Question: In this modern economy, are there no longer ditch diggers anymore? What's the worst jobs in construction now? I know it's a labourer, but what specifically are the worst jobs in construction like ditch diggers were a hundred years ago. I imagine most heavy machinery has replaced ditch diggers.
Answer: With underground utilities, much of digging needs to be done by hand. These workers are amongst the hardest workers. In my opinion, the most dangerous jobs are working for companies that don't follow safety practices and handling hazardous materials (asbestos for example) by cutting corners.
Question: Can someone recommend some good safety work boots (to be used as part of the PPE in construction work)? Boots that last a good few months and that are comfortable (I do not want any blisters or calluses in my feet). I know there might be some boots like that but those will cost more than the 30 quid I have in my budget for the boots. Please, any suggestions are welcome. And also, please let me know where in London I can buy them. I am starting a a construction labourer job next Monday and I need to get my PPE. I live in East London but you can suggest any place even if it is in West London, I am planing on going either tomorrow or Sunday. Thanks.
Answer: Try a pair of SCRUFFS
No vat to pay on work wear
Or try Dickies ? at your local MACHINE MART ?
Please note.... most building sites DO NOT ACCEPT RIGGER boots on site due to H+S regs
Most employers make the employee buy there own boots so they know they fit, and are what they want to wear, and give them an allowance and upon a reciept they refund this ..
Ok you may need a size 8 but 24.99 hurt your feet, where as the 29.99 ones dont or you may one to buy ones for 49.99 + but your going to have to pay the extra
Employers waste a lot of money on PPE and footware is a nescity ... why waste money and work down time when the employee can do this himself and get there own PPE and they will not complain and know they fit
NO BOOTS ..... NO JOB....
Easy as that
Be safe ....
Question: Is Public liability insurance legally required for self employed people in the construction industry? I work as a self employed labourer with bricklayers for asub contractor , am I legally required to take out public liability insurance
Answer: if you employ others and are responsible for the contracts then yes if you subcontract then the person who you " work for as such" is responsible for the liability insurance, hope this helps x
Question: Do you need a cscs card to be a labourer on a building site? I have no experience in the construction industry
Answer: Hi. All of the above answers are right to a degree. You do need a CSCS card to work on any site belonging to a company who is joined the MAJOR CONTRACTORS GROUP. Which is most big construction company's. On smaller ones you do not need one , but you would have a much better chance of getting a job. If you work for an Agency they are required by law to pay for your course.

Question: self employed construction worker help needed? can anyone tell me how to obtain a cscs card, and who to contact. my hubby as been in construction 20yrs and neva needed one now hes come out of work and needs this card to get another job as a labourer, your help would be appreciated.
my hubby already has cis card he needs cscs construction saftey card
Answer: my ex got one of these fairly recently.
to get the basic level one, you have to complete a short and very easy multiple choice health and safety test (much like the driving theory test). You can get a book of questions from the CSCS site or off ebay, then book the test via the CSCS site - they hold them in most towns on certain days. You also have to get your employer to sign a form saying you've been working in the industry for a certain number of years. If he can't get an employer to sign this it gets a bit more complicated and he may need to get an NVQ in his trade
have a look at these websites: http://www.cscs.uk.com/RunScript.asp?p=A…

Question: Is there anyone out there in Australia who can REALLY help us gain employment in the natural resources sector. We all hear how the natural resources sector in this country is booming, and almost everyone is leaving to work in Roxby Downs or Pilbara for instance but with no particular trade or licences at the moment, my friend is finding it really hard to find employment in any mining towns. However he has heaps of experience as a labourer in the building and construction industries. He also has a long working history in production and also hospitality ie bar, cleaning etc. Nick is willing to do anything. and simply just wants to get into these towns/areas to work and EARN THE BIG BUCKS!! Thanks everyone who helps us out here.
Answer: lots of newspapers are on-line now
try this one

Question: whos more suitable for full time employment on a building site? an alcoholic ex milkman and chip shop fryer, and an ex barman both aged over 45 with no previous building site experience and me aged 36 with 20 years experience on building sites, construction skills registered as a skilled labourer. now out of those 3 two are full timers and the other is a temp. can you guess which ones, and which would you hire and why?
Answer: i suppose its a case of who you know nod nod wink wink.
unfair i know but the building trade is rife with it.
the alcoholic would have no chance if i were doing the interviews (health and safety issues)
Question: job descriptions in construction industry? ok i'm doing h/w and i need to do an A3 sized poster on job roles in the construction industry with description on each job.

Answer: Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and natural built environment, including works such as bridges, roads, canals, dams and buildings. Civil engineering is the oldest engineering discipline after military engineering,[4] and it was defined to distinguish it from military engineering.
Construction engineering involves planning and execution of the designs from transportation, site development, hydraulic, environmental, structural and geotechnical engineers. As construction firms tend to have higher business risk than other types of civil engineering firms, many construction engineers tend to take on a role that is more business-like in nature: drafting and reviewing contracts, evaluating logistical operations, and closely-monitoring prices of necessary supplies.
And Surveying is the process by which a surveyor measures certain dimensions that generally occur on the surface of the Earth. Modern surveying equipment, such as electronic distance measurement (EDM), total stations, GPS surveying and laser scanning, allow for accurate measurement of angular deviation, horizontal, vertical and slope distances. This information is crucial to convert the data into a graphical representation of the Earth's surface, in the form of a map. This information is then used by civil engineers, contractors and even realtors to design from, build on, and trade, respectively. Elements of a building or structure must be correctly sized and positioned in relation to each other and to site boundaries and adjacent structures. Civil engineers are trained in the basics of surveying.
