Question: A geologist found a layer of sedimentary rock that had formed in the ocean while studying a mountain ran? A geologist found a layer of sedimentary rock that had formed in the ocean while studying a mountain range. Hypothesize how this is possible.
Answer: The sediments were originally deposited on ocean floor and undergone a process called diagenesis which turned the sediments into sedimentary rocks. Because tectonic forces the sedimentary rocks are then uplifted to form mountains. That's how the marine sedimentary rocks can be found on mountains.
Question: What pros and cons are there in becoming a geologist? Please give me the pros for becoming a geologist, as well as the cons. I am trying to decide what career to follow and I want to know what the pros and cons are for becoming a geologist.
Thanks for the help in advance!
Answer: For the most part, you'll have to deal with rocks, minerals, fossils, etc. and study them - it may be under a microscope or you'll use different chemicals which can affect your health. You'll do a lot of evaluations and keep a lot of samples. And the tools you need to use in field work are really really expensive (for professional use).
But on the bright side, you'll get to do a lot of field work which involves going to places all over the world! My professor in geology have been to many places around the world, and when he tells a story about his field work, it seems really fun. Plus, you'll have knowledge about rocks and minerals that an average person wouldn't know. You'll feel proud when you speak of your field works.
Hope this helps.

Question: If you were a geologist, would you prefer to study contact metamorphosis or regional metamorphosis to gain clu If you were a geologist, would you prefer to study contact metamorphosis or regional metamorphosis to gain clues on what happens beneath the Earth's surface? Explain your answer.
Answer: Regional metamorphism. Contact metamorphism is confined to relatively small areas near the Earth's surface. Regional metamorphism has much more variablity in pressure and temperature whereas contact metamorphism is confined to low pressures.
Question: Does anyone know an overweight or fat person that is a Geologist or Geology major? I heard geologist are scientist that require to stay fit and in shape. Since their career/job require them to be in the field to study the geological processes of the world, I was wondering if fat Geologist exist. Anyone know a Geologist who is obese or overweight?
Answer: My dad is a geologist and trust me, there are a lot of overweight geologists!! When my mum and I go up to camp she makes the girls lose pounds by doing aerobics!! Funnily enough, my dad is very fit...but he seems to be a rarity!! A lot of the geologists when they are out on site dont have much to do the evening so they end up drinking and canteen food isn't destined for health or weight conscious people. One of the funniest geologist I know is massive - tall and huge!!
Question: What does a forensic geologist study and where do they collect their samples? I have a few questions about forensics....
a)
What is the main way forensic geologists identify soil? What determines the soil's special characteristic?
b) How are diatoms used to solve burglary crimes?
c) What does a forensic geologist study and where do they collect their samples?
I neeed this questions ASAP....Plzzzz Thankk uuu
Answer: a)
Density - different minerals (may contain in soil) have different density and density of the soil
Minerals - observe under microscope can determine the optical characteristics of its
pH value (acid & base) - depends on the location
Color - compare between dry soil
Insect - certain insect is only found in a specific area
Plant/seed - same as above
... and more
b)
Diatoms can be easily individualized, hard to give an example specifically for a burglary crimes, but solving a crime is all about linking one thing to another.
c) I assume, rocks, minerals, soils, plants...
Question: How many geologist have penetrated into Earth and how far? What are the geologist names?
Answer: Mate I dug a 6 foot deep trench on sunday, straight into the earth. I have a bloody sore back now.
Question: What courses do you need to become a geologist? I am looking for post-secondary programs & high school prerequisites that you would need to become a geologist. Possibly major courses you need and the general courses that colleges and/or Universities accept for you to become a Geologist.
Answer: In high school take all the math and science you can. In college you will have to take all the core or general ed courses required for your degree along with lots of geology (mineralogy, petrology, paleontology, geophysics, for example) along with many other science disciplines and math. Plan on pursuing at least a Master's degree if you want to find a good job in this field. Check out college websites to find specific class requirements. Most schools have such websites these days.
Question: What's the best way to explain to my family what a geologist does? Everytime I bring it up... I get asked if I'm going to be like Indiana Jones (who's not a geologist). I guess they don't see the allure about looking at rocks all day.
Answer: Instead of telling them that geologists study rocks, minerals, tell them that they study the earth which enables them to discover oil, gas, all metals such as iron, copper, gold, gems such as diamonds, sources of ground water, etc.

Answer: If you might want to go to Germany, the biggest and more or less monopolist company in coal mining has its headquarters in the city of Essen. Name of the company is Ruhrkohle AG.
They for sure have activities also in the USA. I recommend to contact them by internet and find out if they offer some type of exchange program for employees or students between their operations in different countries.
Question: Are you or have you ever been a Geologist working for an environmental consulting firm? Do you like it? Are you or have you ever been a Geologist working for an environmental consulting firm? Do you like it?
I am a geology student and have noticed many job oportunities for geologiest with environmental consulting firms. I know the pay can be good but is the job enjoyable? Was it your first pick? Do you feel good about your work at the end of the day? Just curious.
Answer: I am not working for a consulting firm, but I am a geology student working for the department of transportation in the environmental section. I have noticed that consulting firms are very needy when it comes to geologists. There is definitely a shortage, so the firms will do almost anything to make you happy and make you want to work there. All the consulting firms I've been in contact with are in the process of raising their wages in order to make geologists more attracted to their firms. They usually only have 1 geologist so the work is very independent. I think it would be satisfying to know how essential you are to the firm.
Hope this helps!

Question: How many years does it take to become a "Petroleum Geologist"? I am going to college and I was wondering how many years it would take to finish the Petroleum Geologist Major..Thanks
Answer: I've been a petroleum geologist for >30years. Most if not all people entering the oil business these days have at least a masters degree in geology or geophysics - preferably from a university noted for its petroleum geology/geophysics like Texas, Texas A&M, U of Oklahoma, LSU, Colorado School of Mines and many others. A BS degree is about 4 years and if you are a fast track and ambitious you can get your masters is 2 years (because I did it). Starting salaries are ~70-80k/year.
Question: Is there still need for mineral exploration Geologist? Is there still need for mineral exploration Geologist? I want to find precious minerals for a living. Is there still enough demand to isolate my Geology major to just that, and what would that major be called?
Answer: We are using precious metals (Au, Ag, + Pt) faster than ever. If we are going to be able to supply that demand into the future, then we will have to find new orebodies through exploration to replace the current mines that will eventually be depleted. An exploration geologist skilled in precious metal deposits will also be skilled in exploraiton for other commodities including copper, lead, zinc, nickel, and even diamonds and gwem stones. It almost always comes down to the basics of structure, lithology, and alteration.
An exploration geologist would focus on economic geology or mineral deposits, depending on which university s/he goes to. In addition to the basics of chemistry, physics, math, petrology, paleontology, and mineralogy, an exploration geologist must be skilled in structure, geophysics, geochemistry, ore deposit models, and communications. It also helps if you are in good physical condition, as most exploration geologists make their living in the field and not in the office!
An excellent career choice, but it is subject to cyclical demand as precious metal values go up and down. Unfortunately we are in a downturn right now, I hope it improves in the next few years.
