Question: What video editor can I use to do simple operations? Please recommend a video editing software that allows for easy operations, like splitting a video in parts, merging 2 or more parts in one, etc. Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas are the ones I have already, but the fact is that I can't open the sound on many video formats. Please share your thoughts on the best and the most easy to use video editor. Oh, and leave windows movie maker out of this, because it takes decades to open a video file. My computer is not very good.

Question: Can an editor change the title of my story without my knowledge and permission? Is he liable for injunction? I had sent a short story to an Editor for publication. He published it but changed the title of the story without my knowledge and permission. Is he entitled to do so? If not, what would be my remedies?

Answer: That depends entirely on the contract you signed. Usually - yes they can. They can edit the story and change a title as they see fit without your permission. The same goes with a book once you sell it to a publisher. Review your contract and see what the clause regarding editing says. If there was no contract, check the submission guidelines and rules for submission. It will say so in there. If you wish, you can contact an attorney who specializes in literary matters, but if it is just a short story, I doubt any lawyer would take your case unless it is a very major publication and they specifically broke a contract. Otherwise they would probably advise you it isn't worth the legal fees. In that case, if they broke the contract and it is a small publication, they might publish a retraction. Question: How does one go about finding an editor? I am a young author and I currently trying to write a novel. I have no editor and would like someone to explain to me whether or not I have to have published work to have an editor and if I have to have a publisher to have an editor. And do editors only look at the finished copy of the book, or do they add input as it is written? Is it even necessary to have an editor? Answer: An agent will help you find an editor, so find one of those first. Writers Market or PublishersMarketplace.com are great sources for addresses, tips, and examples. If you're interested in polishing it up before you submit it to agents, then check out writing workshops or freelance editors.

Question: How much should a good editor charge to edit 100 unspaced pages? What's a fair rate to charge? I'm an amazing editor but I'm just starting out. Any help is most appreciated. Thanks I'm sorry, that was confusing. I am an editor and I don't know quite what to charge simply because I've never done work outside of grad school yet.

Answer: Just starting out, I'd say first make your writers submit in 12 point double-spaced Times New Roman at least 1 inch margins all around. You can't edit anything if you don't have room to write down your corrections. This will mean you will have probably over 200 pages to edit. I would not charge less than $150 for doing this. When you get better and more word of mouth you can charge by the word count. Blessings!

Answer: You're taking the right step in changing your major. Is it possible to get some experience by working on your school's paper? If you can work into an editing job there, you'll have a solid basis to begin with. Any journalism experience you can acquire will help.

Question: How do you become a continuity editor? I'm really interested in this aspect of filmmaking. People don't like to watch movies with me because I'm a little vocal about inconsistencies in movies. And, I don't just mean that in one shot the beer is open, the next its closed and the next its open. Answer: As a SCRIPT SUPERVISOR (the crew member responsible for catching continuity problems during shooting), you would not have anything to do with the costumes, period, characters, or speech UNLESS they were not the same for all shots within a scene. For example, if a coat was buttoned one moment and opened the next, without there being a scripted reason or believable gap in story time for the change. The style of the coat would not be your concern. FIRST, go to film school. THEN it's all about knowing the right people.

Question: How to insert an online design editor in your website? I work for a print shop and we have many templates and designs. I am trying to make a page where the customer can upload files, pick font and text, etc. They can use the templates provided or use their own idea. This is for business cards, banners, and menus among other products. Is this only done with code or are their programs to insert this editor in my site.

Answer: I also work for a printing business in Sydney and found many suppliers of web to print software that is capable of doing this. I'm not aware of any other 'off the shelf' software that you can buy cheaply to do it yourself however. If you type in 'web to print' software in Google you should come up with quite a few that are out there. Remember, it pays not to have to reinvent the wheel. Plus, you also want customers to not only edit their own cards but to also implement a shppping cart software as well as a customer portal for them to log in at anytime and check their orders or to even reorder.

Answer: Look in your home directory for a profile definition -- if you use bash, it's typically ~/.bash_profile, or depending on your shell, .profile. Add your environment variables there, and either source in the new file (. .bash_profile, for example) or log off and log back on. If you do env | grep CSCOPE your setting should be there.

Question: What are some tips for an Advertiser Editor in convincing local business to advertise in a college newspaper? I've currently been hired as an advertiser editor for my college's school paper. We're currently seeking businesses to advertise in our paper. What are some useful hints or tips for going about doing this? I'm relatively new to advertising but I'm excellent (or at least I think I am) salesperson. Answer: I would start right on campus with your college store. Not only the store itself but look at the products carried. Suggest to the store the same position each issue (ie back cover) Also look to corporations that hire in your field of study - Parker, GE, Boeing, etc.. and alumni who want to promote their businesses as well as support the school via the paper. Although there are fine lines between editorial and advertising - offering an interview my not be a bad idea. If you have Pepsi on campus go to the local distributor, same for Coke or Frito Lay. No need to hunt down a top exec at the national level. Check the vending machine for a label and contact number... Call other schools and ask for a copy of their paper - see who's advertising - go from there. Unlike others that have replied, I would not go into a meeting with an ad already mocked up. Ideas and suggestions are one thing - but once they look at an actual ad, it will get stuck in their head - tough thing to undo if it's not the message they want to convey. Live by numbers die by numbers - if I run the local pizza shop I already know how many students do or don't eat my pizza. Once you discount its a tough road to increase esp in hard economical times. Answer: I'm sure a degree in any of the English/writing related fields is a huge plus for getting a job or internship. I cant' speak from personal experience, but I would imagine that it is especially difficult to obtain a prestigious publishing and/or editing job. My suggestion would be to email or post questions on editor and/or publisher blogs. For the most part most of the publishing world (i.e. agents, editors and publishers) conduct their business in New York City. There are companies or branches of companies that have offices in places like Los Angeles and San Fransisco, but I believe that it is pretty safe to assume that you would have to be prepared to move to New York in order to have the largest range of potential options. Getting the job would just be the beginning. A huge part of the job is making contacts in the business. It would be very difficult to make contacts if you didn't reside in New York. These are just my thoughts though. I recommend researching and asking questions on various blogs to get a more detailed answer.
