Question: How do I get a job as accounts receivable clerk? I don't have an accounting background. ?
I have a B.A. in Economics already. Some of my friends with the same degree landed the job already, but I just don't get it. People said the two subjects go hand in hand, but I don't see anything similar. I am taking Financial Accounting right now, and plan ti learn Quickbook soon. Hopefully, that will work out.
Answer: Go to school and get some accounting background
Question: Can you describe for me the daily tasks of an accounts receivable clerk? Everything from opening checks to ??? I need to know every detail. I just took a job with a company that does staffing for accounting. Allthough my background is in HR, my accounting knowledge is lacking. All the books I've read have just given me the basics. I need to know in detail what duties an accounts receivable clerk will need to preform on a daily basis.
Answer: getting hold of customers and asking them to settle their debts, you'll probably start in processing of sales orders and invoicing, which is simple accounting as you will just raise invoices from orders received and enter into the debtors individual accounts, your company will have to first of all show you their entire debtors system from input to output, you must remember that the accounts receivable department is one of the core departments of any business if sales are made on credit of course.
you must first find out about their system and where you fit into the system, they will allocate your responsibilities and tell you what they expect of you, but accounts receivable is pretty simple you'll get into it very easily, good luck
Question: What are the duties of an accounts payable and/or accounts receivable clerk????
crisstype: I have an idea but I want to know exactly what they do so I can put it on my resume. Accounts payable takes care of payments for the company and accounts receivable of payments coming in. Thanks for the smart as$ answer though, I can always count on getting one for every question I ask on Y!A!
I meant crissypeach, it gets cut off so yea..........
Answer: Beyond the basics, which are pretty obvious, they might include:
AP- negotiating terms with suppliers (to get discounts), filing credit applications, reconciling credit card statements to purchase orders, filing tax exempt certificates (if your company is tax emempt)
AR- collections calls, bank recs, processing wire transfers,
customer service issues if goods are returned for credit
All depends on the size of the company and how much overlap there is between departments.
Question: Can someone tell me what credit control duties will likely be as Accounts Receivable Clerk for large company? Just an overview for further research would be brilliant thanks
Answer: That would depend entirely on the Company. As a clerk you may have no dues regarding credit control but merely sti at a phone trying to collect monies or send out billings etc.
Question: What Makes an effective Accounts receivable clerk??? HI there,
I'm going to be doing a lot of collections calls and I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on making my collections calls more effective and positive. Thanks for the help:)
Answer: Tell them their credit rating will be affected by not paying their bill.
Question: What does an Account Receivable/Payable clerk do? What do they generally do? Do they actually ever have any physical possession of the money coming in or how do they know what is coming in and going out? Also, what software do they generally use?
Answer: AISHA and the SPAM..my my my!
Usually account receivable clerks will take payments that are received from the company and make deposits. They will pay any outstanding bills. So, usually money will be in possession.
There are several different types of software, Quick Books or Quicken, to name a few!
Good Luck!
Question: What does an Account Payable/Receivable clerk do? What exactly do they do? Is the work complicated or rather easy? What do you need to have knowledge of and what software do they use?
Answer: HI,
I have been an Accountant with my own business for over 20 years, so I can help you!
AR (Accounts Receivable) and AP (Accounts Payabel) are basically the same thing, just in reverse for the 2 companies involved.
An A/R clerk is the Receiver of incoming money on account. This person keeps records of who is paying their bills from your company, when they pay, and any pertinent info concerning these transactions. It might even involve making arrangements for the customer to pay his bills on time, if he's having trouble. Or it may involve reports to the credit bureau, or filing a small claims court suit to get your money. Many times a company will have credit collectors who do this.
An A/P clerk keeps records of outgoing money, or actually pays the bills. There are certain bills that are regular and close to being the same every month, such as phone, electricity, and water. But then a company may need to purchase material to make whatever they are selling. Usually a policy is set on doing this. One company I worked for had a "receive before the tenth, pay this month". After the tenth, payment was delayed until the next month. Of course, there may be problems with the orders that come in: they could be short, they could be damaged, they could be incorrect. So, in these cases, adjustments are necessary, which you will take care of (on the orders of the receiving dept). Payroll comes under A/P also, altho it is kept separate because of taxes.
So, I have covered much of what AR/AP clerks do in as concise a language as possible.
Question: why rotate accounts receivable clerks and accounts payable clerks, accounting? accounting procedures, so clerks don't skim clients' checks
Answer: It's called segregation of duties. The reasoning for this is so no one employee has total control of a specific duty. Use accounts receivable for example, as you mentioned. If only one employee handles the checks, he or she can manipulate the checks without anyone else knowing. By allowing several employees to handle the reception of checks, they will find errors in the account balances (debit does not equal credit; cash received does not equal the amount expected). If the company finds an error in the cash account, they will call the companies to see if they have paid, and they will more than likely say yes. This is when you know theft is occuring. Segregation of duties is known as preventative action. Generally, the best employees that work everyday and decline time off are more than likely committing fraud. That is why companies mandate that employees take time off.
Question: Accounting Clerk or Accounts Recievable Clerk? I just came out of college and received my diploma in Accounting. I'm also going to pursue a Degree in Accounting.
I'm looking for my first job in the field, and since I have very little experience I can only find jobs for an Accounting Clerk or an Accounts Receivable Clerk. Based on your knowledge or experience, which job do you think is more “hands on” meaning you do more variety of areas of accounting and soak up more knowledge? Which of the two pays better? Also, which of the two do you think is a better choice to take me further in my professional career? Because I eventually want to become a Certified General Accountant and get the senior accounting positions.
Thanks
A Certified General Accountant is a major designation here in Canada.
The three Accounting designations here are Certified General Accountant (CGA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and Chartered Accountant (CA)
Answer: An accounts receivable clerk MAINLY works in an A/R department posting payments and applying payments received from customers.
An accounting clerk may do accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, general ledger, payroll or any combination of the above.
Both are hands on positions in that you actually do accounting and bookkeeping.
As far as variety, this will depend on the company.
When you say you want to be a Certified General Accountant...exactly what do you mean? In the US, there is a CPA (Certified Professional Accountant) and a CMA (Certified Management Accountant).
Each of those designations or certifications require taking a test with multiple modules.
You do not need to be a CPA or a CMA to obtain a decent paying job or a job at the management level. However, the certifications do add credibility to your education.
