Answer: A drivers license is not required by law, but he will need to trained and have a license/certified (required by insurance not law) for the equipment he will be using. But many employers will require a DL or CDL for employment. have him contact a heavy equipment dealer for whats common in your area. CDL is for Commercial trucks operated on public roads. since bulldozers and the like are not operated on public roads, no DL is required by law.

Question: I have a friend who wants to be a heavy-equipment operator. Any advice on how to do this? He lives in Canada and has no experience in heavy equipment operating. I know he need to get a CDL if he is to work in NY, but not sure about the Canada laws. he doesn't have thousands to spend on going to a school first, besides I've heard that most operators find them a joke and they advise to learn on the job. Does anyone know of any resources where he can find companies that will train him on the job? I really don't know anything about the field at all, but really want to help him out. He wants to make a career out of it, not just a part time job, what would be the best way for him to start?
Answer: Your friend does not need a CDL unless it his intention to move the equipment from one location to another. Most companies have people, other than their operators to move equipment.
He needs training. If he does not have the funds to go to for training, he may want to consider getting an entry job for a company that will train him. I would look at smaller companies. Most of these companies would start him on a front end loader to get his hand-eye coordination where it needs to be.
If her were living in the States and a citizen he could be eligible for training grant, but have no knowledge about Canada.
Question: what is the easiest way to certified as a heavy equipment operator? I have experience with several different pieces of heavy equipment, just want to become certified.
Answer: I guess you are too serious to want to hear anything like "Keep eating till you break the 300 pound barrier" as a way to be a heavy equipment operator.
If not then go with the previous answerer who has the serious reply.
