Question: Why is it important for a process plant operator to know the ideal gas laws?
Answer: Process Plant? Not sure what that is but...I assume there are valves and pipes involved. And someone does maintenance on that equipment and someone operates those valves...
When a valve is opened or closed and when maintenance is planned for and completed, a result is expected...
You need to understand the laws governing gas properties, like temperature and pressure, so that you can look at a pressure gage before opening a valve, or before telling someone to open a valve, and know what to expect the gage to read after the task is accomplished...
Believe me when I tell you that every plant accident that has ever happened in the world could have been avoided if the operators simply put more thought into what they were doing..."The gage reads this...after I open this valve it should go down, or up" as the case may be. And when they actually open the valve, if the response of the gage is something other than was expected, shutting the valve and figuring out why is important...it saves money, it saves equipment and it saves lives.
Someone hired you to work at the plant. They pay you money. They do that because they want to earn money. When equipment and processes are not performing the way they were designed, the company loses money. When valves and pipes are not configured as they were designed, things can break. When too many mis configurations happen at one time, pressures and temperature buildup in ways that no one can anticipate and the first sign of disaster is usually some small gage, rarely given the proper attention. But that first sign, if ignored, is the first alarm that somethings gotta give. And if ignored has, in so many cases, led to someone getting hurt or worse.
So, whoever is asking you to understand the principles of gas mechanics knows what they're doing. But even understanding the laws in your head and on paper doesn't help in a factory environment unless you anticipate a result of the operator's actions and then ask if the expected result was achieved. And if not, having the balls to raise your hand and find out why.

Question: how many years of college must you attend to be a cchemichal plant operator?
Answer: None. I believe a high school diploma is required, but not college. Most operators at our plant do not have college degrees. However, you must go through quite a bit of industry- and company-specific training. The company for whom I work trains the incoming operators, though. They go through a 60-day program -- classwork and hands-on. It's pretty tough, but the company pays them while they are training. They are also all union members, so they are paid well, too.
