Question: How corrupted do you think the average radio station program director is?
Answer: Completely- it's a job requirement.
Question: Radio Promotions Director? What's it like to be a promotions director for a radio station? What are your duties and responsibilities? Is it a very difficult job? Would someone be able to handle school (college undergrad level) part-time (2 classes) and do this job at the same time?
Answer: It Depends on the size of the market, the number of stations you're overseeing and the level of involvement the Promotions Director is expected to take.
I work as promotions director for 5 radio stations and in the fall and winter it's not so hectic, but the summer is non-stop.
I think that if you are taking 2 classes you may be okay- but don't expect too many weekends off during the summer. Most promotions Directors are expected to be at all promotional events. Remote Broadcasts, Appearances, concerts, even the small ones. Of course, again, it depends on how many stations you're with and how involved the stations expect you to be.
You've got to be very organized with paperwork and very on top of everything. The good thing about the job is it keeps you on your toes... the bad thing is- it keeps you on your toes. No 2 situations are ever the same... Even the same events from year to year will change.
It's better to see Promotions Director as a career rather than just a job, because it's something that you get better at year after year instead of day to day.
There are days I like the job and days where I hate it. It's a struggle because I can only do so much- I can't tell people where they need to be because I'm nobody's boss. If someone doesn't show up for an event- I look bad- whether it was my fault they didn't show or not.
You've got to be able to deal with the public, with officials and be able to apologize gracefully. You've also got to know how to keep your cool in any situation because you are representing the station(s).
You've also got to know how to work with the Programming Directors of the stations- That's the closest relationship you'll have. If you don't get along with them, you don't get anything done.
It's not a job to take lightly- there is a lot of responsibility that comes with the title. The big frustration is- Lots of Responsibility, Little authority.
I could get a lot more done if I could TELL people what they were doing instead of asking pretty please if they would do this.
At least that's the case where I work. The people here are lazy and no one volunteers for anything and they are not afraid to NOT do something.
It IS good experience for future jobs- but I wouldn't recommend taking the job as you would a retail position at a department store you know?
Question: What are some popular radio stations in Tacoma Washington? I'm looking to move to washington. I'm looking for a job as a radio promotions director (the job I do in my current location) I need to know what some of the popular stations are there!
Answer: Tacoma is part of the Seattle-Tacoma Washington market, the #14 largest broadcasting market in the country.
To find out which stations are most popular, you will want to familiarize yourself with the ratings services of Arbitron.
To find out about trends in radio broadcasting, familiarize yourself with Radio & Records (Online at radioandrecords. com)
At radioandrecords, type in "Seattle" under market name. You will get a list of the most popular stations, and just as important for looking for a job, which company owns them.
You may find that individual stations may have a promotions director, or there may be one position for all of one company's stations in that city.
Do some research on the following companies: CBS Radio, Entercom, Clear Channel. You may decide to work for one of them, or for another company, but if you don't understand what those companies are, then you will not get started in the business.
I know nothing of you or your current job, so that is all either helpful or WAY too basic. Good luck to you!
