Line Technician Career Guide and Counseling

Question: Are there any on-line Harley repair technician schools I can participate in to become certified? I am interested in becoming a certified Harley Davidson repair technician with hopes of opening my own shop in my area. Are there any online courses that I can enroll in to get my certificate through an online educational class.

Answer: Ask yourself this; Would you let someone that has only completed an on line training course and had no hands on training or experiance work on your bike? Nope. As for opening your own shop, if your interest lies in being a genuine Harley wrech, you have to be a Harley dealer. Look around, the days of the low buck dealership in general, much less a Harley franchise, are loooong gone. Not having first hand experiance with "The Motor Company" I can't accurately address what they require. But 1.5 million ain't even close. Honda requires 1 million in liquid assets be set aside in an escrow account before they will even begin negotiations with a prospective new dealer. Add in building costs, special tools, signs, required parts on hand, etc, etc and you can easily get up to another million and you still don't have your bikes floor planned or your doors open! Wrenches don't own dealerships anymore. Plus we haven't even addressed the fact that just because you want a delaership in your area a franchise might not be available there. As a frnachised dealership owner you'll find that the manufacturer is holding all the cards and dealing them... You could go the MMI, AMI, local community college route and become familiar with any brand of your choice. But in my experiances hiring and dealing with mechanics these guys come out of school not as first class tech's, but more like good assembly guys that are ready to begin hands on training in the field. Most don't last two years. Only the truely passionate about what they do hang in there to become the guy we all want to have our bikes worked on by. Don't give up your dream, just understand that in todays marketplace there isn't much room for the mechanic/shop owner. The climate in the industry today requires that the business owner be a true businessman, and that usually doesn't leave time for spinning wreches.

Question: I am hard of hearing and want a line technician job at a small airport.? my problem is i cannot understand a thing on a cb what can i do about it? i wear a digital hearing aid. Is there any technology that i could wear to help me understand someone speaking in the cb? it is all garble talk. thanks

Answer: Are you sure that understanding a CB is a requirement of the position? That would be the first thing I would as the HR dept / recruiter at the airport. Question: Is it worth taking an on line course for Pharmacy or Vet Technician? My time is limited away from home so an online course would be best suited for me. I was thinking of doing something with Pharmacy technician or Vet Tech. Is it worthy of spending the money on these online programs? Will it help you secure a job or do most places train on the job? Answer: I don't give any value to online programs. All that pharmacists care about is if you are certified. That is the big deal. Pharm Tech does not pay well, you'll be lucky to make $13 per hour with several years of experience.

Question: Are there any on line schools where you can study to become a radiology technician? I have no medical training previously and wonder if this is a field you can study on line?

Answer: You can take the program prerequisite courses online, but because this type of program requires clinical hours, you would have to attend a Rad Tech program in order to meet the clinical requirements. Make sure, though, that your online courses are through an accredited college or university...otherwise you will waste a lot of time and money.

Answer: Considering that most responsible hiring managers will interview multiple qualified people for the same position, it's definitely possible to interview without getting the position. It sounds like you have the basic qualifications that they need. Your downfall may be the lack of direct experience, especially if another candidate more closely is qualified for the position. However, the fact that they have interviewed you is definitely a positive. It means that they also see on your resume that you have skills they are interested in.

Answer: 2nd line has advanced skills. 1st line is the immediate contact with customer. If the problem is above the skill level of 1st line it goes to 2nd line. 2nd line knows the skills of 1st and 2nd line and can provide coverage in both areas. Pay is more for 2nd line.

Answer: Certified nail technicians are licensed to provide manicures, pedicures, coloring, and extensions. With all the advances in artificial nail products and the chemistry of nails that are needed. You do need to attend to some kind of college or Prep School for that specific career, depending on the college it can take a minimum of six months or up to 1-2 years. To get the nail technician certification you usually need a certain amount of hours on the job without a pay- the hours depend on the state that you are living in. Question: Pharmacy Technician on-line classes? Im interested in possibly doing an online course to get pharmacy technician certified. Do you have any recommendations on which online college to go through, and the pros and cons? I would also like to know an estimate as far as costs, and about how long the course will be. Thanks

Answer: I would say to not waste your time. Many pharmacies like Wal-Greens, Rite-Aid, etc. will do on the job training. Additionally, pharmacy technicians, on average, only make about $9/hour, which is $3 less an hour than I make working at a coffee shop, which is sad for the medical field. That said, if you chose to go that direction, make sure that the online courses you would be taking are from an accredited school. When classes are taken at technical/community colleges, it takes about 2 years to complete with pre-requistes that include Anatomy and Physiology, math, speech, and English.
