Question: Difference between Computer Arts: New Media and Graphic Design at Academy of Art University? I'm planning on going to the Academy of Art University in SF, but I'm stuck between whether I should take Computer Arts: New Media or Graphic Design. Could someone please tell me the difference? Also, if I do take Computer Arts:New Media, what type of career opportunities are there? I know obviously if I take Graphic Design, I become a Graphic Designer, am I right? Please help!
Answer: Hello! I'm a student at AAU and here's about as much as I know:
New Media is part of the Computer Arts school, so you're going to learn more about web design and web graphics. You'll probably learn programs like Photoshop, Flash, After Effects Fireworks, Dreamweaver, etc. and probably some basic HTML, CSS, etc.
Graphic Design is more traditional arts based, where you'll learn the principals of design and stuff like typology, calligraphy, print and package design.
You can always change your major if you end up liking one more than the other. You can probably even float between the two and still be a graphic designer, but learn the tools of the new media trade.

The School of Graphic Design is a comprehensive study of print and web design. If you know that this is what you want to do, then this is the way to go.

Good Luck!!
Question: what can i do with a media/arts animation degree? i have a silly degree in media arts/animation - i don't like intensive 3D computer work that much it turns out - the commitment it demands is just fanatic, and i'm a musician mainly
what sort of masters program should i take with this?
or what even CAN i take ? ? ! ?
Answer: There is nothing "silly" about an education/degree in the arts, including media arts/animation. There are many different areas where your training in design could be applied. If you have a flair for business, you could use your design talents as a graphic artist or designer. What about a career in illustration?
If you have not already done so, why don't you check out the Wetcanvas site/community. There are many artists forums where you can gain a wealth of information.

Question: is it worth getting a degree in media arts and animation at the Art Institute for a hundred thousand dollars? Would my carreer be rewarding enough in the long run?
Is it worth spending all that money?
What are better schools in southern california or elsewhere that could possibly be a better choice?
Answer: you would be waisting your money if you went to an art institute! I went and finished with one of the best demo reels that quarter and it was a mediocre demo reel compared to what you need to get a job in entertainment industry. I wish I had know about other options before going. While how much you get out of it dose depend on how hard you try you have to try extra hard when you go to an art institute because they are usually ill equipped to teach you what you need to learn; this varies from crappy teachers to crappy equipment. They are a company and are more concerned with money. Some companies wont even higher you if Art Institute is on your résumé that's the general real world reputation of Ai grads. Any where you go for animation is going to cost you though... the good places will cost more but they will pay off in the long run and usually have teachers with real experience and all the equipment you would need. Look for a school that has a green screen room, motion capture, teaches a 3d sculpting program(z-brush, muddbox),uses xsi maya or 3d studio max for their 3d, uses Houdini or some other program for compositing not just aftereffects. And make sure a demo reel is a part of graduating, if it's not they don't know what they are doing. Also beware if they don't show student work..a place I wish I had known about first is the Dave School in Florida its in universal studios don't know how much it cost though, CAL ARTS, SCAD and Vancouver film school(VFS) have really good reps too...you should also check out http://www.cgsociety.org/ you can get a lot of info there. I hope this helps, these are all things I wish I had considered and if you work hard you'll be able to get a job you love that will pay you enough to where you can eat have fun and pay off your loans with extra left over for your principal. Good luck on your search...
Question: What are the best animation/media arts colleges in the United States? I want to go into animation, 3D design, and work for Pixar, Dreamworks, etc. I was thinking about going to Savannah College of Art and Design or Pratt University, but I was wondering if those colleges are good preparations for my career, and if there are any other possibilities that I may be missing. Not to mention if there's any schools in the state of Texas that may prove to be useful.
Answer: There are the art institutes..
Question: How do I find find a university in london that I can get a Bachelor of Science Media Arts and Animation? specificly want to become a games concept artist, designer and writer but have a good understanding of graphics. I cant seem to find a university or college over the net that will allow me to learn, give financial support and career information and development. I have to either go to america or pay stupid amounts of money of which both are not an option. What else would benefit my success in the industry 'cause I also want to learn Japanese as this culture of gaming is where my passion lies and hope to one day maybe work for companies like Square Enix, Konami or Capcom. In short where do I begin, what do I pay, what help can I get during and after ( financially, accademically and personally )and how long will it take? Any further information would be appreciated. thank you!
Answer: Media Arts and animation differ slightly different, where Media Arts leans more to Mass Communication, whereas Animation students are based specifically in the film and games industry.
Look up the artists that are currently working for Konami etc, and find out which schools they went to. Two extremely good schools that give animation courses are Central St. Martin's, and Royal College of Art. An Animation course in your selected university would be a better bet for you to be a Concept Artist (CA), rather than in Media Arts (personal opinion).
But if you truly want to be in the centre of gaming culture in Japan; you should look up scholarships or internships that allow you to fly to Japan. Most foreigners that go to study in Japan usually take a Japanese language course for a year - to pass the national exam, before taking a Bachelor's degree there.
After finishing with your course, it would be wise to talk to your professors, for they may have contacts in the industry that can help you with your career.
Hope this information helps. Good luck!
Question: what is a good idea for a media arts project about what it means to be a canadian? i need a good idea for a media arts project about what it means to be canadian..i have no ideas what to do..help???
