Question: How can I present the career of a research scientist? For my grade 10 careers class we had to research a career, and I got research scientist. So I haveall the information but I need a creative way to present it all. Does anyone have any ideas?
First I thought of doing a model? But what could I do a model of?
I just need some creative way to present this career and I am open to any serious suggestions, thanks.
Answer: There are a few ways that I can think of to present the life of a research scientist.
1. You could do a research paper and list off their backround information as well as what they have done, and how it effects us today.
2. Another way is to do it in a time line, start with the year they were born and go from there with all major events in their life and have a little peice of writting to describe why it was important.
3. Or you could do a poster board. These are the easiest to read as the information is all right in front of you. When doing this you could also add some colour, nothing too bright like Neon Pink, but don't use black and white for the entire way through.
Well, these are just some ideas taht I had had. Hope one of them helps.
Question: What is the point of an MD/Ph.D program to become a research scientist? If you want to be a research scientist can't you just get a Ph.D without the MD and be qualified enough? What exactly is the advantage of the MD/Ph.D? How exactly do you become qualified to be a research scientist at a top institution? Say if I wanted to go into genetic engineering in the future and be at a top institution what type of route should I take?
Answer: A PhD will suffice for most researchers. An MD/PhD program is for particularly driven individuals, since it is a 10 year program. It allows you to do lab research as well as interact with patients. PhD researchers do not have a medical background, so they cannot do anything directly with patients. And MDs are trained to diagnose and treat conditions, but may not have the background to do much research. A PhD/MD can do everything.
If you want to do genetic engineering, all you need is a PhD in Genetics (or molecular biology). You can still potentially do research with humans, you just won't be able to interact with them as a doctor.
Question: Can someone help me research a scientist who contributed to the plate tectonics theory or is involved in volca Can someone help me research a scientist who contributed to the plate tectonics theory or is involved in volcanoes. I also need help writing a story about them on the day they announced their discovery or on their job.
Answer: Strictly speaking, Wegener wasn't involved in plate tectonics. Wegener proposed the theory of continental drift, which is different scientifically from plate tectonics. Mason and Hess are the two men who are generally credited with first proposing plate tectonics (which has now become the standard model for explaining how and why the continents move around on surface of the mantle). The wiki entry on plate tectonics is pretty decent, and has some more details on Mason and Hess, and the background on how they came up with the theory of plate tectonics.
If your teacher has a grain of geological training, she will flunk you if you credit Wegener with coming up with plate tectonics. I know I would. YMMV.
Question: If you were a nefarious research scientist, what's a good way to secretly skew the data? Say you don't like the results of a research survey... what are some creative ways that you could skew or alter the results to be the way you WANT them to be, but that still look official and legitimate if your research is ever investigated.
And no, I'm not a research scientist, but I'm writing a story and want to include this idea of deliberately mangled research data.
thanks.
Answer: There are examples of this. There was a guy at Bell Labs who was using noise from old data and calling it new data. Someone noticed.
Read about John H Schön in Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Hendrik_Sch%C3%B6n
The techniques he used are not well described in Wiki, but if you hunt around the web, you might find something.
The real problem with falsifying data is people won't be able to duplicate the work so they will start looking hard at the publications to see what is going on and will eventually find problems with them or conclude the initial results are incorrect somehow. If people aren't having problems while trying to duplicate and build on the work, then the work is irrelevant anyway.
This guy had his doctorate revoked by his Uni and can't apply for grants from the German equivalent of the US National Science Foundation.
The reason falsifying data is such a big deal in science is because people will waste resources and time trying to build on the results. This is unconscionable in chronically underfunded fields. From the wiki article
"Also before the allegations became public, several research groups tried - without success - to reproduce most of the groundbreaking results in the field of the physics of organic molecular materials."
Question: It is the proper role of a psychological research scientist to? question data
make safe predictions
keep research methods accissible only to those involved in research.
avoid making predictions.
Answer: i think you may be correct
Question: What are the skills needed to become a research scientist? What do you think?
Answer: You should never think anything impossible, you should be 99% positive.
You should refer others but believe yourself.
You should possess good observation capability and vision so that you will think that nobody has thought.
You should possess a strong desire and ability to study.
Question: Are there any research scientist that believe in God? I wonder this, because anytime you mention God on anything, they seem to discredit you....
Especially Genealogist
If science is based on Atheism, I don't see how anyone would want to be a research scientist. It seems to be very discriminatory towards people that believe in God...
So does that mean that if you are a believer of God you should not pursue scientific research, because even if you are successful you may still be discredited for your work simply because of your religion. Why not discredit the work of an Atheist?
Answer: This is such an elementary question. First of all, science deals and studies only the physical properties of the earth and universe, such as atoms or how fast a speeding bullet moves and how life came about PHYSICALLY through natural chemical reactions, not on the mental states of things or religions. Religion is a whole other topic and has nothing to do with science. To try to bring the two together or state that one denies the other is something only a child would think of... AND of course there are scientists out there that are very religious.
Question: what are the hours of work for a medical research scientist? how many hours do you work each day? is it 9am-5pm or longer or shorter hours?
Answer: well i cannot speak for everyone in this field but it is well accepted in research their is no real 9-5. It is a job that is very dependent on the studies you are carrying out, experiments, deadlines, etc... some duties might require constant attention, and some may be very tedious to complete.
I would say i work on average 45-55 hours a week. But i know of some people who can get away with 30-35, and others who work upwards of 80-100hrs/wk. It definitly varies. I am in academia right now, hopefully i can get a job in industry where hours are more regular. Industry jobs, depending on your title, may be more of a 9-5. But i must stress again it greatly depends on what area of research you are involved in and the stressors which dictate your productivity.
Question: How can I become a Research Scientist? What fields do I have to take to meet and exceed requirements?
Answer: Well, you need first to reseach the thing, and therby lies the tale THAT is your first reseach project.
So, and you will find this in your research, that it depends on what exactly you are researching.
If you are into drugs then you will possibly need chemistry, which is no good if you are researching say dog behavioral problems.
Therefore enthusiasm for your aforesaid research.
Question: Is microbiology hopeful in USA ? Iwant to be a research scientist, can I do it after my Bsc in microbiology ? Can I study in USA after my Bsc in microbiology ? Any scholorship for that ?
Answer: Non traditional course and huge demand for qualified peoples, mainly in the research fields.
Yes, you may pursue MS in Microbiology followed by PhD in USA, provided your present course of B.Sc is a 4 years Degree course from a recognized University/College. Scholarships/Aids are available but strictly on merit basis; your scores in TOEFL & GRE.

Question: A research scientist wants to study a certain attribute? A research scientist wants to study a certain attribute of
dogs. It is estimated that approximately 5 percent of all
dogs have this attribute. If the scientist wants to study a
sample of N dogs having the attribute, approximately
how many dogs should be screened in order to obtain the
desired sample size?
(A) N/5
(B) 5N
(C) 2ON
(D) 105N.
(E) 120N
Answer: C
Here's how to do it:
5% = 0.05 = 1/20
So, out of every 20 dogs, 1 has it.
Thus, if you want N dogs with this attribute, you need 20N dogs. To get this, I just multiplied the fraction above by 1 = N/N:
1/20 * N/N = N/20N
See? I get N dogs with the attribute from a population of 20N dogs.
Question: How can I research a scientist studied duck? R10S and 327A are the tags marked on the geese.
How can I research where they came from?
Answer: Check with the wildlife game people in your area. They can point you to the researchers.
Question: is all a medical scientist does research? i'm considering become a medical scientist but i was just wondering, do they only do research all day?
Answer: Depends on their training. IF they also have a MD or DO degree than they can see patients as well.
Question: If you were a research scientist in biology, would you want a 'christain evolutionist' as a colleague? Not me; how could I trust the integrity of their work?
They are really deists about 99.9% percent of the time, yet they still claim to be christain. I think they would miss some crucial findings with this kind of lack of integrity and scientific ethics....
...not to mention their unscientific inability to acknowledge their possible 'wrongness'.
...You mean Pasteur the deist? I wouldn't have a problem with him, no.
I have yet to hear anybody list one scientist who is a true christain. All are deists, at most...
...self profession is meaningless. It is a good thing Collins had his 'epiphany' after the genome project.
...to take the bible allegorically in all cases is to no longer be a christain.
Spazzy, you may allow religion to keep reshuffling their hand - I do not. Because the Catholic Poope says that something is not in conflict with dogma does not make it so.
...it only means that he can 'make it so'.
Answer: No, I would have no preference. I was a Christian for a lot of my life and I had the good sense to keep it separate from my day to day life. There are many examples of prominent Christian scientists. To my knowledge sane Christians (some would argue grouping those two words) believe God started the universe, let man evolve, and then started intervening around 6000 years ago. Jesus is still their messiah so they are Christians and they believe God has intervened in this universe thus they are not deists.
A young Earth creationist is a different matter I'm afraid. I would probably grill them on their understanding of how the universe works and if they are a complete lost cause I might try and get one of us transferred for both our sakes.
*edit*
Ken Miller, he is a Catholic that not only supports evolution he is also an ardent opponent to the creationism movement. Here is a long video of him:

"allegorically in all cases is to no longer be a christian." That is your narrow definition of Christianity. The Catholic church openly supports evolution for Christ's sake!
Question: What famous scientist should I do a research biography over? There are so many famous scientist...but I have no idea who to do my research biography over. What do you guys recommend and what was was he famous for discovering?
Answer: How about Ibn al-Haytham? He was an eleventh-century Muslim scholar who overcame bouts of mental illness to develop the scientific method.
Born in Basra (located in what is now Iraq) in 965, Ibn al-Haytham first studied theology, trying unsuccessfully to resolve the differences between the Shi'ah and Sunnah sects. He turned his attention to the works of the ancient Greeks, including Aristotle, Euclid, and Archimedes. He was the first person to apply algebra to geometry, founding the branch of mathematics known as analytic geometry.
He traveled to Egypt to build a dam on the Nile, failed, and ended up imprisoned in Cairo for ten years. During this time he developed the idea of systematically testing hypotheses with experiments—the core of the scientific method. He wrote more than 200 books and treatises in his lifetime.
A good biography is "Ibn al-Haytham: First Scientist" by Bradley Steffens. You can find reviews of the book and a sample chapter at http://www.ibnalhaytham.net/
Question: how can i get a research scientist or a group of reseach scientist? that i will be able to communicate with
Answer: Connections with a university are the best place, but are difficult without valid qualifications (post secondary student in a relevant area, researcher in similar field, collaborative effort, etc). Certain community societies will have scientists volunteering and eager to share knowledge (mycology/mushroom societies, environmental enhancement, astronomy club, choose the research area you are interested and get involved, and you'll likely meet a few researchers on a more casual basis).
