Question: Can i work at homedepot if i am a retired sheet metal worker with out loseing my penison?
Answer: It would be avisible not to work full-time. You'll only be elligible to work for a certain amount of hours (usually under 30 hours). If you go over you'll be possibly penalized and have to pay it back.
Question: Looking to get into a career involving sheet metal? Took metals at school, i enjoyed working with sheet metal, I've heard of people making a living off it. Where can i find information in regards to becoming a sheet metal worker?
Answer: You just have to find the right factory to do what you want to do. Or you can open a welding shop in your house for extra work (well in the garage would be better).
Question: i am a sheet metal worker from Liverpool England looking to live in Australia? what are the best parts of brisbane to live ie schools and sports i have three boys and baby girl the boys are keen sportsman my middle boy tom plays football for the district ,ive got over 20 years in sheet metal work is there much work in brisbane for me and have i got a good chance of getting in if any body nows of a firm who looking for a good tradesman please could you could tell me of any thankyou
Answer: I should think your chances are pretty good. The referenced booklet includes (in part 3) a self-assessment points test telling you how many points your family would receive based on your skills, ages, health, language skills, etc. At the moment I think you need 120 points to be considered for immigration.
There is LOADS of work for just about all trades in Queensland. You'll find work in Brisbane, but the mines in rural Queensland are booming so I'd be confident that you'd get a lot more money there. You may even find a mine that would be willing to let you live in Brisbane and pay for you to fly to the mine to work "4 days on, 4 days off" or something like that. And they'd pay you handsomely.
In Brisbane, I'd go to www.yellowpages.com.au. I just did a search for "sheet metal" and "greater brisbane qld" and it came up with hundreds of entries. I wouldn't be surprised if nearly every company has vacancies, our skills shortage is so bad, so perhaps try emailing some of the larger firms.
In Brisbane, I love the western suburbs around Indooroopilly-Kenmore. I live in Kenmore, but I'm not "from" this area - I freely chose to come and live here because of its benefits. There are many good public (free, government schools - I think different language to the UK!) primary and secondary schools, and also a range of private (fee-paying) schools. There are excellent parks and sports facilities, good shopping centres, low crime, and access to other parts of the city is excellent via the Western Freeway. I think you'd be hard-put to find a better area to raise children. And there are lots of manufacturers in the industrial area a little further south down the freeway, particularly around Sumner and Richlands.
To get to know Brisbane, maps.google.com.au has excellent zoomable maps and you can also overlay satellite images to see the industrial and residential areas etc. www.whereis.com is also good and allows you to display where all the schools, parks, sporting facilities etc are.
Best wishes to you!

Question: sheet metal workers in the outback?
Answer: They like aussie food too :P
Question: ive recently joined the sheet metal workers union, what are the benefits of having a union job? i was doing hvac for 1 company for a while,my buddy said he could get me into his union, local 38 sheetmetal workers unioun here in new york,so i left my other job to join, and right away i started at 3 dollars an hour more, other than that, what are th benefits of being in a union, how come some people r against unions?
Answer: Considering the Anti-Union sentiment I've seen on Answers, you're really brave posting this question!
My perspective is with short-term contract work. This current job is going to run a year, which is the longest hubby has had in 7 years! Normally, we end up with about 7-10 W2s in a year.
Benefits to being in a Craft Union:
-You can switch companies without loosing your pension and health care (if yours is like the IBB where the union holds & administers the plans and the companies just pay in during the term of employment)
-Continued training. I've lost track of how many certifications and hours of training the IBB does every year.
-Pay scale. As you've noticed, Union jobs pay more.
-Representation. If there's a problem, you're not alone in facing the big company. You have the right to have the Steward (Union Rep) with you during major discussions with company people.
-Safety Standards. Unions are usually very strict about OSHA standards for both workers & the company.
Talk to your Steward or the Hall, they can give you more information than the people on Answers.
From what I've noticed, a lot of the Anti-Union people are ignorant of the difference between Industry Unions (Teachers, Airline Pilots, etc) and Craft Unions (Boilermakers, Pipefitters, Ironworkers, etc). Full Referral Unions are a foreign concept to most people. Or, they think unions are irrelevant, antiquated relics of the past.
Question: retirement income, international sheet metal workers union..help? Ok, here is the deal. Husband took early retirement. age 59 from union sheet metal workers federal retirement plan.. they came up with this early retirement idea.. and now 4 years later.. say OH wait the retirement fund is not what it should be.. so we will no longer give cost of living increases to all those who took early retirement! People who retired before 2003 are not affected by the cuts.. now does this seem right? These guys worked 35 to 40 years in the trade.. expected , counted on cost of living.. can they just take it away?? Is there legal action that can be taken,, if so who would you talk to about this??
Answer: solicitar and the manager
Question: Sheet metal workers and Welders!! What is the difference?
Answer: Sheet metal workers primarily work with the forming of thin gauge sheet metal while welders join various metals using various techniques involving heat.
Question: Where can I get trained in custom metal fabrication and welding? I want to get metalworking and welding certifications so I can chop cars and fabricate parts. I know a lot of people will suggest tech schools like UTI or Wyotech, but I really feel like that won't get me the high level skills I want to work to achieve. I am considering the sheet metal workers union training facility here in Chicago, but I'm not really sure thats the right direction either. I'd like to stay local, but I'll take any suggestions of course.
Answer: See if you can get into the Sheet Metal Union. There is a growing shortage of manufacturing trades workers in this country. Every High School pushes kids toward college. In a trade you work while you learn. I went to school one night a week on a semester basis just like high school.
The sheet metal workers at our shop are very good at metal working. From HVAC ducting to making tool lockers, they do it all. This includes welding.
I attended a Tech College. Then I got a job at a machine shop due to my attendance at said Tech College. I started my apprenticeship along with 36 other guys. Four years later, 12 of us graduated. I have been a Journeyman Machinist for 20 years this past May. I too live in the Chicagoland area. Get into the apprenticeship, work hard and smart. Don't take any lip from the Journeyman. Some relish the idea that an apprentice is their personal slave and whipping boy. THEIR job is to make YOU better than they are. Period. Don't get a job where perform the same type of work over and over. To this day I am mediocre on a metal lathe due to my lack of training and time on a lathe. Tell them you want to learn and experience EVERYTHING when it comes to sheet metal work. Do not be afraid to move to a different company that will continue to train you. I changed jobs after I made sure they would continue my apprenticeship. I vastly improved my machining skills at second job.
I will out earn a family member working as a white collar professional by over $30K this year.
And when I competed my education, I had no school debt and had worked and earned wages for four year.
I work in heavy industry.
Best of Luck
Max
