Question: I just enlisted in the Navy Nuke program. Can any Nuke Alumni or prior service give me a clue what I'm in for? Although its too late for second thoughts, I'm still interested in getting as much info as possible from people who have experienced it first hand ( My recruiter wasn't much of a help and the Nuke recruiter's job is to get e to join the program).
Answer: How far into the nuke 'pipeline' are you? pre-boot camp? A school?
It has changed since I went through but I've kept abreast of the changes and work with many who have been through recently. What rating are you? EM, MM, or ET? Are you submarine volunteered?
First you will learn your rating. That school can last from two months for MMs to 6 months for ETs. Nuclear Power School is 6 months of classroom going from basic algebra to pre-calculus, classical physics to quantum mechanics, inorganic chemistry, materials (metallurgy), radiological controls, reactor principles, and heat transfer & fluid flow (thermodynamics). Next comes Prototype where you actually start applying what you've learned over the previous year to year-and-a-half on a real operational nuclear propulsion system.
Next comes the fleet. Surface fleet will be on an aircraft carrier, and submarine fleet will be on a fast attack, Trident missile boat, or a guided missile boat.

Question: This is for Harvard/Princeton/Yale students or alumni out there? What were SAT score/GPA/extracurriculars/class rank/community service hours/participation in high school clubs like? I want go to one of those schools one day and I want to see what I need to achieve in high school to be able to make my dream come true. The more information the better! Thanks!
Answer: Hello there, I'm not in any of those schools, yet.. I'm actually hoping to be admitted to Dartmouth, Georgetown, or Yale this coming spring, so i'm in the same game as you are!
First of all, you need to know what each university's admissions officers are looking for. Harvard and Princeton are kind of the conservative schools, meaning that hard scores seem to count more, while at Yale and Dartmouth, although admissions do dwell on GPA, a more well rounded lifestyle in clubs, sports, art, music, and some kind of leadership is what they really look for. They want the strange, different people that'll have, as Ray Bradbury once wrote, "Zest, and Gusto!"
For myself as an example, since I've been out of high school for 3 years, I'm going to rely on my Greenpeace training program, political activism, volunteer work, and upcoming political internships. I still have to find an orchestra and sport to commit to, but that'll hopefully provide some kind of well rounded model for the people who look at my transcripts and read my essays. I've still got to do SAT II's though, luckily only 2 are required..
Since you're in high school, I'd say grades, SAT's, and AP's will be the first focus, and definitely do community service all the time. In fact, you may want to plan to volunteer overseas somewhere, and tell the person that during your intereview.. That'll give you a huge plus.. Make sure you also get involved in politics for this year if it's your last, they'll really be happy with that. Make sure you sound like you really have a cause to be there, within your activities, essays, and interview. It's a lot of work, but worth it, I've got friends over at Harvard, Yale, Brown, UPenn, Columbia, Cornell, and they all are having a blast. Anyway, email me sometime, and we'll collaborate with each other and try to strengthen our approach. Cheers,

Question: What are my chances of being accepted into Boston College? I have a 3.6 GPA and I go to a Jesuit high school. I am an Eagle Scout, Key Club, Varsity Track, Varsity Rugby, Eucharistic Minister, and a lot of service. My dad is an alumnus so there's some legacy and I know the former assistant basketball coach for Boston College. Will I be accepted into BC.
Answer: I agree that a lot will depend on your SAT scores as your GPA is borderline. If your SATs are below 2000, I suggest applying to SAT optional Holy Cross which is a small version of BC with only 3000 students versus 9000 at BC. Both Holy Cross and BC are run by the Jesuits and they are only 30 miles apart so they are quite similar schools in philosophy and academically. BC is ranked #34 on national universities rankings and HC is #35 for liberal arts colleges per US News.
Question: University Alumni Tours? Question Details: I work for a tour operator and want to reach out to the educational institute (Alumni, college tours, study programs, musuem ) to market our service and arrange tours for these insitutions. Can someone give me advice on how I may start? Which department I should contact? Can I attend some trade shows? What are some good ideas and approaches? I am not familiar with this field, so would really appreciate your professional suggestions. Or do any companies provide such service? We know how to prepare great proposals, but don't know 'WHO' to send these to, and 'WHERE' do we meet the person in charge of the travel arrangement at these instituions. Please help me brainstorm and give me your ideas. What would be a practical way to start? If you can offer very good step by step guidances, or even have experience dealing with this, I would even consider hiring you on this. Thank you very much!
Answer: I would suggest that you contact the Alumni Association first and foremost. When I graduated, my university's Alum Assoc. offered a tour of Europe and all of the information was circulated by the Association, not a third party. If you got in touch with the Alumni Association, they would be able to give you an idea of what their grads would be interested in, and they might place advertisements for you in the alumni newsletters or something. Good luck!
Question: What are my chances of getting accepted into temple as a transfer student? I am thinking about possibly transferring to Temple in the fall. I have a 3.1 GPA and have been involved wit several community service projects. If you are a current student or alumni would you please give me an honest opinion on what you think.
Answer: Your chances are pretty good. The problem with transferring isn't getting in, it's getting your credits to transfer. Fight for every unit to be transferred. You already paid for the class somewhere else, don't let a transfer evaluation leave you with only half of your units transferring because that just means you have to pay more to take more classes. If you have only attended somewhere else a year or two, your classes are probably the basic ones and they usually transfer if you attended an accredited school.
Question: What are my chances of being accepted to American University? This is the college that I really want to attend. I have been inducted into the National Honor Society and have performed over 100 hours of community service. I have also been involved in dance for 10 yeras and won medals. I have been involved for SADD for 2 years and have taken honors courses. Next year I will be a senior and will be aking two A.P. courses. I have also been trying to up the leadership and was editor of the yearbook and a journalist on my school paper. I am also on the board of directors for Key Club and Commitee Chairman. I am an alumni to the NYLF on defense, intelligence and diplomacy, the JSA election decision 2006, and the JSA symposium on leadership and politics. I also attended the Yale summer school and will be attending Georgetown summer school this summer. I am a delegate to the Buckeye Girls state where I will be campaigning for judge. I am in the top 10 percent o fmy class with a 4.0 gpa and just took the ACT for the first time and got a 24.
I am also looking into Georgetown and George Washington. I would really like to know could someone answer?
Answer: preety good
Question: What to wear to our alumni dinner on a budget? DH and I will be attending an alumni dinner in three weeks for
the college he graduated from and I formerly attended. It will be in the Dallas/Fort Worth area at an upper-scale Mexican grill. Having only seen our alums during formal events on campus, I have no idea what to wear to this dinner, and would like to spend as little money as possible. I am 23.
I already have:
1. Green paisley v-neck dress with fluttery sleeves. Looks very nice on me, but needs something, like a belt. What belt styles are in for this spring? Length needs heels; what type of heeled sandals?
2. Black pencil skirt and cute heels, but no spring/summer tops to go with it.
3. A tan, almost tweed-looking cotton suit. It is more of a fall style. Do not have appropriate shoes to go with it.
Things I could get:
1. Assuming they have one in my size, the Career Services Office at my university gives away free suits for interviews.
Your suggestions will be welcome. Thanks!
Answer: Some tops for the skirt or suit:

A belt:

Shoes:

I suggest the skirt with a flowy, summery shirt and heels. Looks professional and pretty at the same time.
Question: email received thro mail forwarding service - cannot configure Outlook to receive it? I use a mail forwarding alumni service - www.cantab.net - to receive emails that are forwarded to my Yahoo inbox. My email address with Cantab is M.A.B.MacSeoinin.02@cantab.net; I am able to use it interchangeably with my Yahoo email address. However, when I try to configure Microsoft Outlook to send and receive messages, there appears to be a conflict between the two email identifiers, so that I consistently receive the usual error message (cannot find server, check passwords etcetera).
Answer: If you have firewall this is probably stopping it
Question: How do I get accpeted to Harvard? My grandfather is a Harvard alumni, he served on the Harvard Admissions Board, was on the boxing team, and was a member of the Phillips Brooks House Association, which is Harvard's public service organization.
My problem is that I am typically an A and B student, but have gotten several C+'s before and they were mostly in my math courses. I am strong in history, science, and English, but am weak in math.
I know that I most likely will not get accepted to Harvard right after high school, so I am planning on going to a smaller college first.
Answer: How many times are you going to ask this? Do you think that our answers will change?
Harvard wants people who can learn -- and you are not showing that you can.
Question: what are my chances of being accepted to a good college? I think that I have some pretty good stats. I am in the top ten percent of my class and I have been an avid member of Key Club. I have ove 100 hours of community service and was the chairman of my committee and on board of directors. I was also the ditor of the Peoples section in our yearbook and have participated in SADD for 2 years I have dancerd for 3 years. I am a straight A student with a 4.0 GPA and took the ACT for the first time and got a 24. I am also an alumni to the NYLF on defense intelligence and diplomacy and the JSA Symposium on Leadership and Politics and the JSA election decision 2006 conference. I also attened Yale Summer School.
I have also been inducted in to the NAtional Honor Society and am a delegate to the Buckeye Girl's State I am also attending Geotgetown Summer School in the Summer. It says that I have been doing dance for 3 yeras but it was a typo. I have been doing dance for ten years. I have won a gold and silver medal at impact and footloose dance competitions. I am only a junior and have not taken any AP classes. Next year I am taking AP U.S. History and A.P. Literature. I am currently taking Honors english and advanced Math.
Answer: It depends on your definition of a "good college". If you are talking about getting into Harvard, the honest answer is that you would have a hard time getting in. However, there are lots of schools that would be very excited to get a student like you. One thing that colleges do take into consideration is the high school that you attend. I used to work in admissions and see students in the top 10 percent of their class with a C- average. However, since you're in the top 10 percent with a 4.0, my guess is that you are at a good school. Another thing that is taken into consideration is the type of classes that you have taken. Did you get straight As in AP classes, or were they just the general classes. Also, have you taken four years of science, math, and english? For a lot of "good" schools, if you have not done that, you are much less likely to get accepted.
