12 hours per week - in essence about 10) the same as I was on last year at another university 100km away (where the max I did was 16 hours pw and the min 8 hours pw). I have been teaching in China since 2000.
At my previous university there was a very experienced lady with a Masters degree and she was on 4,000RMB pm, there was also a young American teacher straight from graduation who was on 3000RMB pm. The average (but some pay more) is 3,500 for a Bachelors degree. Some accept teachers without a degree where you could expect 3,000RMB per month. An American at our other campus with a Doctors degree was on 5,500 RMB per month. A female teacher once employed at the Law College next door was on 6,500 RMB pm and was informed she was on more than the president of the uni (4 years ago).
AND yes there is free acccommodation on top of that, but pay for your own food, but plus a travelling allowance at the end of each completed semester 1100 to 1750 rmb plus normally one way travel allowance to your original home for one semester and two-way travel allowance for one year (two semesters teaching).
As I said previously, a doctors degree will pay you more and working in a private school or uni or foreign language university will pay more. Also as I said previously you can earn more in Shanghai and Beijing (you need to because of cost of living higher) but it won't be much more in a state uni because they are providing free living (that also includes your electric - and gas if used). Telephone, except for internal calls, you pay youself - best to have a mobile (cell-phone) they are quite reasonable.
Good Luck and I am sure you will love China as much as I do.
BTW I teach semesters of teaching - my son does gigs with his band in the UK (and further afield)
Question: Is it illegal for an ESL teacher to teach private lessons in Korea? Is it illegal for an ESL teacher to teach private lessons in Korea?
I've heard that there are some schools that will allow you to teach private lessons. Is this true? If so, do many schools allow this or is it just a few?
Answer: If you're here on an E-2 visa, then it's illegal, whether schools allow it or not. Officials are very strict regarding this law, and if caught you will be deported. I have an F-2 visa (because I'm married to a Korean), which made me eligible to teach private lessons, but I was still required to get a license through the Department of Education before I could start teaching legally.
Question: How to become an ESL teacher and how many years do I have to go to college? I actually had a sudden revelation on wanting to become a ESL teacher, because I'm already fluent in Spanish and English, but I want to know how exactly one goes about it...Mostly how many years do I have to stay in college?
Answer: It takes 4 years.
Question: What classes do i need to take in college become ESL teacher? To become a middle school ESL teacher, what classes should i take in college, and how long would it take me to graduate?
Answer: Just get an English degree and a single subject teaching credential. You can do it in three years if you hustle, but most likely four. By that time, however, ESL will probably be built into every teaching credential anyway, because of all the illegal aliens who come here for free education. Are you sure you want to be a teacher? It really sucks. I've been doing it for 13 years in southern California and the conditions just keep getting worse and worse.
Question: How (BESIDES AS AN ESL TEACHER) would you structure a one-day-a-week English teaching position? How (BESIDES AS AN ESL TEACHER) would you structure a one-day-a-week English teaching position? I need to work either 2 mornings or one full day a week. I have no idea how my school would do this, but I thought I'd float it out there, in case you work p-t or know anyone p-t with this schedule. Thanks!
Answer: I am not sure what you mean by "besides as an ESL Teacher", unless you want to teach something other than English, which doesn't seem to be the case, so that line is confusing.
My set up is probably similar to what you want. I teach two "evenings" a week. I have a total of five classes, two on the first night, three on the second. I have no repeat students in a week's period. Each class is completely independent on its particular needs, since they are broken down into abilities more so than age.
I teach what the class needs, with some guidance from the school, but I am mostly left on my own to teach my way and my particular lessons. Now, in my case, all students are indeed ESL students so if you mean by your original statement that you want to teach English to students in a school setting but they already speak English as a basic language, then, yes, your school will need to determine how best you can fit into their program. Good luck.
Question: If you are an ESL teacher in South Korea how much do you charge for private lessons? Outside the classroom if I am approached by a parent should I charge 20,000 won an hour for private lessons. If you are an ESL teacher was is a good price range to charge? I plan on making some money there so any suggestions would be great.
Answer: It really depends on your experience if you have a teaching degree you can charge more, usually when college students go to korea for vacation and do tutoring on the side they charge about 30,000-35,000 won. Hope this helps.
Question: How to become an ESL teacher? I would like to know everything that i would need to become and ESL teacher I mean everything also if there is a web sute even better... Im currently going to college getting the basics i would like to know step by step evrything i would nedd and also recommendations? And what's the average salary? Thanks!
Answer: I don't know too much about becoming an ESL teacher, but since you said you're in college you might want to check and see if your school has any volunteer opportunities so you can have a ahnds on experience that will help you out. A lot of schools will even give you credit for those kinds of programs.
Good luck!
Question: how do i become an ESL teacher in Illinois? I want to be an ESL teacher in Illinois, but all the teacher accredited colleges/universities that i want to attend do not offer the program for an undergraduate degree.
if i double major in secondary ed and biology for undergrad and go to Wheaton Collge for a TESOL certificate, will that enable me to teach ESL? on the website, it says that the TESOL certificate is teacher accredited......
or is it better to go to a collge/university that i'm not really interested in that offers ESL programs for undergrad so that i can do what i wnat to do faster? help?
i'm not in a hurry to get a job, i can take my time. actually, im applying to the Golden Apple Scholars Program which requires me to teach for five years and a needy schools within eight years of graducating. I guess that does give me time to get the certificate b/c it only takes a year.....
is there even such a thing as ESL biology? what should i do?
Answer: I have held an Illinois transitional bilingual certificate ... Springfield, Illinois 62777-0001. REQUEST FOR APPROVAL. AS A BILINGUAL OR ESL TEACHER ! ...www.isbe.net/certification/pdf/73-49_… - 80k - View as html - More from this site
It's called Google. You can use it; I have confidence in you.
Do you have an academic adviser at your college? Wheaton is in Illinois, right? It seems like they would have more accurate requirements at their fingertips.
Question: What courses do I need to take to become a ESL teacher? I,m still in high school, but i,m thinking to become a ESL (english is second language.)teacher.And actually , I am a ESL student,I live in CA,So I hope someone could share their experience with me, and tell me what course i need to take .thanks!
Answer: Best bet is to talk to your high school guidance counselor and/or the guidance department at the college you are considering attending. You can also check with your state's department of education. Not all states/school districts/schools have separate ESOL certifications. In my district all teachers that deal with second language learners are expected to have their ESOL endorsement...300 hours of instruction in ESOL strategies if they are regular classroom teachers, and the universities are incorporating these hours into their coursework. Out of state teachers coming into the state are expected to take the 5 courses in order to keep their positions.
