Question: what is the job of a corporate trainer? How do you become one? I want to work as a corporate trainer.
Answer: The training function is usually housed with the human resources or personnel department. Trainers work with different areas of the organization to assess the skills that are required to enable the org to succeed. Training can include basic skills like customer service, computer skills, and the like. A very important part of training is in legal requirements such as the Sarbanes-Oxley federal reporting requirements, food safety, occupational safety and health, and lots of other areas. This training saves the company money as when people do their jobs within the law, there are fewer fines and lawsuits.
If you are in school, an HR major would be best; many trainers have masters' degree in organizational development or HR, although you can start with a BA in an entry level position and work your way up.
Jobs within the training department include: curriculum designers, platform trainers (get up in front of groups), support people to develop presentations and track training software needs, quality control people to make sure the training is working as planned, and higher-level strategic executives to work with senior management on aligning training objectives with overall company goals.
It's a great field, but in recessions there are usually a lot of layoffs, particularly in the financial services industry. But, once in the field you are very employable.

Question: Is corporate trainer a long-term career prospect? I am considering becoming a corporate trainer with a famous US food and beverages company.
I have diverse experience providing training, teaching at schools, working in HR dept and have a psychology degree.
I am very excited about the job scope. The job provides adequate challenges, traveling opportunities (which I really like), meeting with diverse people, and so on. This is basically the first job prospect I'm feeling excited about, after sending out thousands of resumes and attending a few interviews.
The concern I have is what can be my career path? Of course, since this is an established multinational company, I plan to stay on for 30-50 years.
But in the event that the company closes down, or if we have another financial meltdown, a merger or whatever, what can my career options be?
Can I become a Training & Dev Mgr if I choose to leave corporate training? Move into another industry and be a corporate trainer in that industry? Any corporate trainers out there?
Answer: A recent workforce study found that companies spend an average of $1900 per employee for professional development (training). Thats not including training/orientation for new hires, etc. Some have in-house training staff, others out-source (thus providing employment oppertunities in a training business or even freelance). If you wind up becoming a trainer in a specific industry it makes you even more marketable, but a good trainer can "train" on most subjects with just a little homework. I have seen some Training Managers and Directors -- even VP of Training jobs that pay in the 6-figures. The higher the pay, the more the travel requirements are. Keep in mind travel gets old when you ALWAYS have to do it. Corporate training is considered a growing field. That said, a close friend of mine is a trainer in Georgia and has been looking for an executive-level position in corporate training in the South for 2 years with no avail (and his credentials are solid). The high-dollar jobs tend to be offered to internal candidates either as a promotion from within the training deparment or people who become trainers after working in the company for some time so they can lend their experience. This is good if you are in with a company you want to stay with, tough when you are trying to break in. I hope this helps paint you a better picture. Good Luck!
Question: Do you need any qualifications to be a corporate trainer or motivator? I have a friend who works for corporate training company and he says they hire actors and models to do these jobs. I'm no actor or model but I am very intelligent and am easy on the eyes.
Answer: We require at least 5 years' experience in the field desired, as well as a proven success record in order to become a trainer for our company. As for a motivational speaker, you should be very adept at speaking in front of large groups, and should love to help others share your enthusiasm. Your work history will have a lot to do with how easy it is for you to be booked by groups and companies who want to make their staffs more energetic. If you are a rookie at your trade you have no credibility. If you have 60 months' experience, you have the knowledge and skills to know how the job is really done, and what the rules are to keep it legal. Answer: What a cool career choice! Interal trainers at companies usually work under the HR function: Training and Development. It does require a degree and even at times, a teaching certificate. Check out their association: American Society for Training and Development - I'm sure they'll provide you with the info. you are looking for.
Question: When starting out as a Corporate Trainer/Speaker, Does giving Free workshops help or hurt my corporate image? I've been giving free lectures to local non-profit organizations. Does this mean that other companies will try to book me for free also? Or is it seen as good PR to promote my Books, Audio CDs & seminars?
Answer: It's a good move in marketing yourself. Unless you're marketing the lectures as free, no one needs to know that they are. If you are, play it up as an altruistic move but in a sheepish way if asked saying that you like to give back to the community. Playing up the free lectures can also give you pull with larger companies because it gives them the idea that what you have to say is more worthwhile - and, you know, PR is all about image and what people think they see. If you have books it's ABSOLUTELY a good plan to use the lectures as a marketing tool. Take hold of every chance you can to promote yourself.
Question: I'm a teacher. I'd like information on becoming a corporate trainer.? I'm ready to transition from education to the business world as a corporate trainer. Anyone know of any way to break into this area of employment? Websites would be appreciated. Also, basic pay scale information would help. I am willing to relocate.
Answer: The corporate trainer at my company was formerly an elementary teacher. All she did was apply when she heard of the opening. Just send out 200 resumes to various companies wether or not they have an opeing....and you will land a job. That always works and I am very skilled in this area so take that piece of advice...it works!.

Answer: Yes, you should get well versed in giving online demonstrations. You might be asked if you have used tools like Webex or Microsoft Live Meeting. You may want to take a look at both these products in regards to giving online training meetings.

I truely enjoy teaching, but have been seeing my opportunities to actually present material, and over training classes decreasing. I am considering a career change into teaching. I live in TX and it seems there are a lot of pre-reqs to get into the teaching field. However, I have heard stories of folks teaching w/out their certificates, and the school systems giving them a year or so to earn their cert while they teach. Can any one offer advice, or does anyone know the "real" steps I should take to become I teacher in Texas (DFW area).

Answer: First make sure you know your corporations personality, second use group dynamic theory that pertains to YOUR company. What works in some companies will fall flat. Honor your employees knowledge and differences in experience and knowledge. You are not the sage on the stage with all the answers, you are the guide on the side helping them help themselves. Employees resent someone telling them how to do their job, instead help them find ways to do their job better. The worst corporate trainers think of themselves as lecturers or teachers. The best are colleagues.
